"Okay boys and girls...it's showtime." said Ms. Yvette.

We walked a few blocks to the courthouse- It was indeed showtime!

II-

COURTROOM C-

We had a Black Judge....None of us, having not practiced in Bayside knew who he was...We hoped he'd be fair..

"Good Morning, Good Morning ..I am the honorable Judge Malcolm Fortune..." He said.

Sylvia Lively spoke first-

"Your honor...the defendent, Curtis Sellers brutally raped and murdered Mrs. Abby Stall, the beloved wife of our Deputy District Attorney...We feel that he is a depraved and dangerous individual and should be held without bail." she said. 

 Yvette argued that our client, had no previous arrest record and no prior history of violence...He had been gainfully employed as the personal assistant to Attorney and Judge Abigail Lewis Stall for five years...

Curtis Sellers at by Yvette stoically.

I presented five charactor witnesses...

Beatrice presented her five charactor witnesses...

Sofia presented her five charactor witnesses..

and Kahlil presented his five charactor witnesses..

All twenty of our witnesses testified to our client's stellar personality and general earnestness...

Jade sat quietly....

The Judge was impressed by our oral arguments....but he ruled that Curtis Sellers be released on one million dollars!

One Million Dollars...We didn't have anything even close to a third of what he was asking..

Sylvia smiled snarkily...She had won by default...She wanted him held without bail.. He got bail, but it was so high that we couldn't raise it... The Result....Curtis Sellers remained in prison. 

We were all very disappointed!

 "I'm sorry Curtis...We don't have that kind of money....We thought we'd get you off."said Yvette.

"I'm not blaming you Yvette...You guys did the best you could....It's the system..."said Curtis Sellers..

"If we had been in Philly we would have gotten you out."I said.

"We have something called Night Court where the ADA and the Prosecutor that appear aren't the ones that will be hearing your case."explained Bee Bee.

"And we usually have a Judge that rules in our favor."said Sofia.

"And we have an almost 100 percent sucess rate."said Kahlil.

"I believe you good brother...but that doesn't help me here in Bayside...No disrespect." said Curtis.

Jade looked at him understandably..

"I know how you feel Curtis ,but don't give up...We aren't done yet..." said Yvette.

That afternoon in the diner , we had dinner before we got ready to head home... Ms. Yvette talked to us.

We had good comfort food... Meatloaf and Mashed Potatoes and Green Peas and Hot Biscuits and Gravy and steaming hot cups of coffee...

 

 "Look I know you all feel bad, but It's not like I didn't prepare you guys for this..We are not going to win every battle...You all got so used to winning...so look...We lost this battle, but we haven't and we are not going to lose the war...We are going home and regroup....Maybe I can get his bail reduced... There will be a bond hearing in a few days...I'll be meeting with the judge...What we are going to do is...We go to work like we usually do...." said Ms. Yvette.

"Okay...Kahlil and I will tap into the Bayside Jury pool, find out what kind of jurors we are looking at."I said.

"Sofia and I will do our usual research." said Bee Bee.

"Yeah, Predicates, Like Cases, Laws pertaining to this case, the works."said Sofia.

"Yeah, we'll come to court with receipts ,like we usually do."said Kahlil.

''And I'll keep digging...Tomorrow I'm going to the morgue and to the crime scene.." said Jade.

"Good..We are down...but we aint out.." said Yvette, smiling.

Somehow when when she talked to us softly like this, it made the whole world seem alright!

III-

We all were home after a long work day and a night in Night Court.

After we all got home that night..We were all settled down with our significant others.. What better way to end a long work day like we had  than to be making love.?

"Who is prosecuting the case Vettie...I know Stall can't."said Karen.

"Sylvia Lively...can you believe it?" said Ms. Yvette.

"That's the girl that sued you and the partners...Used to work at your firm right?" said Karen Page.

"Yupper..She's an assistant District Attorney out in Bayside now...She's pretty successful, Her record is 50-1, Not bad... Apparently she's found her niche."said Yvette.

"Guess who the one loss was to?" said Natalie.

"Us...it was her first case." said David.

"So apparently she hasn't lost since then."said Brooke.

"She's built a reputation of beating inexperienced first year Public Defenders.."said Sean.

"Yeah wait until she faces you guys."said Zoey..

''Well she won in the Arraignment kind of... She wanted him held without bail...The Judge gave him bail."said Yvette.

"So actually you guys won..He got bail...It's just soo damn high. 1.5 million, damn!" said Lem.

"Exactly!...She won the battle...but she hasn't won the war." said Renee.

"Hear that folks?  "said Ms. Yvette , hugging Bee Bee and Sofia.. "We are Down for now, but not out." she said.

Kahlil and I smiled.

Renee's husband Tyrell said "You'll be alright.

Both Paris and Tony were sound asleep...

"Hey where is Jade?" asked Lee..

''She's going to Bayside to do some investigating..."said Yvette.

"The Fun part of the job."laughed Matthew.

"An Investigator is an Attorney's best friend."said Nina.

"Indeed " agreed her husband, Carlos.

As our train rumbled on towards our building..

Sylvia was at the City Law Library researching her case and other cases on her docket..

She liked it here and it was quiet...peaceful, away from Corado's wandering hands and unwanted kisses and advances...

Her phone rang.... It was Corado...it was the 27th call from him this morning.. She had disabled the GPS so he couldn't track her.. and her phone was on vibrate...She needed to get some work done..
