SAM MOTHER'S DINER- Trial Day

Sam Mother was happy...He hadn't seen a lot of us in a long time..We usually didn't stop in here before a trial...but since the trial didn't start until ten o'clock we decided to have breakfast..... There was a lot of us today...

Yvette was happy she got to have breakfast with her husband, Gary. Jade was equally happy..She got to have breakfast with her husband, Danny..

Alexa and her boyfriend, Daniel were happy because they were having breakfast with their favorite people, Yvette, Myself, Bee Bee, Sofia ,Kahlil, Jade and Olivia, Donnie Ray, Beverly, Nelson, Josie and Bresha.. They had come to watch us in court this week..

"WOW! This is nice...All of us attorneys eating breakfast here." said our client, Johnny Graham

"This is soo nice..I usually only get to have breakfast with you on the weekend.." said Yvette to her husband, Gary.

"I know...I love this...I wish I could watch you at work in the courtroom."said Gary.

''Remember when we were in law school, we used to have breakfast here ?" I asked Bee Bee.

"Yeah those were lean days... I remember when we had to chip in our finances so that the four of us could eat."said Bee Bee wistfully.

''Yeah, I remember those days." sighed Sofia.

"Me too! Now look at us... No more scrimping and chipping in...We can buy whatever we like."said Kahlil.

"It's nice eating breakfast with you...We usually only eat breakfast on the weekends."said Jade to her husband, Danny.

"I know ....This is nice."said Danny....

"Ouuuuuu I love this.." said Alexa.

"I know you are in seventh heaven....Surrounded by your absolute favorite people." laughed Daniel

Bristol.

"I am... I ammmmmmm!" gushed Alexa.

"WOW! It's been awhile since we all had breakfast at Sam Mother's Diner." said Olivia.

"This is like Old Homes Week." Donnie Ray laughed.

"Yeah it is....I remember law school, Me, Kayla and Jazzy eating here, chipping in our money so that all three of could eat and then at the Public Defenders Office...Me, Jazzy and you Nelson."said Beverly.

"I remember Olivia lending me money to eat my first week in the Public Defender's Office and telling me that I didn't have to pay her back...Just to manage my money better when I started getting my first paychecks." said Nelson, hugging Olivia.

"You and my niece and Jazzy were my children...I couldn't let yall starve.."laughed Olivia, remembering.

"We all had quite a history with this place..didn't we?" said Josie.

"Yes we did.."said Bresha.

Lt. Tragg walked in... He was surprised to see all of his "Favorite " people in the restaurant.

"WELLLLLLLLLLLL LOOK AT THIS...THE DIRTBAG AND ALL OF HIS ATTORNEYS IN THE RESTAURANT!" said Lt. Tragg.

"HIGH PRAISE FROM THE DUMBEST COP ON THE BEAT!" said Johnny Graham...

"WHYYYYY YOUUUUUUUU!" snarled an angry Lt. Tragg...

"ENOUGH! Let the court decide on our client's innocence or guilt." said Yvette, coming in between them.

"Olivia, what are you and your people doing here?" asked Lt. Tragg.

"Oh we are here to observe justice in action." said Olivia with a smile.

"Hmmmph!" said Lt. Tragg.

COURTROOM B-

"ALL RISE FOR THE HONORABLE JUDGE JULIE WONG! DOCKET 504 , COMMONWEALTH OF PENNSYLVANIA VS. JOHN ROBERT GRAHAM ON THE CHARGE OF MURDER IN THE FIRST DEGREE OF BRIANNA RICH." said the Bailiff...

"Be seated...Good Morning, Good Morning Attorneys and Prospective Jurors...I am Judge Julie Wong...Welcome to my courtroom....Due to courtroom crowding of cases , we are going to bypass a preliminary hearing...We know that a crime, a heinous crime has been committed so we are going to go straight to trial.. We will have Jury selection today...So Tomorrow, we will begin with trial." said Judge Wong. "We will start today with introductions.." she said.

"Representing the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, Assistant District Attorney Adam Carpenter your honor.

Assistant District Attorney Gregory Mitchell decided that he didn't want to endure a case that Lt. Tragg

had any part of... He knew of Lt. Tragg's penchant for not investigating enough...For not recanvassing a crime scene, not reading Autopsy Reports fully and not looking at other possibilities...

He also knew that Lt. Tragg had a very personal dislike for the defendant who had bested him in court and had criticized him brutally in TV interviews after he got an acquittal...He wanted no part of that, So he go his young protoge...Adam Carpenter to take up the case.

"Yvette Jones-Lockwood, Lead Attorney for the Defense your honor.." said Yvette.

"Keith Jones, Attorney for the Defense your honor." I said,.

"Beatrice Evans-Jones, Attorney for the Defense." said Bee Bee.

"Sofia Garcia-Ahmed , Attorney for the Defense your honor." said Sofia.

"Kahlil Ahmed, Attorney for the Defense your honor." said Kahlil.

Jade sat quietly with our client, Attorney Johnny Graham.

The seriousness of this case finally came down on Johnny Graham... Losing this case, a conviction would almost certainly lead to his disbarment and a possible Death Sentence.

ADA Carpenter when asked about whether he was seeking the Death Penalty would only say... "It's not off the table."

"Outstanding.... Now we will have Juror selection." said Judge Wong.

Adam Carpenter was a young Assistant District Attorney....He was a year behind, Bee Bee, Sofia, Kahlil and I at PENN LAW...We remembered him...He thought he was hot stuff...He was ruthless in his approach to almost everything.

Kahlil and I wanted to show him he wasn't as smart as he thought...

With Bee Bee and Sofia on their laptops ,sitting behind us and whispering information to us...We gave Adam Carpenter a lesson in Voir Dire...

We got a 10-2 victory over him, including the Jury Foreperson.... It was a tremendous victory for us...

"Okayyyy we have a jury.....Trial will begin tomorrow at 9:00 am. Attorneys and Jurors are reminded to be on time and be ready for trial...Court is adjourned." she said.

An extremely rainy night in the city....

We were all happy to be in our warm homes after a days work.

And at Ms. Yvette's house...

"It''s nice to be home, all warm and cozy in our homes." Ms. Yvette whispered , looking at her husband..

The trial began on time and Adam Carpenter weaved his story... He castigated Johnny Graham for sleeping with his partner's wife...

He brought Private Investigator , Bert Vandenberg who stated he'd been hired by Partner, Jerome Rich to follow his wife Brianna, whose husband, Jerome Rich felt she was cheating.. He showed the jury lurid photos of Johnny Graham and Brianna Rich in a Hotel Room and in a Motel Room...He had records of phone conversations between the two....

He had a photo of the house where the murder occurred

and Johnny Graham leaving the house at 7:00 am

Yvette, Bee Bee and Sofia destroyed his witnesses, comparing statements they made to the police and statements they were making now....

They spoke to CSI people and Medical Examiners who placed the time of death at 7:00 am. while showing the Street Cam photo of Johnny Graham's car leaving at 6:54 am...

and thus saying Brianna was still alive at the time he left...and arguing if she was still alive when he left,he couldn't have killed her.

Adam Carpenter argued that this was all speculation...

Kahlil and I showed a photo, taken the same morning of Jerome Rich's car parked across the street at the same time. The Street Cam photo showed that the car arrived three hours before and sat there all night and all morning.

It was missed we said because everyone was looking at Johnny Graham's car...

Adam Carpenter looked at Lt. Tragg....

"Did you know about this? " he asked.

Lt. Tragg looked like he'd swallowed a canary... Suddenly his slam dunk murder case appeared to have cracks in it.

Yvette showed the jury photos of the Nissan Rogue belonging to Jerome Rich entering the motel miles away and leaving..

"I have photos of Jerome Rich parking his car, a 2025 Nissan Rogue, White...The same car that was parked outside of his house on the morning of the murder when he was supposed to be miles away in the motel...I have him exiting the car and letting himself in the house...The car is a match, same license plate number and all.. Lt. Tragg and his boys missed this because they were so busy looking at Johnny Graham's car..."said Yvette, showing the jury Street Cam Videos and photos.

Adam Carpenter was flabbergasted... He was caught by surprise more times in this case than he had wanted... He really didn't like being out lawyered by four of his former classmates and their boss.

He glared angrilly at Lt. Tragg.

Lt. Tragg looked like he had swallowed a canary.....

Johnny Graham sat back and laughed his head off....He could see how the case was going against ADA Carpenter and fast...

The Next Day...We began our defense...

Yvette called Jerome Rich to the stand...

He had already heard and seen the evidence already presented against him...He more or less knew he was cooked.

"Jerome, How did you and Johnny meet?" asked Yvette.

He was surprised at the question.

"We met at Law School, Georgetown....We weren't room-mates, We lived across the hall from each other. We uh had classes together....So we used to study together..." he said.

''And you two graduated from law school together."said Yvette.

''No he graduated first....I was there for another semester before I graduated and took the Bar..

Johnny was back in Philly...We didn't see each other for a few years...I stayed in D.C. and clerked for a Judge there and worked for a small law firm....Johnny was a Public Defender, He taught law at U. Of Penn, and when I returned to Philly and we hooked up again, He was running the Public Defender's Office. We got together over drinks and decided to start a partnership...We got an office, hired a Para-legal and an office manager and started rolling."said Jerome who was surprised at Yvette's questions..

"How did Brianna come into the equation?" asked Yvette.

"We both met her at a bar called Josie's... We both tried talking to her... I got the better end of the conversations and soon she became my girlfriend...and eventually my wife." said Jerome Rich.

"Is Brianna what came between you two/" asked Yvette gently...

''She was only one thing..We just were beginning to grow apart... I asked him several times to buy me out..and he was taking his time making a decision....Around this time I suspected my wife was stepping out on me....So I hired a Private Investigator, Mr. Vandenberg...and found out my partner was sleeping with my wife.." said Jerome.

''And that was the straw that broke the camel's back..That's when you decided to take action."said Yvette softly.

Jerome smiled... "That was nice, Nice the way you did this....I'm going to refuse to answer that question on the grounds it may incriminate me..hah hah hah...Nice." he said.

"Smart man....I wouldn't answer it either! The Defense rests." said Yvette...

"Alright Jurors remember talk only amongst yourselves about this case.... I will see you all tomorrow morning ....Cour is adjourned." said Judge Wong.

"Vettie you were brilliant... I loved it!" said Olivia, hugging her best friend.

"Awwwww thank you girlfriend!" said Yvette...

"I really enjoyed watching you guys these past few days." said Donnie Ray.

"You guys were so good...You were like surgeons the way you took the prosecutions case apart." said Beverly.

"That was our plan...just present cold hard facts that couldn't be argued or disputed." said Bee Bee.

"You see he didn't have that many objections...We prepared for that." said Sofia.

"Brilliant...You guys were ice cold..."said Nelson.

"And Ms. Yvette, she was incredible..Dude thought she was going to tear into him and she didn't..."I said.

''She brought him along and gave the jury our story without beating him over the head." said Kahlil.

"I loved it! You guys made your case during the prosecution... He looked surprised every time

you guys came up with a point..."said Josie.

" He was so outclassed.."said Bresha.

"We Went to Law School with him." said Bee Bee.

"He was always so smug, so self assured..."said Sofia.

"Yeah always thought he was smart.." said Kahlil.

''He was a year behind us." I said.

"Let's get out of here and grab a few cold ones." said Yvette.

"Drinks are on me tonight guys." said Johnny Graham.

Jerome Rich quietly slipped out of the courtroom....He wasn't coming back for the verdict...He knew what it was going to be..Not Guilty...He respected the way Yvette and her young attorneys had handled the trial...He thought they were brilliant and he could see why his former partner had teamed up with them for the Lauren Houser defense and why he called them to defend him...They were brilliant.. He had nothing but respect for them, especially Yvette.

COURTROOM B- NEXT MORNING 9:45 am

"ALL RISE FOR THE HONORABLE JULIE WONG!" said the Bailiff.

We all stood up...

"Be seated ....Has the Jury come to a decision?" asked Judge Julie Wong.

"We have your honor." said the Jury Foreman....She passed the envelope to the Bailiff , who passed it to Judge Wong.

Judge Wong read it.. Her Face betrayed no emotions...She passed it to the bailiff.

"Read it!" she said.

"Will The Defendant and his lawyers stand up!" said the Bailiff.

We all stood up.

Yvette looked super confident...

So Did Johnny Graham...

I was always nervous at these things.....

Bee Bee sensed my mood and she held my hand....

Sofia was nervous too!

She grabbed Kahlil's hand and softly rubbed it..

Jade stood stoically....One thing was for sure...This wasn't going to be a hung jury!

"We the Jurors ,representing the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania in the matter of Commonwealth Of Pennsylvania vs. John Robert Graham on the charge of Murder in the First Degree, We find the defendant NOT GUILTY!

"YES! CRAPPED OUT AGAIN YOU KEYSTONE COPPER!" said a jubilant and defiant Johnny Graham to Lt. Tragg.

Lt. Tragg looked like he wanted to charge him....

But ADA Adam Carpenter was livid....He felt like he'd been thrown to the lions..

"This was all your fault...There was another very viable suspect and you didn't even question him...

You missed the car on the other side of the street....ouuuuuuuu you just loused this case up...How did you ever make detective???....Arghhhhhhhhhhh!" he said angrilly and stormed out of the courthouse..

Assistant District Attorney Greg Mitchell stood outside the courtroom....Part of him felt like a heel turning this case over to his eager protoge' ,but he knew this case was a loser from the beginning...and he didn't want the headache..

He stared at winners, who were being congratulated...

"VETTIE GIRL!!! YOU DID IT!!" said Olivia, hugging Yvette and kissing her on the cheek!

"Thank you girl, Thank you for always being in my corner." said Yvette.

"Congratulations!" I said.

''We partied last night before he verdict...We really need some cold ones tonight."said Beverly , hugging Bee Bee and Sofia.

"It's Friday....We'll all be at the No I.D. Bar." said Bee Bee.

"Yeah... I just want to take these heels off... I brought some flats with me.."

"Ouuu girl yes...I always carry a pair of flats with me ."said Josie.

"Guys....Drinks are on me for you two...You were Ice Cold..." said Nelson.

"You taught us all we know about Voir Dire..."I said.

''And we are teaching you and Bree the same thing..." Kahlil said to Josie.

"Nelson said he might let me and Bree do Voir Dire next trial...." said Josie.

''Yeah...We think we are ready..."said Bresha,.

"Jade you did a bang up job at investigating this case... I'd of loved to have had you as a partner when I was on the force.

''Why Thank you." said Ms. Jade.

''Where you guys drinking tonight? Tell me and I'll meet you there... I gotta go pick up my plus one." laughed a very happy Johnny Graham.

It was the end of a case... and we were determined to make the best of it.

EPILOUGE:

Johnny's former partner, Jerome Rich was eventually arrested , tried and convicted of murdering his wife, Brianna Rich...He was disbarred and on the night before he was to surrender himself and begin serving his life sentence..

He was found dead in the same bedroom where his wife had met her end....Dead of a self inflicted gunshot wound...

"Geez, this is Jerome Rich, the attorney found guilty of killing his wife and framing his partner."said a CSI man observing the body....

"Wow, one shot to the head." said a Homicide Detective.

"That's usually all it takes." said another.

"Body temperature shows he's been dead for about six or seven hours...Neighbors said they heard the gunshot around noon." said Dr. Marcy Martin, assistant coroner.

"Bag him and tag him....get him out of here."said Lt. Tragg, having a weird case of Deja Vu.

He watched as the second body was put in a white body bag and strapped to a gurney from this very room.

But that Friday after Johnny's trial, things were looking up for us...We Were all at the NO ID BAR Celebrating his new found freedom.

"First Round of Drinks is On me for my brilliant legal team...Thank You Vettie, Keith, Bee Bee, Sofia, Kahlil and Ms. Jade.."said a very Happy and Jubilant Johnny Graham...

His lady friend, Attorney Glenda Pace was with him....She slyly removed his hands from under her skirt. He continued rubbing her legs...She smiled at him...

Drinks flowed...

"Thank You...Thank You Johnny," said Yvette.

"So what are your plans now? Your partner has disolved your partnership." asked Gary.

"I'll buy some more office space somewhere,,,Maybe get a new partner." he said smiling at Glenda and pinching her butt..

"Ouuuuuuuuuuuu...Stop it!" she laughed, jerking a little bit.

Bee Bee sat on my lap as I slurped a drink and she slurped a drink.

Sofia was sitting on Kahlil's lap ,also slurping a drink..

"Ummmmmmm I like how this feels too!" she said.

Jade and Danny were kissing passionately over in a corner....

Virginia observed them....She was sitting on Jetty's Lap..

"Yeah and on Saturday Morning, they have a great brunch which everybody attends...This place is packed with all the folks who live in the condos around here.."said Ray.

''Come with us tomorrow morning." said Jessica.

''We'll be around on the buses between 10:00- 10:30, you won't have to drive like you did tonight." said Chip.
