"Jumpshot Jim" had gone a bit of a leave of absence since his last big case...He had been back for a short while. He had won about 5 small cases... He asked for and got a bigger office...

Now he had a big case... The Murder case of Matthew Akes..An Immigrint accused of Murdering an American Citizen...The papers were playing this part of the story up..

Of course Matthew Akes was no real "Immigrant' ..Not really...He knew that...He was looking at the dossier on him..

He needed a Big Win and though he hated going up against this team...He realized...In order to be the best...You had to beat the best...

In our office across town, Matthew Akes was telling us his side of the story of the events of that night.

"This Guy, Gabriel Secane was supposedly an operative of the Department of Government Efficiency..He was hanging around the office for the past six or seven weeks just being a pain in the ass, asking questions about this one or that one and funneling information to places unknown. He asked me a lot of questions , personal questions about my salary, my family, my upbringing... I wouldn't answer any of his questions...He told me that it would be pertinent for me to answer his questions...I told him to get lost.

Next thing I know I'm getting a visit from ICE, asking to see a copy of my birth certificate... I told the man to get out...He left, but a group of them returned a week later with a legal summons...

I produced my birth certificate and explained that I'd been here in Philadelphia since i was six months old, had gone to Philadelphia Public schools, Lasalle College and had a law degree from Yale. That didn't seem to matter to these officials..

After that last visit from ICE , I was very upset and when I saw him..I accused him of snitching me out..

He said that I was going to be found out anyhow and that was it..I decked him... We fought..I tried to beat his brains out... I left him beat up, but alive...He was still standing when I left...I don't know who brained him with a blunt object, but he had a lot of enemies around there at the consulate...Nobody liked him.

I went home...I stopped by Lee's apartment... She put something cold on my eye...It was swollen...I stayed with her the rest of the night...at no time did I go back out. And that's the truth." said Matthew.

"DOGE is now saying that Gabriel Secane was not affliated with them, but that's neither here nor there. ICE is also disavowing knowing him...but that's what they do.. The point is..You didn't kill him."said Yvette.

"He came to my apartment, a little after eight and was with me the whole night Ms. Yvette...I'll testify to that."said Lee.

"The time of death is said to be a little after 9:00 pm. We have a credit card receipt from the gas station that shows he filled his car up at 8: 45 pm... The Gas station is about a mile away...He couldn't have been there." I said.

"The two eyewitnesses witnessed the fist fight, but they left after that...and they both said, that Matt left with them and that Gabriel was still alive, bloody and cursing at him from the doorway..Threatening to have him arrested." said Bee Bee.

"That proves he was alive after the fight..There is no proof that Matthew returned.. He was with Lee the rest of the night.Why is Lt. Tragg pushing this?" asked Sofia.

"Because he's a butthead that's why."said Kahlil.

"He has a one track mind..He gets on something and he won't let go. You can't tell him anything."said Jade.

"Virginia, that brief you wrote was no short of brilliant...I took Lee with me and we presented it to a Federal District Court Judge...We got a restraining order against Lrt. William Stryker.. He can't approach or question Matthew until after his trial... And before the end of his trial,I'm going to go for another restrainiung order.Thank You." said Yvette.

"It was the least I could do...I hate those ICE guys." said Virginia.

"Jumpshot Jimmy will be prosecuting.." said Yvette.

Lee laughed. "Jumpshot Jimmy", is that really his name?" laughed Lee.

"Real name, James Taylor, Assistant District Attorney James Taylor.. He played Basketball in college...He was a small forward. He was pretty good until he tore his ACL , his senior year, right before the Sweet Sixteen.

After that..He finished college and went to law school...He earned the nickname "Jumpshot Jim."I explained.

"He's young, handsome and considers himself somewhat of a lady's man...but he's a reasonably good attorney." said Bee Bee.

"Like Lt. Tragg, he'd much rather have a splashy TV career, a talk show, a Podcast maybe even a movie.. He's a fixture in the city's tabloids."said Sofia.

"Ohhhhha Pseudo Celebrity Eh?" laughed Lee.

"Exactly!" I said.

"Our team, Olivia and Beverly's team and Natalie's husband, David Charles have kept him from any of his outside goals..We've all beaten him in big cases...He needs to win a big case...This won't be one of them." said Kahlil.

"Who will be the Judge?" asked Jade.

"I don't know as yet..." said Yvette.

II-

''Why are you staring a me? What are you doing up here? I just came up here to explore the gym and spa this building has." said Lee.

"You're so beautiful....Everything about you.." said Matthew.

''AWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW!" said Lee

He took her in his arms and began to kiss her.....

"UMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM!" she moaned.

"OHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!" he moaned..

"We'd better head on downstairs to lunch." she said.

"Okay, just one more kiss." he said.

"OUUUUUUUUUUUUU OKAY!" she said.

And she kissed him one last time.

In the Cafeteria,.

''Where's my girl?" asked Jazzy...

"They'll be down...They went to look at the Spa and the Gym." said Yvette.

"Oh they did huh?" laughed Dabnis.

"Get your mind out of the gutter Dabnis."laughed Kayla.

"Oh yeah? What did we do the last time we checked out the gym and the Spa?" asked her husband Ray..

"RAYYYY!" said Kayla, embarrassed..

"Here they come now." said a smiling Jessica.

Lee and Matthew walked down to the cafeteria hand in hand...

Matthew had Lee's lipstick smudge on his lapel and the side of his face.

Chip, Jessica's husband passed him an antiseptic wipe ...

And Karen wiped Lee's lipstick off of his face.

"Heyyy Freshie.."laughed Natalie.

Lee smiled wickedly...

Natalie's husband, David Charles had her lipstick on his lapel and the side of his face..

Brooke took an antiseptic wipe and wiped the lipstick of her best friend, Natalie off of David's face.

her husband, Sean smiled.

"It's so nice that Olivia and Beverly have put up those two...They are so cute." said Zoey...

"Yes they are...and it was nice. We all still on for Saturday Renee?" asked Lem.

''Sure am...I can't wait to host you all."said Renee.

"Nice to have a huge basement that can house everybody."said her husband, Tyrell.

"Yeah that is a nice basement you guys have, A 75 inch TV screen....Lots of space to et and relax..."said Paris.

"Yeah, you gotta love it." said Tony.

Lee and Matthew sat together, holding hands....As we talked,.They appeared oblivious to it all.

"I have to remember to call Nina Rios and Carlos , tell them to stop by."said Ms. Yvette.

''We got a trial date set for next week, Courtroom D." I said.

"Guess what? I heard from Immigration Court...We got a new hearing date set for next Friday."said Bee Bee.

"Hopefully we can get a continuance on that date...We'll be deep into the trial by then, but maybe we can swing it." said Sofia.

"Hopefully we get Kelly Ann or Julie Wong." said Kahlil.

"We've got to cross our fingers." said Jade.

"I hate to have to depend on what Judge you get....What if you get a butthead? Then you're back in the jackpot." said Virginia.

"I wish I could be the Judge on this case."said Jetty.

"I wish so too Jetty." said Yvette.

III-

We were in court the next day for a preliminary hearing before the trial.

We met the Judge. Judge Michael King. He was tough but reasonably fair.

He gave us instructions for the trial on Monday and dismissed us.He also granted us a one day continuance for Matthew's citizenship hearing.

"Everything broke our way for a change."said Ms. Yvette.

"Yes, now for Matthew to have his hearing and take his test....All in one day."said Lee.

"I'm so glad I don't have to take that test...I was born here and I don't know the answers to some of those questions."I laughed.

"You should have been paying attention in class instead of looking at the girls."joked my wife, Bee Bee.

"Yeah..." agreed Sofia.

"I hear you homeslice...Still I'm glad I was born here too!"laughed Kahlil.

Jade laughed at our banter.

As we were leaving we ran into Lt. William Stryker.

"Sooooooo you're the damned lawyers eh?" he said. "That was nice how you got Akes off...And even nicer how you got a restraining order against me... I'm an Attorney too and I'm repealing that restraining order." he said.

"You're welcome to do whatever you feel, but you're not going to block his trial which starts Monday..or his Citizenship hearing next Friday.." said Ms. Yvette.

Lee glared at him angrilly...

"We are prepared for any eventuality." I said.

"Oh is that right?" he said.

"That's right...So any move you make, we are prepared with a counter move... "said Bee Bee.

"We've got two federal judges on speed dial." said Sofia.

"So do what you will, we'll be ready." said Kahlil.

Jade smiled snarkily.......

"It's Game on.." said William Stryker.

"I suppose it is." said Ms. Yvette as we all walked away.

At Olivia and Beverly's house, Matthew was having lunch with them..

"You guys are the absolute best.." said Matthew.

''Why thank you...You've been an excellent guest,"said Olivia, smiling.

'We are all rooting for you next week in both your trial and your citizenship hearing."said Donnie Ray

"You'll be just fine...by the time your trial ends..You'll be an American Citizen."said Beverly, smiling.

''And nobody, not ICE, not the cops will be able to touch you." said Nelson.

''Somebody's at the door." said Josie.

"It's Ms. Yvette, Keith, Bee Bee, Sofia ,Kahlil and Ms. Jade." said Bresha.

"I'll get it..... Come on up Vettie." said Alfreda.

"Hey Liv, Bev, Donnie Ray, Guys..We had a preliminary court hearing today...Trial begins on Monday..

We got the continuance for Matthew's citizenship hearing and test...so I closed my office for the day."

"Nice way to end a Friday...At Noon."laughed Virginia.

"Hey Baby!" said Lee to Matthew.

"Hey Love!" said Matthew..

They kissed....

"I'm happy for you....You guys have really earned your keep this week."laughed Olivia.

"That's what I say...We should uh get a bonus." I joked.

"Stoppppppppp!"laughed Bee Bee.

Sofia laughed too!

"So uh what's for lunch?" said Kahlil.

"Kahlil."laughed Jade.

''We've got some Cole Slaw Left and Some Creamy Pasta....All of the sandwiches are gone."said Beverly.

"That's alright Bev...Kahlil is kidding...We are all going to take a walk down to the sandwich shoppe."said Bee Bee.

SATURDAY AFTERNOON-

"Welcome everybody.....Welcome!" said Renee...

"This is sooo nice...Renee ,Tyrell, your home is beautiful." said Lee.

"Oh wowwwww this is nice." said Matthew.

"Thank you..."said Renee..

"Just head down to the basement...That's where everyone else is.." said Tyrell.

''Heyyyy you two...Welcome ..Welcome..." said Yvette...

"Heyy Guys." said Yvette's Husband, Gary.

"Glad you two could make it." I said.

''We are only across the street" joked Lee..

Bee Bee laughed and hugged Lee..

"I'm glad you're here." she said.

"Me too!" said Sofia, hugging her.

"Heyyy Matt, Next week is a big week for you."said Kahlil.

"I'll be ready! I'm ready to get my life back man." said Matthew.

"I know how you feel believe me."said Jade.

"I wish Lt. Tragg would dig deeper into these cases before he makes a snap decision and just arrests someone."said Danny Ho.

"That would be too much like doing the right thing." said Virginia.

"Yeah, I know right?" said Jetty..

'Welcome to our little get together....Do you play cards?" asked Olivia.

"I don't play any cards." said Matthew.

"I play spades."said Lee.

"Oh you're in good company!"said Donnie Ray smiling..

"Yessssss come on over here...You too Matt, you can learn something."said a smiling Beverly...

"Oh this is perfect." said Nelson.

"Cop a squat..."said a smiling Josie..

"The Food is coming."said Paris..

"I knew you'd spot that !"laughed Bresha.

Her husband, Tony laughed.. "I spotted it too." he said.

Alfreda and her husband Rockland brought the pans in..

and placed them on a table.

Barbecued Buffalo Chicken platters.

"You know we are living in the same apartment complex you guys live in...We are a floor above you guys now." said Carlos.

"Yes." said Matthew.

"We are all just one big happy family now." said Jazzy.

"Yup...Neighbors." said Dabnis.

"I can't wait until this summer when we return to their building for our rooftop party."said Kayla.

"It has been awhile." said Ray.

''Yes..it has been." said Jessica.

"When Keith, Bee Bee, Sofia and Kahlil moved out, we didn't have any contacts there."said Chip.

"And Virginia didn't stay long enough." said Karen.

''Well we have representation now." said B.L.

''Wow We weren't around here yet..We missed out."said Natalie.

"I know...I can't wait until the summer." said David.

"I can't wait until we all go to the beach." said Brooke.

"Me neither." said Sean.

''It'll be so much more fun."said Zoey.

"Yes, it will be." said Lem.

Renee and Tyrell set up the tables for Card Games , Backgammon and Chess.

"Let the games begin everybody." said Tyrell.

There was food, fellowship, fun and games....

"These past two weeks have been so relaxing...Staying with Olivia and Beverly and you....and relaxing at events like this...I'm ready for my trial." said Matthew.

"It's been relaxing for me too!"said Lee, hugging him.

Everyone had a great time at Renee and Tyrell's house...

Now, everyone was at home, snug in their houses with their significant others..

and likewise.. Matthew and Lee were in the sub-basement at Olivia and Beverly's house.

Matthew watched Lee get undressed.... He smiled at her..

"You know...I never wanted to be indicted for murder...I mean who would? And My Citizenship hearing got postponed...but I got to stay with you....I got to know you intimately...like this...This is a kind of blessing and I almost hate that this may be coming to an end.

"You live down the hall from me...It's not ending..You'll be seeing me everyday..." said Lee.

"Where will you be interning next?" asked Matthew.

"I'll be working with Karen Page, Natalie and David Charles and Brooke Marks of Wrongful Conviction/Conviction Integrity, then Jessica and Chip with the Innocence Project, Then Jazzy's group and then her husband, Dabnis's group and that's it...Two weeks left and then I graduate from law school." said Lee.

"Same Building...I can visit you there."said Matthew...

"AWWWWWWWWWWW...You really want to be with me..." she said, smiling..

"I thought you knew...All day...Every hour." said Matthew...

Lee sat on his lap....

"You and me has happened so fast....It's got my head spinning...but it's happened.. We have fallen in ,love." she said.
