VENTURES: Squared Away

"WOWWWW I can't believe this... I would be spending my first night in a prison cell at Dolly Madison Correctional Faciltiy for women, instead, I'm still in Philadelphia in a courtroom at 8:00 pm... Un believable..." said our client Debra Brown.

"There are lots of unbelievable things in the world Debra." said Karen..

"I never got to thank you for arguing my case and getting it thrown out...Thank You." said Debra,.

"Oh Debra, this is my husband, Sean...He was the other attorney who argued your case." said Brooke.

"THANK YOU SO MUCH! PLEASED TO MEET YOU!" said Debra Brown , who whispered to Natalie.

"We've been Besties as long as we both have been practicing law...We met in D.C., when we were working for the Government...Then we both returned to Philly and became Public Defenders, then Assistant District Attorneys and finally here , Staff Attorneys for the Wrongful Conviction/Conviction Integrity Unit."explained Natalie.

"WOW YOU TWO REALLY HAVE HISTORY!! I like that..I like her tastes in men too...He's cute." giggled Debra... She liked Natalie and Brooke a lot.

COURTROOM-C

NIGHT COURT- TUESDAY NIGHT , 8:00 pm

In Philadelphia, Night Court only operates two nights a week....Tuesday and Thursday, Tonight was Tuesday...and fortunately...We got an arraignment date of 8:00 pm. We had been working furiously fast.

The Judge in this case would not be the Judge in the actual case....

Neither Lt. Tragg ,nor the arresting detective in this case was there... Night court was too low profile for him...No witnesses...No media..and a bunch of Judges and ADA's who were mostly older Judges and ADA's about to retire...It was lightweight. It was in session from 7:00 pm- 10:00 pm Tuesdays and Thursdays...We were quite fortunate to get a date.

The ADA that did show up was not going to be the ADA that tried the case...He had only the basic out line of the case at hand... He basically wanted to go home...So he didn't really put up much of a fight.

Karen came with the Bail Bondsman that Olivia and Yvette always used...

Me, Natalie,Brooke ,Debra Brown and Sean all sat together...

"I didn't know they had court at night.." said Debra...

"A lot of people don't know.... Including many attorneys. It meets two nights a week...Tuesday and Thursday..."I said.

"We were very fortunate to get an appointment this week and on this short of notice." said Natalie.

"Your charactor witnesses are here." said Brooke.

"I'm glad my girls came through...." said Debra.

''So many of them. ''Well it's showtime...let's go."laughed Sean.

We presented 29 charactor witnesses... That and the fact that Debra Brown,had been gainfully employed with no priors whatsoever and such a good name in the community convinced the judge that she was no flight risk... She was released on her own recognizance...

"OH MY GOD!! WHAT DOES THIS MEAN?" asked Debra Brown...

"It means you are a free woman until we get you a new trial and free you for good.. You can go home Debra." said Natalie.

''Do you have someplace to stay? We can drop you off." said Brooke.

"I'm staying with my sister....Sonia...If you can drop me off at her house that will be just fine.." said Debra.. "Thank you all sooooo much." she said.

"Here's our address...Stop by and see us tomorrow...We'll have a hot breakfast for you and everything and you'll get to meet some of our friends..." said Karen.

"You guys are the best....I love yall." said Debra.

''Well looks like you guys didn't need my services..."said the Bail Bondsman..

"Thanks anyway Gus." said Natalie.

It had been a good night.

"Yes, he was a bit of a butthead at times...Wouldn't listen to me either..." said Debra Brown...

''Well you don't have to worry about that anymore... You're with different attorneys now..."said Natalie.

"We aren't burned out and we don't fall asleep in the middle of the trial." I said.

"I'm sure she won't...She's not one of Lt. Tragg's collars...Won't be any unhinged Detective dogging her trail." said Sean.

"Pleased to meet you." said Jetty.

"Ms. Virginia, you know how to work it...Got you a cushy job as an Office Manager at a law firm and married to a Judge....My sister told me you were smart and resourceful." laughed Debra..

"A lot of that was luck baby girl..." said Virginia, Smiling..

After Breakfast we all retreated to our suite and our conference room-

"This is our Office and Conference Room."said Karen.

"Now, we know that the fire was electrical in nature...We have on file that you hired two electricians and that they did a piss poor job." said Natalie.

''We studied them and we see they had several consumer complaints against them. One wasn't even licensced....He was a jack leg of sorts." I said.

"I didn't hire either one of them...That no good ex-boyfriend of mine, Reggie Owens hired them... He knew one of them when he was in the joint and the other one was recommended to him by one of his scuzzball friends.." said Debra.

"Okay, an electrical fire burned down your house Last winter..A House you two were renting..."said Brooke.

"I was renting the house, Reggie was paying me rent and crashing there...In my bedroom for a time and then after we broke up on the living room couch..."said Debra..

''After the fire...He approached Cyclops Insurance about a settlement...A settlement he felt he was entitled to half of." said Sean.

"I don't know why he thought that....That was my place....My name is the only name on the rental agreement...He has no stake in my place...When I wouldn't agree to give him any money he tried to strangle me...Then he went to the cops and told them that I burned down the house, which I didn't do...

Next thing I know...I'm arrested and charged with Arson and he produced some doctored tape recording of me admitting to arson...That's not my voice on the tape." said Debra.

Bonnie produced the Zip Drive with the recorded message on it..

"I have the Zip drive with the recording on it...We are going to get a copy of your voice and compare it to this...If it's not your voice...There goes the state's case against you.." said Bonnie.

"Heyyyyy you're pretty sharp." said Debra.

"I was a Public Defender and an Assistant District Attorney in New York City for years before returning to my native Philadelphia and getting a P.I. License and getting a job at Cyclops Insurance..."said Bonnie Shay.

"Bonnie's kind of like a jack of all trades.." I said.

"At this point I'd advise you to turn off your cell phone and disable the GPS and give it to us for safe keeping...We'll lock it in our safe and return it to you after the trial."said Natalie.

She passed her a burner phone.

''Write this number down...Don't contact us through our business phones or personal phone numbers...You Use this number." said Natalie.

"This is a Portal...You can use this to contact us and to get updates on the progress of your case...You won't have to keep coming up here." said Brooke.

"WOW! You guys think of everything....." said Debra, astonished....

"We want you to be exonerated.... with as little problems as possible....."said Karen...

''Trust me, We are good at this." Laughed Sean..

"OH I BELIEVE YOU!"laughed Debra.

THE OFFICE OF ORVILLE NEWLY, ATTORNEY AT LAW...

A newly opened bottle of Jameson's Irish Whiskey was on his desk...

Attorney Orville Newly looked up as three attractive young women and myself walked into his office...

"WELLLLLLL HELLLLLLLOOOOOO!! WHAT CAN I DO FOR YOU?" he asked.

"I'm Karen Page -Benz, Attorney at the Wrongful Conviction/Conviction Integrity Unit and these are my associates,

"Attorney Brooke Marks...."

"Attorney Natalie Charles "

"and her husband, Attorney David Charles."she said.

"You....David Charles...We worked a case together, a few years back...You were a Public defender then...I remember you." he said.

"Yes we did Mr. Newly..." I said.

"I don't know if you know or not, but we have taken on the case of Debra Brown....We got her conviction tossed and we arraigned her a few nights ago and got her released ,pending a new trial." said Karen...

"Ohhhhh I'm so glad....Sorry about what happened to her....."In February 2025, a fire destroyed the home of 49-year-old Debra Brown. Debra's home had extensive electrical problems, and she had spent the night with her sister after the electrician failed to show. The insurance company declared that the fire was electrical in nature.

There were two electricians who supposedly worked on her house....One of them was an ex-con, who didn't even have a license...the other had a license but had so many complaints against him that I don't know how he got any work...

Her ratty ex-boyfriend, who was living there...A Reggie Owens or something wanted a piece of the insurance money....She refused, arguing rightfully that it was her property and all he did was crash there....

She told me her tried to choke her out and threaten her.... She said she reported this to the police, but I couldn't find the complaint...and the ADA....a guy named Bruce Greene, kept that and any information about the electricians who worked on the property out of the transcripts...So the Jury never heard about it..

Reggie came up with what I think was a bogus recording of her admitting to arson...and she got convicted.. I attempted to appeal...but my first appeal was shot down...I'm glad you guys were able to get her out." he said.

''We have a copy of the recording and we are going to do a voice analysis to determine if that's her or not.." said Brooke.

He smiled at Brooke..

"You married? Maybe we can uh go out for drinks and discuss this further.." he asked..

Natalie cracked up...

Brooke showed him her wedding bands...

"Yes I am married and there is nothing further to discuss...We came here for your case files and information on those two electricians....We are going to subpoena them..." said Brooke.

"Well you can forget about one of them....He's dead! He uh accidentally electrocuted himself trying to uh wire a home..." he said ..

I couldn't help it..I snickered...

"I'll give you the name and address of the other electrician and of Reggie Owens... Subpoena his ass too..I should have subpoenaed him the first trial.." said Orville Newly...
