 Federal Court unlike City Court was not backed up and so there would be a preliminary hearing.. City Court had us spoiled...

Judge Juanita Tillman sighed...

"I haven't heard enough to suggest that a crime was committed , at least by this man, but Mrs. Jones-Lockwood do you wish to offer a defense? If not...Trial and Jury selection will begin on Monday.."

And Assistant U.S. Attorney Michael Lawrence was the prosecutor... He sat with his beautiful investigator..

Ingrid Stevenson....

Our client, William Martin sat contritely....He couldn't believe he was in a situation such as he was...

 

 ''Don't worry William...I'm certain there won't be any surprises in this case." said Ms. Yvette.

This seemed too easy, too open and shut..I was waiting for the other shoe to drop.

Bee Bee stood wide eyed and eager to get started..

So Did Sofia.

Kahlil was like me,  He too thought this all seemed too easy, too open and shut..He like I was waiting for the other shoe to drop.

Jade had been to the crime scene and to the hospital....She was looking into the woman who followed Nadine from Bayside to Philadelphia and examining  extra  unidentified DNA and fingerprint evidence found at the crime scene that Lt. Tragg either purposefully overlooked or never knew about.

Michael Lawrence had a gift of gab and an excellent talent for weaving a convincing tail... For 45 minutes he weaved a fantastic story that said our client and the deceased were stealing opiates..mainly fentynol and reselling it on the street...He theorized with absolutely no proof that they had some type of dispute which resulted in William Martin strangling her.....he was really stretching things..

Ms. Yvette argued that "The Prosecutor has absolutely no proof of his allegations...but I invite him to try and prove this though...He has put together a very compelling and fascinating story, but alas, it's just that a story....My client only knew the deceased for two weeks prior to her death and knew nothing of her involvement with drugs." said Yvette in a short statements. 

Michael Lawrence presented huge glossies of the death scene and the autopsy report...He called people we couldn't question....People from the M.E.'s office, Crime Scene Investigators, Policemen... Then he called eyewitnesses from Nadine's block....People who saw my client with her on the night of her death.. We pounced!

Sofia, Ms. Yvette and Bee Bee questioned them, reminded them of what they told the police..and got everylast one of them to admit that they only saw them walking together and laughing and did not see or hear anything afterwards...

Michael Lawrence objected vigorously.....

But Kahlil, Ms. Yvette and I offered objections , legal objections...

The Judge agreed with our objections....

This sent AUSA Mike Lawrence into a furious rage...with him tossing his suit jacket into the sky....

Judge Juanita Tillman was having none of it..

"I WILL NOT HAVE THIS IN MY COURTROOM....YOU CALM YOURSELF DOWN...IF YOU PUT ON A CHILDISH DISPLAY LIKE THAT AGAIN, I WILL HOLD YOU IN CONTEMPT" she said.

Bee Bee cracked up laughing..

Mike Lawrence glared at her with an icy hatred....He did not like being laughed at...

For the first time, our client, William Martin smiled...For the first time he looked like he had some hope.

 "He's got nothing and he knows it." said Yvette.

''I thought he had a smoking gun.. He's got nothing.Even less than I thought." I said.

FOUR DAYS LATER-

Surprisingly...Michael Lawrence managed to draw this thing out to four days....Judge Tillman looked at us.. She sighed....

"We have heard the Prosecution's argument in full, do you wish to offer a defense or go to trial Mrs. Jones-Lockwood?" she said. 

 "We'll wait for trial Your honor." said Ms. Yvette.

"Okay...Trial will begin on Monday Morning in this courtroom at 10:00 AM...Attorneys be on time and be ready for trial." said the Judge, who pounded her gavel... She sighed and took her glasses off.

"Wowwww " I said Smiling..

"I'm betting AUSA Mike Lawrence didn't want that.." said Bee Bee.

"Noooooo he wanted this wrapped up quick..." said Sofia.

"Okay, we gotta go hard at him next week.." said Kahlil....

"I got a call from Goggins DNA Laboratories...I have to go." said Jade.

"Okay Jade...We'll see you tonight." said Ms. Yvette. she walked over to AUSA Mike Lawrence...

'Still want to go through with this?  Come on...even the Judge doesn't believe this farce you've put up."she said.

" You're scared aren't you?   Scared to go to trial... I have no intentions of backing down.." he said.

"Suit yourself..." said Ms. Yvette.

"You know, I thought Lt. Tragg was the biggest most stubborn butthead I ever saw...But you could give him a run for his money."said our client.Dr. Martin.

''Don't talk to me." said AUSA Michael Lawrence. 

 "Let's go.... I could use a cold one." said Ms. Yvette.

"Yeah, I could use one too!" I said.

"It's 4:00 pm....I imagine everybody is heading over to the No ID Bar about now.."said Bee Bee.

"Join us tonight William, No ID Bar isn't far from your hotel.."said Sofia.

"Yeah you're free on Bail, you're not under curfew." said Kahlil.

"I know of it...Hipster Bar....I think I will come out." said our client.

II-

AT GOGGINS DNA LABORATORIES-

Jade had discovered the existence of a woman...Thelma Barfield...A middle aged white woman who had worked in Bayside with Nadine Raymond....They had been close...When Nadine was fired from her job.. Thelma followed her to the hospital in Philadelphia.. She was not a Doctor...She was a Nurses aid... She had a criminal record too...Arrested twice for selling Opiates...She had been convicted on a lesser charge and spent a year in Federal lockup...She somehow managed to keep this from being known at both hospitals she worked out...

Jade discovered some unidentified DNA and a partial  print at the crime scene, Nadine's home...She managed to get some knives, spoons and a fork as well as a drinking glass from the hospital cafeteria that Thelma Barfield had eaten and drank from...She took this to Goggins DNA Laboratories for an analysis.

"I've got some interesting information for you..."said Dr. Goggins...

"I am using a new service. GEDmatch, a service that collects voluntarily given samples of DNA. It's like Ancestry, or 23andMe. People submit their DNA in hopes of finding relatives or more information about where their ancestors came from, and in this case? They found a DNA sample that was a partial match to the Golden State Killer. That person wasn't the killer, of course, but it gave them a place to start. Detectives then went back through the family, and one named popped: DeAngelo, the former officer who had lived in the area of the attacks as they were happening.

By taking this DNA, I hope to do the same thing.. Finding a killer via the DNA of a family member is a fairly new thing, but when it was used in the Golden State Killer case, that wasn't a first. They started looking for close DNA matches instead of exact, and the results were a fairly long list of names... but a list, nonetheless. After factoring in geographical information, they homed in on 21-year-old Jason Ward. The DNA matched, Ward was arrested, entered a guilty plea, and was handed a life sentence. In the UK alone, familial DNA techniques have been used in 212 criminal cases between 2009 and 2018. I say that to say this... This was much much easier than my previous case.... I zeroed in on  THELMA BARFIED....I got a 99 .5 percent match." said Dr. Goggins.

"Oh my god....Thank you...Her latent print and her DNA was found on the body...She was questioned last week by AUSA Mike Lawrence's investigator and she said she's never been to Ms. Raymond's house...which is a lie... I've got an eye witness who remembered seeing her that night in the neighborhood and another eyewitness who said she was asked where Nadine lived.."said Jade.

"Oh My God...Didn't Lt. Tragg do the initial investigation? He missed this?" asked Dr. Goggins..

"He did and because He DNA and The print did not belong to William Martin and was unidentifiable, he just pushed it aside."said Jade incredulously..

"Apparently the Feds did too...It's a wonder how these people keep their jobs." said Dr. Goggins.

"I knowwwwwwwwww" laughed Jade.

HOURS LATER AT THE NO ID BAR-

Jade met us at the bar with the information she got from the laboratory... 

 "WOW! Jade, good work... You are worth your weight in gold." laughed Ms. Yvette.

"Great investigative work Jade.." said Yvette's husband, Gary...

"Jade is our MVP." I said,.

"We can wrap this case up quick!" said Bee Bee.

" Really quick...That stubborn thick headed Mike Lawrence wouldn't listen to reason and didn't do the work." said Sofia.

"He has a pretty good investigator...I can't believe she missed this.." asked Kahlil.

''She knew about Thelma Barfield...She questioned her.. Barfield told her she'd never been to Nadine Raymond's house.. but I have two eyewitnesses who will testify that they saw her the night Nadine was murdered in the neighborhood and that she actually asked one of them where the house was."said Jade.

"Lt. Tragg and Ingrid Stevenson dropped the ball on this...I'm surprised at Ingrid..She was once one of my detectives before becoming an investigator for the feds...She's better than that." said Jade's husband, Lt. Danny Ho.

''She got careless, but thank god, Jade didn't." laughed Ms. Virginia.

"Yes, thank god!" said her husband, Jetty.

Our client William Martin did come out , he sat in the corner with his ex-wife...

Coroner, Marcy Templeton , who he recently divorced...

"Vettie if you guys can wrap up your case next week and stay out of trouble..We can go on our junket next weekend." laughed Olivia.

"Believe Me...We are gonna try...We should have this case wrapped up by Wednesday...Tuesday at the earliest..." said Ms. Yvette.

 

"It sounds like it's going to be a good time."said Donnie Ray...

"The Hotel has a spa and a gym and in indoor heated pool according to Rollie."said Beverly..

"He hasn't steered us wrong yet." said Nelson.

"No he hasn't." said Josie.

"I'll still be able to take my classes virtually..."said Paris..

''And in between Thursday and Monday, we'll all be able to relax and decompress." said Bresha.

"I'm all for it."said Tony.

"I'm certainly looking forward to it." said Alfreda.

"I am too!" said Rollie. 

"This is my kind of night...Not too cold, not too warm." said Jazzy, laying in her husband's arms...

"I imagine in the situation he's in..he probably needs a friend." said Kahlil.

"Maybe he shouldn't have been catting around and they never would have gotten divorced." said Jade.

"That's a thought." said her husband, Danny Ho, smiling wryly...

"I'm bettin bedsprings will be squeaking tonight." observed Virginia.

"Oh No doubt." said her husband, Jetty.

At 2:00 AM we all boarded the buses and headed home, most of us sleepy, a few of us drunk, horny or whatever...but safe none the less.

It had been a relaxing weekend...Saturday Morning Brunch at the No ID BAR....All of us staying and working out at the Gym and Spa in our building across the street..

So Here we are in court..for the start of William Martin's trial.

Judge Juanita Tillman was on the bench...I could look at her and tell she wanted to be done with this trial already and it hadn't even started.

William Martin, our client was anxious....He wanted to get this over with...

Mike Lawrence was no slouch when it came to Voir Dire... he was a very astute and intelligent man...He saw what we were trying to do and challenged every one of Kahlil and My picks..We wound up getting a 7-5 split going our way. This was probably his best moment in the entire trial. 

 Ms. Yvette felt the same way, but she sat back, more confident then I'd ever seen her and we'd worked close to 100 cases together.

I shared her optimism, but I was certain AUSA Mike Lawrence had some surprise up his sleeve that we didn't know about...I was certain of it..

"I couldn't find Thelma Barfied...She hasn't been at work in four days and no one who knows her has seen her. I went to her apartment... "That's alright...Keep trying... His prosecution will be over soon , He has nothing." assured Yvette.

Tuesday in a side bar the Judge dismissed the Drug Smuggling and Conspiracy charges... She saw not s pec of evidence to prove that....she challenged AUSA Mike Lawrence to produce some evidence, any evidence in Discovery to prove this... He had nothing..So those charges were dismissed.

He was enraged and came very close to being cited for contempt.....

He argued with no proof or merit that during rough sex, our client strangled Nadine Raymond and hastily left her home...

Kahlil and I produced a photo of coffee brewing ...It was in the crime scene photos and it backed up our client's claims that she was alive and brewing coffee when he left....

Mike Lawrence gave a lengthy 90 minute sumnation that bored the jury and put at least two of them to sleep and closed....

He looked like he actually thought he had won the case.

Yvette opened up our defense on Wednesday Morning.... we hadn't located Thelma Barfield, but we had enough going for us... We presented the deceased sordid history... Ms. Yvette showed the jury a photo of the deceased..

"This is the late Dr. Nadine Raymond...."Last year Dr. Nadine Raymond was arrested at her last job, Bayside Methodist Hospital after she was accused of repeatedly stealing drugs from a hospital and swapping them out with saline earlier this year. According to court documents, Dr. Raymond, 35, has been charged with three felony counts of Diversion of Controlled Substance. Raymond  was charged for the incidents that authorities said took place in the Bayside Pa. Medical Center from April 2022 to May 2023. A law enforcement officer said they were made aware by the Director of Pharmacy at Bayside Methodist about several syringes and vials that, during his routine inventory check, appeared to have been tampered with in the nurses’ station’s automatic dispensing cabinet.

Upon further investigation, court records show Dr. Raymond had access to these syringes and had drawn up some Hydromorphone and Fentanyl before replacing the drugs with normal saline solution and putting the tampered vials and syringes back into the cabinet. “On April 20, 2023, at 07:13 hours, (Raymond) went to the M8N_NE Pyxis and overrode a transaction. (The) affiant observed (Raymond) selecting hydromorphone and removing the substance from the vial with a syringe. (McNeilly) also selected saline and removed the substance with a syringe. (Raymond) then filled the empty hydromorphone with the saline solution. (McNeilly) was observed on video surveillance 11 times total between the dates of April 20, 2023, and May 10, 2023, adulterating hydromorphone with saline.” On April 24 and 25, and again on May 5, she’s accused of doing the same thing with the saline and a vial of Fentanyl. Court records show that on one of those days, Dr. Raymond was caught on surveillance injecting herself in the hand with a Fentanyl syringe before returning to work. The pharmacy manager of the hospital stated McNeilly was overriding their automatic drug dispensing system and accessing medicine that was not prescribed to her or her patients by a pharmacist. “The adulterated medicine, now back in circulation, then had the potential to be administered by other medical professionals to patients, unaware that the medicine had been tampered with,” the court documents stated. When confronted with the video evidence on May 15, Dr. Raymond admitted to gaining access to the drugs but said she threw them away. She was then asked why she took the medications to which she responded, “I hear voices telling me to do it.” She ultimately denied taking the drugs at work despite investigators saying that they noticed visible bruises on her arms. After the evidence was gathered, Dr. Raymond was fired immediately from Bayside Methodist Hospital. The hospital shared the following statement with TV10 News. “This employee’s conduct was unacceptable and never tolerated at Bayside Methodist. The employee was fired immediately and law enforcement was notified. We have extensive safeguards in place to protect our patients.”

Her charges were mysteriously dropped.....

People at her most recent job, Mendelson Clinic in Philadelphia were unaware of her recent legal troubles. or so they say...But The DEA has been watching her all along...She was definitely our target." she said.

Bee Bee , Kahlil and Sofia brought up Thelma Barfield, who followed Nadine from the hospital in Bayside to the Hospital in Philadelphia...

AUSA Mike Lawrence demanded that she be produced.

I argued that while she is not present...She has been subpoenaed and we have enough evidence her to be presented during trial...I conceded that she is not on trial.. but I argued that the evidence stood for itself.

The Judge smiled and allowed it..

Ms. Yvette smiled at me proudly....

She presented fingerprint evidence...Fingerprints pulled off of the skin around Ms. Raymond's neck and DNA evidence leading to her discovered in the Raymond home that was overlooked by the police initially because they couldn't identify it at the time..

Bee Bee called lab technicians from Goggins Independent Labs...

Sofia called Lab Technicians from the Medical Examiner's Office to piggy back on this evidence...

Kahlil called Mike Lawrence's investigator who acknowledged she had interviewed Thelma Barfield , who  told her she had never been to Nadine's home...

 Ms. Yvette and I presented witnesses that said they spoke to her the night of the murder and that she asked where Nadine's house was...

We closed our case on Thursday Morning...

We knew that even without Thelma Barfield in court we had presented enough reasonable doubt to this jury....

TWENTY FIVE MINUTES LATER-

The jury returned quickly......

"Has the jury come to a conclusion?" asked Judge Juanita Tillman..

"Yes we have your honor." said the jury foreman...

"Bailiff" she said.

The Baillif took the verdict and passed it to the Judge, who read it without any emotion on her face and passed it back..

"Read it." she said.

"UNITED STATES VS WILLIAM MARTIN ON THE CHARGE OF CAPITAL MURDER!! WE FIND THE DEFENDENT!  NOT GUILTY!"

"OHHHHHHH THANK YOU!"said Dr. William Martin, his nightmare was over! 

 "I told you William...When I looked at Discovery alone, I was like where's the beef... This guy  has no case.. No case at all...I didn't even want to try it ..It was so empty."said Ms. Yvette.

"I kept thinking, he's got to have something..A smoking gun, something more.. He had nothing...Nothing new." I said.

"This trial was like arguing the Preliminary all over again.." said Bee Bee.

"Except with Jurors" said Sofia.

"Bottom line is, we got the win." said Kahlil..

''We got it without Thelma Barfield." said Jade.

Federal Public Defender , Sean Marks was present... He enjoyed every minute of it.. he enjoyed 

Dr. Marcy Templeton was in the courtroom...She was happy for the verdict...She didn't hang around, She quietly left....

AUSA Mike Lawrence couldn't believe he had begun the year with a loss....He was livid...he was about to take his suit jacket off and hurl it to the rafters...but he looked at the Judge.

The Judge looked at him sternly.....She wasn't having it...And he knew it..

He quietly left the courthouse.....

EPILOUGE-

ONE WEEK LATER-

"PEEEEEEEEEEEE YOUUUUUU, THIS SMELL IS HORRIBLE!" said a crime scene investigator-

"That's because this body has been in here for about three weeks....She's mummified..." said another crime scene investigator...

"We found a wallet in her purse.. Her name is Thelma Barfield.. she works at the Mendelson Clinic. I found a  job Identification badge in her purse.

''She's got a nice neat bullet hole right between the eyes."said Dr. Hazel Baylor.

"I found a suitcase of Fentanyl bottles under the bed....and about $2000.00 in cash." said Dr. Marcy Templeton..

"Leave That for the uh Great detective...He should be here soon.......Say how are you and Willima getting along? I see he has sent you flowers practically everyday since his acquittal."said Hazel.

"He sends me flowers and he calls me everyday...He says he wants to get married again..." gushed Marcy.

"You think you might marry him again?" asked Hazel...

"I don't know...Anything is possible...It's going to take some time...I know that." sighed Marcy...

Just then, Lt. Tragg walked in...

"PEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE YOUUUUUUUUUUUUUU, it smells like hell in here.. What have we got here?" he asked..

While Miles Away... It was Business as usual for us...

We were in the conference room having our end of case meeting.. Sofia, Kahlil, Bee Bee and I..Chaired by Ms. Yvette...

"Another successful case down." said Sofia.

''And hopefully, we can have a little down time." said Kahlil.

"Tomorrow, Wednesday  is our Friday....We leave Thursday on Olivia's Junket."said Bee Bee.

"I can't wait." I said.

"Yall did good work....You all deserve a break." said Ms. Yvette.

"I heard that they found Thelma Barfield this morning.. dead in her apartment..She'd been dead for three weeks.. Somebody shot and killed her.. They found a suitcase full of fentanyl in her closet and $2000.00 in cash." said Jade..

"She and Nadine were probably stealing and selling the drugs stolen from the hospital together and something went terribly wrong....I don't care to know what or who?" said Ms. Yvette. She took a pastry and a bagel, spread some Cream Cheese on it and munched on it, as did the rest of us..

"I hear you." said Ms. Virginia...
