He stared at the dossiers on us, along with case files of other pending cases he'd be trying.

He turned his laptop off..

He sipped his coffee.

He now had the 411 on her... He knew her quite well.. A pretty decent Prosecutor..didn't lose much...

He seemed to remember a conversation he had had with her..

"Bill, a guy I sent up a few years ago....Brad Tucker called me a day ago...Do you remember him?" she asked.

"Yeah I remember him, a three time loser...A Heist guy...cracked safes...Home Invasion....I thought he was out...He up again? Damnnnnnn!" he had said, smiling...

while munching on a corn beef special...

"He testified in the Mabel Monaham Murder case...I was made aware of him during the last days of the Prosecutions trial.. remember how that Public defender protested his testimony being used so late in the game and Courtland shot him down?  He is now saying that he lied...That none of what he said was true.. He wasn't present at any meeting in any bar in which Tommy Strickland talked about having robbed that lady's house...It was all made up...Made up and fed to him by YOU in exchange for his release from prison." she had said.

She was having a Hot roast Beef sandwich that day.

"Elaine baby, how long you been in this game huh? "Elaine , Elaine baby... Convicts lie all the time...That's what they do...Lie... They'll say anything to get out of the joint...This guy called me the Saturday before the trial started... I went up to the jailhouse and he spilled the whole story, just like he did on the stand...and that's the truth...case closed...Come on... You and me both got better things to worry about..." he said...

'' Well yeah...but it just came out of the blue... I had to check it out...I had to ask you.." she said.

Trying to change the subject, he commented on her hot roast beef sandwich with gravy...."I see you're having the hot roast beef...Ummmmmmmmm, I've always been partial to the Hot Roast Beef sandwich they serve here..I know Curley's makes a good one...but Sam Mother's tops that...What do you think?" he asked..

"I don't know...I haven't had Curley's. But you're right about this one...It is delish!! I can't imagine anything topping this."she had said.

"Ummmmmmmmm, yes...Well you should try Curley's and then compare...They're both good.." he had said, He was really enjoying his food that day...

"That is a really good Corn Beef special you have there." she had said, smiling.

eyeing his sandwich....

"Ummmmm, Okay, now, the Corn Beef???... The edge goes to Curley...but I've always been partial to the Roast Beef served in here." he said as he chowed down...

That had been the gist of their conversation... He had left the diner, thinking nothing more about it...or her..

And now, three weeks later... He found himself standing in court with.. Cortland James, the former lead Prosecutor in the case..

And  four lawyers he never heard of... and a unit he never heard of, The Wrongful Conviction/Conviction Integrity Unit. and that disgusting convict, Tommy Strickland..

and that super liberal bleeding heart  judge making this pronouncement...

"After hearing arguments and seeing evidence presented by both sides for the past three days I have made my ruling... I see that indeed there is enough compelling evidence here for me to set aside the original conviction and order a new trial...However, due to the defendent's past history I will rule that he stay incarcerated in the city jail until such time a new trial date is set." she said..

He was livid and a little afraid of what it might reveal about him later on.

He thought about her mostly, Elaine Young, Assistant District Attorney and second chair on the original case.....He wondered... He checked her phone records....There were no phone calls made to any of these four attorneys or to the Wrongful Conviction/Conviction Integrity Unit as a whole.. So ,he wondered...WHO PUT THEM ON TO THIS CASE??? This inmate, Tommy Strickland was too damn stupid to know of the existence of the Wrongful Conviction, Conviction Integrity Unit.

Someone had to have put them on to this.. It had to have been her...She had asked him about it...and she was the only player in this drama  who didn't show up in court during the three day Bench hearing..

Yeah, it had to be her! He thought..

as his coffee cooled...

III-

Meanwhile, At The Bridge Building-

We were all hunkered down in the conference room belonging to Yvette Jones-Lockwood and her team upstairs from us. Like Olivia and Beverly had the week before..They were allowing us to use their law library to do our research on this case...

"Thanks Vettie...Seems like you and Olivia have been helping me out since law school..."laughed Karen...

"You've helped us out too!  Not as much as we've helped you, but you've helped us just the same." Yvette joked and hugged her good friend.  Karen had lived across the hall from Olivia and Yvette all three years they were in law school...They had had classes together, eventually studied together , graduated together and took and passed the Bar Exam the same day...

"We are almost ready to take this thing to court.."said Brooke...

" For such a simple case, it also appears to be complex." said my wife, Natalie..

I had to agree.. but I wanted to win this case... I loved beating pompus and arrogant prosecutors like Cortland James... 

The three of us researched laws, predicates and like cases one day, then poured over witness statements, autopsy reports and crime scene reports the next day...

 

 

Yvette, Keith and Bee Bee assisted us in our research on those days...It was good having fresh eyes...

They had a media room just like Olivia and Beverly's ...

Yvette, Sofia and Kahlil assisted us in picking potential jurors for our upcoming trial..

Jade gave us new information about our mystery man...

"I was able to view some of my husband's files and talk to some of his informants." said Jade..

Her husband was of course ,Lt. Danny Ho. of Robbery-Homicide..  ..

"There was indeed a man named "Fingers " on the street...A Major shot caller...Problem was...No one knew his birth name and he didn't have a record...but his palm print and his fingerprints...a hand lacking two fingers had shown up on more than a couple Home Invasions...Yet he remained a mystery...He had no police record..He was just a name on the street..Someone they had been looking for , for years.." said Jade.

"That's Good Jade...Whether we locate hm or not...We can use that during the trial." I said.

Their Office Manager, Ms. Virginia...once a great trial lawyer herself.. Helped us out with the proper research as well as Juror selection and potential trial strategy..

She kept us supplied with hot coffee and churros most of the afternoon too!

"Ms. Virginia....Thank Youuuuuuuuuuu so much!" said Natalie.. "These Churros are delish." said Natalie.

"You know, these guys gave us our first defeat...and Olivia and Beverly gave us our second....I see why...They prepare so well.. I'm so glad we are all friends now and working together...So much better  working with them, than against them." said Brooke.

"Yes indeed!" said Natalie.....

We were ready, as ready as we ever could be, to take this thing to trial.

Between our time with Olivia and Beverly and with Yvette and her team...We had worked ourselves to near exhaustion.... Karen had given us the next day off...

At our house... Natalie and I stared at the new bed...

" It's nice having a day off isn't it?" she whispered to me as I took her in my arms..

"Yes....on the train ride home tonight...All I could think about was you and that bed..." I confessed..

''Me too!" she said and we kissed passionately..

"UMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM I'M AS HORNY AS A CAT IN HEAT!!!" Natalie said to me in between hot smouldering kisses..

We hadn't made love in a week... We were often too tired when we got home..

She hung the phone up...disabled the GPS and put both that phone and her personal phone on the charger....

She told Sean..."That was our client... He has a crush on me. I've got to set him straight."said Brooke.

CURLEY'S BAR- COUPLES NIGHT

Despite what everyone had universally said three weeks before.. Here we all were in Curley's Bar enjoying couples night..

You just couldn't beat two free drinks for every two a couple bought..

''Tommy called me last night, just minutes before me and Sean were about to get into something...Asking me when I was coming up to the jailhouse to see him again...saying that he missed me and wanting to know what color were my panties... I hung up on him and put my phone on charger."said Brooke.

"We are going up in a few days....You're going to have to set him straight....For real girl." said Natalie.

Sean however was smiling and talking to me...

Lem rubbed her legs and her feet as he sipped his drinks.

"This has been quite a week...I could use a mini vacay.."laughed Renee.

"Yeah I know what you mean." said her husband, Tyrell..

"Olivia, we can't thank you and Yvette and your teams enough for helping us prepare for this trial." said Brooke.

"Yes, we are sooooo grateful.." said Natalie. 

''We like you guys...We've liked you ever since you almost kicked our butts in that trial."said Olivia, smiling.

 

''We just want you guys to be successful next week." said Donnie Ray.

"You will....We are just coming off of two big trials ourselves...Maybe next week or weekend we'll all do something fun together...."said Beverly..

"Or maybe you guys will do something by yourselves as a couple..A Date night or something."said Nelson.

"We just want you to be successful."said Josie.

"I think you will....I've been following your preparation...I think you have a winning formula."said Paris.

"From what I've seen, I do too." said Bresha.

"Yeah, me too!"said Tony...

"It's been a nice night so far..."said Alfreda.

"Yeah so far." said Rockland..

 

 'We've enjoyed the company this past week.." Yvette said.. She was sitting on her husband's lap..

Gary was smiling...Holding her tightly......

''We've enjoyed you guys company...and we were only too glad to help you guys out."said Keith Jones.

''With Olivia's team and our team helping you guys out...you can't lose." said Bee Bee.

"I hope you're right!" I said.

''Oh we are right...You guys are good and we ought to know."laughed Sofia.

"Yeah, how about that." laughed Kahlil..

Jade laughed...

"I'm still looking into this guy named fingers...His name keeps coming up in a number of things."said Danny Ho.

''Sometimes you gotta go to the street to find a guy like that...And god knows what kind of hole you may have to crawl up into."said Virginia.

''Yes, God only knows."said Jetty.

''So girl...you gonna set him straight Monday right?" said Natalie to Brooke.

''Oh most definitely...He can not be calling my home...." said Brooke sternly...

as we enjoyed our drinks... It had been THREE HOURS without incident...

Detective Swift sat a distance away....He was watching all of us and the company we were keeping...

He was on his fifth beer....

Cortland James walked in with Elaine Young...They were holding hands....We all saw them...We were kind of surprised that they appeared to be a couple, considering he was going to going up against us in court...but that's how things were...She wasn't in court and she wasn't taking part in this at all...

Lt. Tragg walked in...He saw all of us sitting together.....but tonight...he couldn't care less about us...He saw Elaine Young there...And she was with another man, Cortland James...a man he despised.. seeing them together put him in a melancholy mood...He walked over to the bar and ordered a beer.

Seeing those two together kind of took the wind out of his sales.. He surprisingly didn't bother us at all tonight...He just stared at Elaine..

A woman whose bed he was sharing just  weeks ago..now with someone else..

Detective Swift tossed a few dollars on the table and got up....He passed Lt. Tragg as he was leaving..

"Lieutenant" he said.

"How ya doin Will." said Lt. Tragg....

Still staring at Elaine...
