The Blue Versa

PRELUDE-

Natalie had just finished signing the papers at the dealership....The Car , a Blue 2023 Nissan Versa was now hers....She had sold her previous car and then paid the balance for her new car......

Natalie was smiling from ear to ear..

"Well guys...What do you think?" she said....

"It's beautiful Natalie...So Happy for you." said her best friend, Brooke...

''What do you think Lover?" she said to me..

"That means we will now be going to the same dealership when it's time for inspection." joked Brooke's husband, Sean...

They had driven us down here...We'd be driving back.....

"I love it!!!!" said Natalie...

"Let's go for a spin."said Sean....

"Yeah, come on.." I said.

"Okay...Everybody hop in.." said Natalie..

Natalie took us all for a spin around the city.....

"Ouuu this car drives smooth!" I said..

''Natalie, you handle the road so well.."said Sean..

"Who taught you how to drive Nat?  My father taught me...He yelled a lot, but eventually, I got the hang of it and passed on my second try...I was afraid to fail, afraid he wouldn't take me out again.."laughed Brooke..

''Same here..My dad took me out and he yelled a lot too and I failed my first time...He all but told me that I wasn't meant to drive...

"It was Beverly's Father , Jimmy West, who taught me how to drive.." said Natalie..

Jazzy got her license first of the four of us...She had her license a whole year before the rest of us..She had it at the beginning of 11th Grade...She had gotten it that summer...Several of the young boys in the neighborhood taught her how to drive...Naturally they wanted to get in her panties...Jazzy didn't give them the time of day as far as that was concerned.....but she learned enough to pass her test the summer in between 10th and 11th Grade.

I rode to the DMV with Jimmy , when he took his daughter Beverly and her cousin Kayla to take their drivers tests..

Beverly's Father asked me if I had my license...I told him that I did not...

He asked me why I didn't have my license... I told him I had taken the test and failed and my father had more or less given up on me, said I wasn't meant to drive.

He and Beverly' s young aunt Olivia, his younger sister said that that was nonsense..

"Jimmy can teach you....He taught me and it took me two trys too , but I got it.."said Olivia.. She wasn't the  Attorney she is today..She was just one of the girls then...but she was sooo kind and so sweet..She was like my auntie...or cool big sister  I wished I had... I so envied both Beverly and Kayla, having her in their lives...

''Anyway, Jimmy took me out every day, after school for two hours and for four hours on weekends...He was patient and  soft spoken and always took me to Sam Mother's for a Milk shake after each lesson.. My dad thought he was trying to make a play for me, but he wasn't.....Beverly's Mother, his then girlfriend,

Ms. Alfreda took me out a few times too...She too was patient and kind and soft spoken...More patient than my dad had been....He was jealous that these "Strangers" My friend's father and mother had taken more of an interest in me driving than he had...

I went to take my drivers test the second time and passed with flying colors....Jimmy was patient and didn't yell...but repetitious...He made you do the same old thing over and over and over until it was second nature...I got it...Which explained why his Little Sister, His daughter and his cousin were such good drivers... My dad grudgingly thanked Jimmy for helping me get my drivers license , saying "You're a better man than me.." Actually he was!" said Natalie.

"So anyway, by the start of Senior year at Girls High, Beverly  Kayla and I all had our drivers license's.and no car."laughed Natalie at the memory.

''Wow! You really have quite a history with them don't you?" I said.

''Really...You all are like family.."said Brooke.

"They're more my family than my actual family..."said Natalie.. "I'm so glad I hooked back up with them..."said Natalie...

We dropped them off at their car

And we headed home in Natalie's new ride...

As she drove home, I rubbed her shapely legs and allowed my fingers to drift under her skirt..

Natalie giggled and looked at me playfully...

"David you're fresh....I'm gonna start calling you "Handsy Hank." you're as bad as Lt. Tragg almost..." she said.

"I've heard he has accidentally ripped some panties off of a couple of women....ADA's..." I laughed..

"I've heard that too! He is a menace. At least you haven't ripped my panties yet..." laughed Natalie..

She pulled up to the corner...

"Wanna Drive?" she asked.

"Heyy don't mind if I do." I said.  I got out and we switched seats...

"Ouuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu, you are welcome." she said as we switched seats and I took over the car.

 We drove through the streets on a quiet Saturday Night...

MONDAY MORNING!

"Good morning everyone.... Heard you got a new car Natalie.."said Karen Page, our supervisor in the Wrongful Conviction/Conviction Integrity Unit..

"I did...I took a photo of it." said Natalie..

"It matches her dress today." I said.

"It's a beauty." said Brooke..

"That's wonderful...We've got a new case guys....Let's go to our conference room..."said Karen.

In our conference room was our former colleagues from the Public Defender's Office and now building mates from the Innocence Project, Jessica Sanchez-Burrows and her husband, Charles "Chip" Burrows..

"This is our client, Mellisa "Missy" Leonard." said Chip.

"HEYYY I KNOW HER!! Or rather , I knew her!" said Natalie...

I smiled....

"You do?" asked Karen...

"She does" said Brooke, shaking her head..

"That's Missy....She lived a few doors down from me...In The 59th Street Projects...She had three children....They should all be grown now!   I remember when she went to jail for supposedly killing one...Nobody believed that..but she was under a lot of stress..."said Natalie..

''She got pregnant at 16 with the first child...The Father of that baby was shot and killed during a drug deal gone bad a year later.Her mother helped her raise that child until she graduated from High School..She met and fell in Love with Odell McCandles shortly after graduation when they both were working for Verizon and she got pregnant with his baby, they were supposed to get married and then Odell revealed that he had another neighborhood girl pregnant...He moved in with her... Mellissa took it very hard...She took on a second job to take on the second child... Odell McCandles got a third woman pregnant in the meanwhile..."explained Jessica.

"I knew him...His Old trifling ass tried to make a play for me once." said Natalie..

"Well at least he had good tastes " I joked.

Brooke and I looked at each other and smiled.. She and I came from the same background...We were both poor neighborhood kids who had somehow risen above our circumstances of birth and economic standing and become attorneys.".had made something out of ourselves." We totally understood Natalie's background...It was like our own .

So was Jessica who continued... " By the time both of her children were in grade school...Mellisa's affair with a married sanitation worker led to the birth of a third child....Her mother didn't have room in her house for yet another child ,so Mellissa was forced to move into a small housing unit in another neighborhood with her three children. It was here that her two year old daughter toppled down the stairs and suffered a fatal head injury...She died two days later.. Mellisa was devestated...A Newsy neighbor complained to DHS that she feared Mellissa may have pushed the child down the steps and the story was live...She was soon charged with First Degree Murder and hysteria was raised...An Ambitious Homicide Detective named Arnold Stang made it his personal mission to "bring her to justice" He was the forerunner to Lt. Tragg... He got all of the press and praise....and an equally ambitious Assistant District Attorney, Raphael Malph prosecuted the case...It led to a conviction and a Death Sentence.."said Jessica.

"The thing is....Nobody checked on her mental health, her history, her diagnosis of extreme anxiety...nothing.. The Public Defender fought hard to get these things included during the trial, but she failed and the jury, like most of Philadelphia, poisoned by the bad publicity quickly convicted her of a crime that might not have even happened... She was interrogated 100 times and more hours than she legally should have and she never wavered...She has always maintained her innocence." said Charles "Chip"Burrows, Jessica's husband and a one time fellow Public Defender with the three of us...

"Her Death Sentence has been overturned...She's been removed from Dollie Madison Prison and transferred to a special unit in Valhalla Correctional Facility for women right here in our fair city.

One in three women are wrongly convicted of harming their children  , 70 percent were charged with

crimes that never happened at all...Like this one.. The Innocence Project has taken this on...and it's right up our ally....I want you three to go to Valhalla tomorrow and talk to her.. Take some food...Natalie since you know her, that will be perfect."said Karen.

"Chip and I will go with you...Is there room for us in your new car?" laughed Jessica.

Natalie smiled..

''Sure it is..."she said.

''When was the last time you saw her Nat?" asked Brooke.

"Oh I was young, still in High School when she moved away and was pregnant with the third baby....and in my freshmen year at Temple when she went on trial for murder..I forgot about her after all these years....."sighed Natalie..  "I've forgotten a lot about my past.." she said.

I put my arms around her... "Whatever happened to Detective Arnold Stang ?" I asked.

"Oh I can tell you that" said Karen...

"Detective Arnold Stang moved up through the ranks, Sergeant, Lieutenant and Captain....He put himself though law school at night and graduated..He passed the bar and left the police department for a splashy career as an attorney....

He worked for a very reputable law firm..and was quite successful for many years....Two years ago he was disbarred in the State of Pennsylvania...and faced reciprocal disbarment in New Jersey, Deleware, New York and Washington D.C.  Stang had transferred a large portion of his client, Michelle Dubois's assets into his own accounts. The stock, worth about $5.9 million, was supposed to be included in the forfeiture of assets that DuBois made as part of a plea bargain. It had been held by Stang because it would be sold immediately if it came into government possession, but it was expected to rise dramatically in value. Arnold Stang later refused to turn it over, saying that it was payment of his legal fees and not part of DuBois asset forfeiture. In addition, Arnold Stang said that the stock was collateral for loans that he had received, and so could not be sold until the loans were repaid. These arguments were rejected by the court; the stock rose in value to about $20 million, and Arnold Stang then argued that, if he turned over the stock so that it could be sold, he was entitled to keep the difference between what it was valued at when he received it and its new, higher price. Nobody bought that!

 After Arnold Stang was imprisoned for six weeks in 2020 for contempt of court, his brother raised the money that enabled Stang to turn the stock over to the government, and he was released. He was later found guilty of seven counts of attorney misconduct by the Pennsylvania Supreme Court, and in 2021 he was disbarred. New Jersey, Deleware, New York and Washington D.C. disbarred Bailey one year later.

He currently lives here in Philadelphia...He's working for a consulting firm... He's a very bitter man.."she explained...

"WOWWWWWWWWWWWW!" said Brooke.

"MANNN DISBARRRED!" I said.

''He was a dirty dog as a cop! and an even dirtier attorney..I don't feel sorry for him."said Natalie.

"I can understand that......WOWWWWWW!" said Chip..

"What About the other one...Raphael Malph?" asked Jessica.

''Welllll....You guys were still in high school....Me, Olivia and Yvette were attending PENN LAW SCHOOL...

Raphael Malph lectured us at PENN....He ran unsuccessfully for District Attorney several times.....He also ran unsuccessfully for States Attorney...Finally after losing the last time..He left Philadelphia for parts unknown...

He's back in town, and still practicing law as far as I know." said Karen.

"I've heard of him...He's presently running for State Senator" I said.

''Oh Really? He's determined to run for political office isn't he?, but neither one of them is important, they wont be involved in this case at all.....You guys go up to Valhalla tomorrow to see our new client." said Karen..

"Okay...We're on it!"said Natalie.

"Yupper." said Brooke.

III-

That night after work...

Natalie drove me to the Lovers Lane...The Lover's Lane where the bones of two long missing people were found and where another murder victim was found sometime later..

''You've heard about what has happened here haven't you?" I asked.

'' Beverly told me about her and Nelson's two times here...but I don't think we have anything to worry about...There's nobody around for miles... It's just you and me..."said Natalie..

She leaned over and kissed me slowly and softly.. I forgot about any misgivings I had about this place..

I ran my hands up under Natalie's dress... I rubbed her legs and slowly slipped  her panties to the side..

We were at Cakeman Raven's Bakery.

"I want to make sure there is plenty of coffee..." said Brooke 

as she filled two Thermos bottles.

"Ummm Nice Hot Bagels and Doughnuts, fresh out of the oven....Ouuuuuuuu I love the smell.."said Natalie..

"I do too!" I said..

I put a tray of pastries in the trunk on top of the doughnuts and bagels...

"Olivia and Beverly and Ms. Yvette all come here and stock up when they are going to visit a prisoner...It is a good idea.. It puts them at ease..." said Jessica.

"It certainly puts me at ease...."joked her husband...Chip....

I liked the five of us working together....We had never worked a case together when we all worked at the Public Defender's Office....but we knew each other and were cordial...We sometimes ate lunch together...Now we hung out together and worked cases together...I loved it!

We piled into Natalie's new car..

"Wanna Drive Brookie?" said Natalie, tossing her the keys..

"Awwwww thank you baby!" said Brooke, hugging Natalie..

and we all piled in and headed for Valhalla.

and a fresh new case!
