The Federal Detention Center...

Our Para-Legal, Lee Phillips sat with our client Matthew Akes, who was being held in the Deportation Detention Center,

''Don't you worry...We are going to get you out of here."said Lee.

"I know this is uncomfortable for you...You need to go home, get some food, something to drink...I'm really into it now... I can be deported just for being accused of a major crime and not being a citizen.."said Matthew Akes.

"Don't lose hope...We are going to get you out....We are working on it right now..." said Lee.

And at this moment....

Aided by Brooke's husband, Sean Marks, a Federal Public Defender,

Ms. Yvette and I were arguing for Matthew Ake's release...stating that he has not been convicted of any crime as of yet and he deserves his day in court and that we were hard at work on his citizenship at this very minute.

We lucked out and got a Federal Judge who was sympathetic to our plight and who happened to be an Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority sister to Ms. Yvette..

She ordered Matthew Akes to be released...

And in one hour he was released....

Lee and Matthew were standing outside the detention center kissing passionately when Ms. Yvette and I arrived.

"Ohhhhhhhhhhhh I told you we were going to get you out." said Lee.

"You were right...Come here..." said Matthew..

He took her in his arms and kissed her passionately.....

And at Immigration Court..The rest of our team, Sofia, Kahlil and my wife, Beatrice were arguing for a continuance from a not too sympathetic judge, Michael Wilder.

He would hear no part of their argument and denied their request for a continuance, which meant they'd have to refile for a hearing all over again...Which they did promptly...

"Next time, have all of your ducks in a row before even filing." he said.

"Your Honor we had no idea.."argued Sofia.

"Forget it...It's no use...Let's just refile immediately and go."said her husband, Kahlil.

"Kahlil is right Sofia.Let's go." said Bee Bee,

She called Ms. Yvette...

"That was Bee Bee...The Judge wouldn't give them a continuance...Which means they have to refile again, Which they did...I prepared them for this eventuality..."said Yvette.

"Now what?" asked Matthew...

"Now you belong to me!!!" said Lt. Tragg, who arrived just in time to handcuff Matthew and take him back to jail...

"Hello Vettie...As usual, you did a good job in getting him away from the Feds...Heh Heh heh...I'll take it from here...Let's go Mr. Akes." he said..

As he placed him in his unmarked squad car and pulled off!

He had heard through the grapevine...That we had got a judge to release Matthew from ICE Custody.

"OUUUUUUUUUUU!" he gets under my skin." said a distraught Lee Phillips..

"He has a knack for doing that." said Yvette, hugging Lee..

"We got work to do." I said.

II-

A FEW HOURS LATER-COURTROOM B-

It was Tuesday....We had lucked up and gotten a Night Court hearing for Matthew.  Even he was surprised he was being arraigned so fast.

NIGHT COURT-

Matthew Ake was arrested in the morning, then Re-Arrested by Ice, We went to court, got a Judge to release him from federal custody, only for him to be re-arrested by Lt. Tragg and then arraigned all in the same day...It was a hell of a day...

In Philadelphia, Night Court only operates two nights a week....Tuesday and Thursday, Tonight was Tuesday...and fortunately...We got an arraignment date of 9:00 pm. 

The Judge in this case would not be the Judge in the actual case....

Lt. Tragg was not there... He was probably snuggled up with Judge Kelly Ann at her loft...Night court was too low profile for him anyway....No witnesses...No media..and a bunch of  Judges  and ADA's who were mostly older Judges and ADA's about to retire...It was lightweight. It was in session from 7:00 pm- 10:00 pm Tuesdays and Thursdays...We were quite fortunate to get a date.

Matthew surprisingly appeared in court with his lawyers...Most people were lucky to have one lawyer, usually a Public Defender..Matt was here with five lawyers, a para-legal and an investigator.  He was fortunate indeed.

 

 

The ADA that did show up was not going to be the ADA that tried the case...He had only the basic out line of the case at hand... He basically wanted to go home...So he didn't really put up much of a fight.

We presented 54 charactor witnesses .

We argued that Matthew Akes,  an Attorney himself , an officer of the court with no prior criminal record was not a flight risk and eagerly wanted his day in court to face these ridiculous and mistaken charges.

The Judge Agreed and released Matthew on his own recognizance...

No one was happier than Lee Phillips,

except maybe Matthew Akes...

They were kissing so passionately, you would have had to pry them a loose..

The courtroom had cleared and they were still kissing..

"WOW!  Look at those two." said Bee Bee giggling..

"They're not just seeing one another..They're in love." said Sofia.

"We gotta start workin on his criminal case." I said.

"And from the looks of it...It's pretty weak." said Kahlil.

"It's a Lieutenant Tragg case, what do you expect.?" laughed Jade.

"Wow! I only saw you guys at Breakfast yesterday...You had some day I heard." said Jazzy.
 

"They were in Federal Court, Immigration Court and then Night Court...What a day."laughed Dabnis,.

"They proved they were lawyers yesterday!"laughed Kayla.

"Yeah, three different courtrooms in a day...That's what a good team does..." laughed Ray.

"You should have called us Yvette, we would have helped you guys.." said Jessica.

"Yeah..."said her husband, Chip..

"You guys have enough on your plates... Anyway..Sean gave us a helping hand in Federal Court."said Yvette...

"It was my pleasure.. plus we had a good Judge...I love her." said Sean..

"Poor Things...Now you gotta work on his criminal defense.."said Karen.

"It's a Lt. Tragg, It's probably weak as hell." said her husband, B.L.

"That's their only saving grace."said Natalie.

"By the way, where is my man?" asked David.

"He's at my apartment asleep." said Lee..

"OUUUUUUUUU YOU PUT THAT THANG ON HIM DIDN'T YOU?" laughed Natalie.

Brooke laughed...

"Not to impose on Olivia.  But I think you should ask her and Beverly if the two of you can stay with them for awhile..They have a beautiful sub-basement..With a Shower , A nice big comfortable bed...and a 50 inch TV with cable and streaming and surround sound." said Brooke.

"Ask her... Because You guys are going to be sitting ducks for harrassment , not just from Lt. Tragg and the police, but from ICE....They aren't going to give up."said Natalie.

"They are both right....You 'd be better off at Olivia and Beverly's house.."said Sean.

"I don't think Olivia would refuse you...In fact...I'm going to call her and float the idea by her." said Zoey...

"You two need to get away for awhile..When you go home tonight pack an overnight bag...Both of you..

He should leave his car there..Take your car..They don't know you and he are an item.."said Lem...

"You all have such a loving network.." said Lee.

"We do! Saturday after Brunch, Everybody is coming over my house...I have a big basement.. We are going to have card games, Chess, Backgammon, Food and drink..."said Renee.

"It'll be a good time."said her husband,Tyrell.

"I could use a good time."sighed Lee.

"Yeah we all  could." laughed Paris.

"I'm sure Olivia and Beverly won't mind.."said 

Today at work was like operation warp speed.

In the conference room, Bee Bee, Sofia and Lee began doing research, Predicates, Laws pertaining to this particular case...Laws from like cases, Autopsy reports, Crime Scene photos...Crime scene reports.

"After this case...I want to go on a nice vacation."joked Bee Bee.

"Me too!"laughed Sofia.

''I can't vacation until I graduate from law school" said Lee.

"It'll come soon enough."said Virginia.

And in the next room, our media room, Kahlil and I were busy looking at the potential juror pool.

Studying their ages, how they vote, their education, their median income, their education.

"We need to get as many Black or people of color on this jury as possible."said Kahlil.

"Or at least young open minded people." I said.

" I earn my pay around here."laughed Jade, who did the investigating of the jury pool as well as the cases we had.

And in Yvette's Office-

"Good Ole Olivia, She always comes to the rescue."said Yvette, smiling..

"Liv and Bev already put clean sheets and pillow cases on the bed...

and I've already moved Matthew In..." said Nelson.

"And I'm here to take Lee back with me to pack her things..at the end of the day." said Josie...

"You can take her now...I'm sure she's exhausted.." said Yvette smiling..

That night..

Matthew and Lee had dinner at Olivia and Beverly's house, as did we all.

"Olivia...I am honored to meet you and I want to thank you for putting us up."said Matthew Akes.

"You can sleep in peace now....No worries from Lt. Tragg or ICE..." said Donnie Ray.

"Neither one of those guys have any idea you're here with us."said Beverly.

"So you can relax.." said Nelson.

"You've been through a lot Matthew in the past few days....Federal Custody, Arrested by Lt. Tragg, having your case in Immigration court post poned.."said Josie.

"Yeah, but you got good lawyers, you're going to be straight."said Paris.

"And you'll be safe and comfortable with us." said Bresha.

"Yeah..No harrassment." said Tony.

"Luckily, we'll all be here this week..No court cases."said Alfreda.

"Knock on wood."laughed her husband, Rockland.

 "Lee, you have your laptop with you....You can work remotely here...You don't have to come to the office for the time being." said Yvette.

"You guys are the best...Have you guys always been this close?" asked Lee.

"Since Law School...Vettie has been my day one ride or die."laughed Olivia.

"Liv is my sister..."said Yvette.

"That's why your two teams are like Mirror Images of each other... You both have taught me so much."said Lee.

"Yeah, you're learning from the very best." said Gary.

"We are almost ready to go to court.."I said.

"But not quite." said Bee Bee.

"You helped us a lot Lee, take a break tomorrow...You've earned it."said Sofia.

"Your law school studies never prepared you for this huh?" laughed Kahlil.

"No...I've really gotten an education...WOW!" laughed Lee.

"She is going to be a fine lawyer."said Matthew.

"Yes she is."said Jade.

"I hear you're a fine lawyer yourself at the Consulate ,arguing international cases..."said Danny.

Matthew Akes smiled and blushed.. "I'm okay." he said.

"If you're anything like your father, you're more than just okay....I worked a case with him years ago."said Virginia.

Jetty looked at his wife with pride and a tear in his eye...She was once a great lawyer herself.. And he knew she could be again.

We all were home and snug with our significant others..

Lee and Matthew were spending their first night together in Olivia and Beverly's sub-basement...

"I can't touch him until after the trial...but after the trial...regardless of the verdict..He's mine."said Lt. William Stryker.
