At The Edge Of The Beach

 We all attended Ms. Yvette's father's funeral..

Yvette and Gary and Yvette's mother sat in the front.. It was only the second time we had met Ms. Yvette's mother.

Me, Bee Bee, Sofia, Kahlil, Jade and Ms. Virginia sat behind them..

Olivia, Donnie Ray, Beverly, Nelson, Josie and Paris, Bresha and Tony and Ms. Alfreda and Rockland sat behind us...

Also in attendance was  Jazzy and Dabnis, Kayla and Ray, Jessie and Chip, ADA Karen Page and B.L. Benz, Brenda , Zoey and Lem..

Even two of our founding partners attended.. Mr. McCluskey and Mr. Pratt.

Ms. Yvette was moved to tears by all of the love and support she received..

and at the burial for the father she had never really known that well....

A DAY LATER-

''Vettie, thanks for letting me spend the night.." said Mrs. Jones.

"Ma, come on now." said Yvette.

"It was sooo nice seeing Olivia again and meeting your friends and your two bosses...They think the world of you...and I know I -I didn't say it a lot...but so do I.. I've always been proud of you...You've never disappointed me, not once. You're a big time lawyer...You're married, you have a lovely home...and a great husband...I'd like to visit with you more and like you to visit me.." said Mrs. Jones.

"I'd like that a lot Ma..." said Yvette, hugging her mother...

"Your daddy was proud of you too...When I went to his apartment to help with the clean out...There were photos of your college graduation, your law school graduation and every newspaper clipping about a big case you were involved in... He told everyone who would listen..."My baby girl is a lawyer." said her mother.

Ms. Yvette smiled warmly..She was so happy to know that her parents were proud of her.. She just wished they had said it more.

"You guys have a great time and don't worry about a thing...Don't even think about what's going on here in Philly, just get some rest and relaxation......Bev, Nelson and I will check in on your guys and gals.. They'll be fine okay?" said Olivia to Gary and Yvette.

"Okay....Thanks Liv. Love you." said Yvette.

"Love you even more." said Olivia.

"We'll see ya in a few." said Gary..

As they pulled off and headed for the shore..

down the highway

and over the bridge into New Jersey...

THAT AFTERNOON-

It was after work... Virginia drove Jetty's car to Sam Mother's Diner.. Jetty had another car that he drove mostly... Now that she had her drivers license..He gave her his other car ,so that she could get around.

She had ordered two dinners to go... One for her and one for Jetty when he arrived at her place tonight.

Lt. Tragg arrived shortly after she did.

Naturally, he walked over to where she was waiting on her orders..

"WHERE IS YOUR BOSS LADY?? I NEED TO TALK TO HER!! This death penalty case for this loser, who was convicted and sentenced 20 years ago is all over the news and it's making my late Uncle and my former partner look bad..I need her to nip this in the bud." he said.

"Yvette's father died a week ago..We were all at the funeral two days ago... She's taken some time off and her and Gary have decided to take a little vacation..They're out of town..Don't ask me where they went..I'm not telling you." said Virginia.

Lt. Tragg was surprised to get a straight answer from her....

"When will she be returning?" he asked.

"Probably after this case has been argued before the State Supreme Court. I'm not giving you an exact time and date. " said Virginia.

"You mean to tell me she's going to leave a case of this magnitude in the hands of those four snot nosed kids? I don't believe it." laughed Lt. Tragg.

"You know..They're married and homeowners... They're adults... They have drivers licenses and the last I checked...They're even old enough to drink. Whether you want to ever see them as adults or not. They're fine lawyers...I'm sure they can handle it.. Yvette has complete trust in them and so do I." said Virginia.

"So Do you! Hmmmmmmmph!" snarled Lt. Tragg....

"Your order is up." said Sam Mother.

Ms. Virginia paid for her two orders and gathered them up...

"Thank You Sam." said Virginia, who left a tip. She turned to Lt. Tragg.

''Well as usual, it wasn't a pleasure talking to YOU!" said Virginia as she left the diner.

Lt. Tragg stood at the counter, steaming mad as usual..

Yvette and Gary found a nice quiet Air BNB right off the boardwalk.,...

while Kahlil and I looked at the witness statement...All six of them and the depositions from the original trial....

with Jade helping us.

"I wonder how Ms. Yvette is doing?" said Bee Bee as they worked dilligently...

"Probably better than us...She's not worried about this case." said Sofia.

Ms. Virginia smiled as she helped them with their research....Part of her wished she was arguing this case before the State Supreme Court.

"I wonder if we'll face the same justices I faced three years ago.?" I asked.

"They're there for life homeslice and I haven't heard of any one of them dying, so yeah." said Kahlil.

"This isn't the same type of case..." said Jade.

"It's worse...Our guy is accused of killing a cop!" I said.

We had no idea that at this very moment...

Lt. Tragg was in our building.. Not to see us, but to see  ADA Karen Page...He still had no idea we worked in this building..

He barged in on a case in progress.

He was astounded to see Olivia, Beverly, Donnie Ray, Nelson, Josie and Bresha along with Jessica Sanchez-Burrows and her husband, Charles "Chip" Burrows...

The case was being brought to ADA Karen Page's attention by Attorneys Olivia Bennett-Alexander, Beverly West-East, Donnie Ray Alexander, Investigator and attorneys Nelson East, Josie Boyd, Bresha Billips and Innocence Project Attorneys Jessica Sanchez-Burrows and her husband, Charles "Chip" Burrows. This was also a case made by Lt. Tragg's old partner, Dominic Evans, now serving life for a murder himself.. Lt. Tragg had nothing to do with this case..Another man wrongfully convicted on suspicious evidence was about to have his sentence overturned and be released after 21 years behind bars.

"Arthur ,You can't barge in here like this...We are in the middle of a hearing..You have to leave." said ADA Karen Page.

"I was looking for Yvette Jones and her crew...They are trying a case I'm very interested in...I have to see them...I went to their office in town and as usual they weren't there...I thought they'd be having this hearing here with you at WRONGFUL CONVICTION" explained Lt. Tragg, not paying any attention at all to what she had just say.

"It's not a Wrongful Conviction Case...They will be trying that case in Harrisburg in a few days before the State Supreme Court.. Yvette won't be involved anyway...Her Father died and was funeralized a few days ago.. She and her husband went out of town.."said Karen.

"What about the kids? I can't seem to locate them..." asked Lt. Tragg, who had no idea he was just three floors below us.

''What are you going to do if you do find them?? The Hearing has been set into motion, there is nothing you can do about it.. And anyway, I haven't seen them in days...Now you've got to go!" said Karen Page.

"GET THE HELL OUT OF HERE...GET OUT!!!!..YOU'RE HOLDING UP A HEARING!" screamed an angry Judge Percy Reynolds, who despised Lt. Tragg... "BAILIFFS, GET HIM OUTTTT!" he screamed as Three big beefy baillifs tossed Lt. Tragg out of the conference room physically...

"NOW WAIT JUST A MINUTE....HEYYYY TAKE YOUR HANDS OFF OF ME!!" yelled Lt. Tragg as three beefy Bailiffs grabbed him and walked him to the elevator and put him on it...

Down on the street,

Furious and as red as a beet...Lt. Tragg left and headed back into town.. He'd never know how very close he came to finding us...

He couldn't go to our homes and he knew we weren't in "our old office", which he still believed was our present  office.. He knew we weren't with Olivia and Beverly...He didn't know where we were.

He was at a loss as to where we were.

IV-

Yvette and Gary walked along the beach at the very edge, away from the Boardwalk and the amusements..  It was just the two of them..

"Gary, thank you for this...This was sooooo nice of you."said Yvette.

"Heyy anything for you ." he said.

"I believe you mean that." whispered Yvette.

"I do....I love you.."said Gary,

She gave him a slow soft kiss.

"I love you too." she whispered...
