VENTURES: Mock Trials

We Held Two Mock Trials....

Olivia, in keeping her word to Yvette, did confer with us on the case..

Me, Bee Bee, Sofia and Kahlil were ecstatic to hear from her.. If Ms. Yvette was like a Second Mother to us.. Olivia was an Auntie, who we equally loved..

Our First Mock Trial was in an empty courtroom in Camden we were allowed to use.

This was to give us a sense of reality somewhat... It was good living around and working with such talented friends who were like us also attorneys... Olivia, Beverly, Nelson, Josie, Bresha, her husband, Tony, Ray, his wife and Olivia and Beverly's cousin, Kayla, Jazzy, her husband, Dabnis, Jessica, her husband, Chip and our office manager Ms. Virginia.

Ms. Virginia was no longer an attorney, she had been disbarred...but she had a great deal of legal knowledge and she was only too glad to be able to share it with us...She truly loved being in our company and sharing her legal knowledge with us..She was so grateful that none of us judged her for her past as all of us accepted her.

We laid our case out in front of them and they all came with questions designed to trip us up, Things we didn't think about previously...

Sofia and Bee Bee took copious notes of all of that...

Kahlil and I asked questions and also took notes.... Perhaps I could have used help like this the last time I fought a death penalty case.. It might have made the difference between life and death.

Donnie Ray, Josie's husband, Paris and our investigator ,Ms. Jade also came along...but since they weren't attorneys..They didn't take part in the closed door courtroom sessions..

We got in our two Mini Buses and drove to a Camden Riversharks Baseball game that night...It was a good time for all of us... We missed Ms. Yvette and Gary, but we knew they were getting a nice vacation and a nice rest.

We went to a nearby eatery and had Steak Hoagie's ,Steak Fries and Cokes..

It was a great night. Plus it had been a learning experience for nearly everyone involved.

Ms. Virginia still believed we needed something more.. A Mock trial in front of actual Judges..

Through her boyfriend, Jetty Dukes.

She arranged for us to actually try our case in front of some actual Judges...Judges we could trust..

And so in a city courtroom...

tried our case in front of some judges.

They pelted us with questions...but because of our early Mock Trial...We were more than ready...We didn't get tripped up once...

The session ended with all of the judges quite impressed..

Jetty convinced us all to join him for Breakfast at Sam Mother's diner.. He said it would be alright.

"Virginia..You know I wouldn't have done this for anyone but you don't you?" said Jetty in Sam Mother's Diner, a little later..

"I know...Thank You...I wanted to make sure my little guys and gals were ready to argue before the State Supreme Court again." said Virginia , smiling.

"Oh hell, they got through all of those lawyers in your building and through us judges.. They're a lock to win their appeal...We are smarter than those justices." said Jetty , with a wink,

Virginia busted out laughing..

"Ummmmmph, I just want to kiss your sweet lips." whispered Jetty to Virginia.

She leaned over towards him..

"Come on then, pucker up." she whispered..

They kissed passionately....

Jetty's everything Omelette arrived.

Virginia marveled at the size of the omelette..

"Jetty that thing will kill you." she said.

The Four of us sat in a booth , across the restaurant...We were used to eating together like this ,since law school.

"I'm ready to go...I think we got this guys." I said.

"I'm glad you got your confidence back."said my wife, Bee Bee , rubbing my back..

"Yeah, we are going to be alright." said Kahlil.

"Si..I believe that.." said Sofia..

Our Eggs, Hash browns, sausages and coffee arrived.

Ms. Jade walked in and pulled up a table near our booth..

She only ordered a coffee..

"My husband told me Lt. Tragg is furious about you guys reopening this case..." she said.

"Why??, It has nothing to do with him? He wasn't the arresting officer/" asked Kahlil.

''He's always furious about something." I said.

"This case reflects badly on his ex partner and his late revered Uncle Jack,

not to mention ,Olivia,Beverly and company and our friends at the Innocence Project just overturned a case his ex partner , him and his late father were involved in and the city is facing yet another law suit for wrongful arrest,violation of civil rights.. He's not too happy about all of this." said Jade.

"He's always angry about something."said Sofia.

''Heads up."said Bee Bee.

Lt. Tragg walked into the diner.. He saw us sitting in the booth...He walked over to our booth.

"IS YVETTE BACK YET?" he asked.

None of us answered him..We kept eating and talking as though he wasn't there.

"I BELIEVE I ASKED YOU A QUESTION!" he demanded..

"OHHHHH THE SILENT TREATMENT EH?" he said.. "YVETTE TEACH YOU THAT?" he bellowed.

We still didn't answer..We kept eating, drinking coffee and talking about the baseball game we had been to in Camden recently.. Ms. Yvette had taught us that...She and Olivia both said that arguing with him only fueled him...Jade sometimes couldn't help it...and Beverly was the same way..They both often gave him what for...Like Ms. Virginia and Ms. Alfreda.. That kept him fueled and riled up more. Trying to rationally explain something to him was a waste of time too...It was as if you hadn't said a word.. He just disregarded anything you said...So, we just ignored him, acted like he wasn't there..Which was hard to do, because he still stood there and stared at you balefully and whined and complained..

The main reason why all of us ate at the cafeteria in our building and didn't venture to Sam Mother's at all.. We didn't have to be bothered with him.

"I'M GONNA ASK YOU NICELY..TO CARRY YOUR ASS UP TO THAT COUNTER AND ORDER YOUR MEAL....BUT I'M NOT ASKIN AGAIN LIEUTENANT!" said Jetty Dukes.

"ARE YOU THREATENING ME BUDDY? BECAUSE I DON'T TAKE TOO KINDLY TO THREATS!" said Lt. Tragg..

Before anything could go down... Two Sherriff's Deputies vehicles drove up...Four Beefy Sheriff's deputies arrested Lt. Tragg yet again for violating C& D.

"OH FOR THE LOVE OF PETE!! COME ONNNNN!" he yelled as they dragged him out..

Locking him up in the courthouse holding facility known as "The Cooler/"

Naturally, we all howled with laughter at the sight of him being hauled away again....

II-

We hadn't seen Ms. Yvette in a week...We sure did miss her...In Atlantic City... It rained a little the night before.. They didn't have an umbrella and they got soaked ,running and laughing back to their air bnb.

"I'd like to say we beat the rain, but we didn't..." said Ms. Yvette, plopping down on the bed.

''What are you staring at ?" she asked smiling..

"Your blouse is soaking wet...Your breasts are just , they just seem as though they're exploding through...Are you wearing a bra?" asked Gary..

Yvette laughed...

"A Bralette if you must know...Come on..Let's get out of these wet clothes." said Yvette, undressing and laying her skirt and blouse across a clothes rack so that they could dry...

Gary also undressed and laid his clothing across the other clothing rack...He had stripped down to his boxers...

He took Yvette in his arms and kissed her passionately...

Yvette felt safe in his arms and warm....

Outside, the rain began to come down harder and pour mightily...In Yvette and Gary's room they were oblivious to all of it...

It began to thunder and lightning a little..

"We held two mock trials.Olivia, Beverly and the guys at work all went over to the Camden courtroom and they went through it.. The kids took notes and asked good questions.. Then Virginia got Jetty and some of the Judges we like to have another mock trial in a city courtroom....It was even better..The Judges were all impressed.. I think we are ready."said Jade.

"Thanks Jade... I know they are ready..Tell them I have complete faith in them" said Ms. Yvette.

"Oh and Lt. Tragg earned himself another two to three day stint in the cooler."said Jade.

''So what else is new?" laughed Ms. Yvette. It was the first time she had called to check in on everything in a week.

Gary was just waking up....

He was fumbling through Yvette's suitcases looking at some new panties she had bought that he hadn't seen her in...

"I spoke to Ms. Yvette yesterday..She said to take tomorrow off... She said we need a day to relax before we go to Harrisburg...She heard about the Mock Trials. She 's very proud of the four of you..

Ms. Virginia, she said just a half day for you..You can leave anywhere between 11:00 and 12:00

"WOWWWW NICE! What you doin tomorrow Homey?" asked Kahlil.

"Well I'm packing my things, I might just chill around the crib.." I said.

"YOU KNOW WHAT HE'S GOING TO DO!!! He's going to want to spend the whole day in bed on top of me." laughed Bee Bee.

"I don't why Kahlil even asked him that...He's going to want to do the same thing with me." laughed Sofia.

"Well that can be uh somewhat relaxing.." said Ms. Virginia as we all burst into raucous laughter...

"Be on the steps at 7:30...I'll drive us to the train station..." said Jade..

"I wish I was going...WOW! You all must be excited.." said Ms. Virginia.

"This will be the second time for me.. Last time it didn't go so well..I went to the Governor's Office and the Lt. Governor and neither would reverse the decision...And we lost the case and the man ,who was executed.

"Ironically...We went back with Olivia and Beverly and crew and a ACLU Attorney a year later and got the same law reversed...Unfortunately , it was too late to save our friend." said Sofia.

"Friend?" asked Ms. Virginia.

''He was a guy Sofia and I knew from the neighborhood. he was already in jail for one unrelated murder and got jacked up on a second murder that he didn't physically commit..He was with a robbery crew.

The actual triggerman was executed..and the other guy committed suicide."said Bee Bee,

"The State wanted it's pound of flesh and it was an election year and so they executed him...Despite our argument." said Kahlil.

"I read the deposition from that case... It was still brilliant, even in a losing effort.. Your case this time is stronger...and you are three years more experienced..You'll win this time.I'm certain.." said Virginia.

"With Help from all of our Guardian Angels." said Sofia.

Kahlil, Bee Bee and I all joined Sofia by putting our hands in one circle and reciting what we always recited to each other since law school.

"SQUAD FOREVER!"

Jade and Virginia looked on and smiled.

In Atlantic City at their Air BNB, Yvette took the bedspreads and pillow cases

and tossed them in the washer and dryer that was in the basement of their Air BNB...

Yvette spent the rest of the day, washing and drying her and Gary's clothing...

Gary, who among other things was an excellent cook...

He prepared a nice thick New York Strip Steak, A Baked potato , a fresh garden salad and served dinner with a bottle of a nice port.

"This is sooooo romantic Gary Honey." said Yvette as she sat down to the table.

"I'm glad you like it."laughed Gary raffishly as they sat down and feasted... This had been like a second honeymoon for them both...Just the two of them, no worry about work or anything brewing at home.

They needed to do this more he thought.. All of the couples on their block needed to take time off like this.

Tomorrow we were headed to Harrisburg to argue before the State Supreme Court...

I wasn't gun shy...I was looking forward to another crack at these guy...I was determined to save this guy's life no matter what I had to do..

We were all at home...

EIGHT TO NINE HOURS had passed by.
