VENTURES: A Burning Sensation

A Balmy Summer Day- That rare one day of the month when our building is closed..Natalie and I used this day to do our laundry....Then we decided to walk to other end of our block and have some coffee.

Natalie and I were at the new Coffee and pastry shop at the end of our block...

"Our clothes will be finished in about twenty minutes..."said Natalie.
as she sipped her coffee...

"It's nice that we took five and came out and had some coffee.." I said.

"It's nice we have this coffee shop at the end of our block...It's not Cakeman Raven's...but it'll do.."said Natalie.

"And a brand new laundromat too! Though I'm going to miss "Laundry day"...Since it's so close...Everybody comes when they need to, No more togetherness.." I sighed..

"Bev and Liv and Renee will come up with some other activity for us....I know.." said Natalie..

I leaned over and kissed her...

"And speaking of activity...." I said, laughing....

"Don't get all excited....That activity is going to have to wait until we finish this laundry..." said Natalie, smiling..

"But I can't resist you.." I said as we continued kissing...

"You're going to have to....Ummmmmmmmmmmmmmm you're getting me hot." said Natalie as our kissing got more passionate....

Brooke walked in just then...

"You two can't keep your hands off of each other!!!....I knew you were in here making out.."she laughed..

"I put your laundry in the dryer." she said.

"Hi Brooke." I said, smiling, "Sit down, have a coffee." I said.

"Thanks Bestie....Our laundry finished faster than I thought...Either that or we've been in here longer than I thought." said Natalie.

"Try for the latter." laughed Brooke...

Brooke took a disinfectant wipe and wiped Natalie's lipstick smudges off of my face....

"Hail, Hail, the Gangs all here.." said Beverly and her cousin, Kayla...

"Heyyyyy, we all had the same idea.." said Josie.

Bresha Billips...

"Liv gave us the day off...So we decided to do some laundry...." she said.

''And since we all were home, we girls decided to do our laundry.. Our husbands are asleep. David , you're the only husband awake ...You're a good guy."laughed Jazzy.

and Renee Cantrell-Jones.

"That's right....Our laundry is washing...so we decided to come down here and have coffee." said Renee.

"My Husband was just saying he misses "Laundry day", so he got his wish...This is kind of like a mini "Laundry Day." said Natalie.

Who was applying her lipstick.

"Couldn't ask for better company." said Brooke.

We all sat and drank coffee and laughed and talked while waiting for our laundry to finish...It was a nice day.

Miles Away at Valhalla Women's Correctional Center, a young Black women desperately fires off two letters..

The First Letter is to Virgina Shaw-Dukes, a former attorney and former inmate who was known to have advocated for several women when she was in prison. She was now an office manager for a prestigious law firm in the city....The Second letter was to District Attorney Gil Garcetti.

She had been falsely convicted of Arson! She had had poor legal representation. She wrote about all of this..She was going away to serve a year in prison for something she didn't do. She was going to be shipped to Dolly Madison Correctional Center for Women within a few days...She desperately hoped she got to somebody who could help her in time.

Meanwhile, we all returned to the laundromat and finished our laundry...

At home, Natalie and I unloaded our laundry and began putting it away..

She unloaded her laundry bag
and began hanging up some of her bras and putting her panties away....

I watched her putting her things away...with rapt attention after I put my things away.

She saw me and smiled...

"See something you like?" she asked.

''Yeah! I see something I like." I said.

I grabbed her and kissed her....

"YOU!" I said....

She giggled...

"You are soooo crazy!" she laughed...

"Crazy about you!"I said as we kissed passionately....

"UMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM!" I moaned..

We were back in our building, having breakfast and preparing for our work day....

"WOW! I love a week like this...Off on a Wednesday...Work Thursday and Friday and then off Saturday and Sunday." said Jazzy...

"It does seem like a Holiday week of sorts." said her husband, Dabnis...

"Yeah... This weekend, we are going to Bayside for shopping, dining and roller skating.."said Kayla.

"Does the fun ever end?" asked her husband Ray.

"I'm glad it doesn't...So many years...I had no man, no girlfriends and nothing to do on weekends except hang out at bars every now and then.."said Jessica.

"Now you've got Sisters....and a husband and a number of activities." said Kayla, hugging her.

"I think most of us were in the same boat before we moved around here...Living in the Condos amongst strangers....It's good to be united with friends...Old and New."said Jazzy.

Jessica's husband Chip , who dated Jazzy before he met Jessica looked at her diffrently now.. She was less hard edged, she was softer, more likable, he thought to himself. Dabnis is lucky he found her when he did.

"Karen can I come down after breakfast....I got a letter from someone and I think their case is right up your alley."said Virginia.

"Okay....I just got a call from the District Attorney...He said he has a case right up my alley. This is an interesting day." said Karen.

"That's what you have staff for...To help you out when you get into these situations." said Natalie.

"We are at your service Boss lady..." I said.

"That's right!" said Brooke.

"How fortunate am I?" laughed Karen..

"I'm here too...You know I'm always available to help you guys out."said Sean.

''Awwwwww that's so nice to have such support."said Zoey, smiling.

''Well, we support our boss the same way." said Lem.

"Yes we do." agreed Renee, smiling.

''Same here, Dabnis knows we got his back." said Tyrell.

"Yup Yup." said Paris.

"Well, it's back to my building and work after breakfast...I'll see you at Lunch baby." said Lee.

"Yeah....Maybe tomorrow we can all eat outside on the roof." said Matthew.

"It's supposed to be hot tomorrow...I prefer inside this well air conditioned cafeteria."said Nina.

"Yeah I do too!"laughed Carlos.

"Ditto that." said Ms. Yvette.

''We should have done our laundry yesterday Bee Bee." I said.

"It's okay...We can do it Sunday afternoon after Super Brunch." said Bee Bee.

"Yeah, us and Jessica...and Ms. Jade can make a day of it..."said Sofia.

"I miss Laundry day, when we all used to do our laundry together." said Kahlil.

"Well this is better..This laundromat is closer, bigger and more modern."said Jade.

"Vettie I have to visit Karen after Breakfast."said Virginia.

"Oh that's okay...." said Yvette.Virginia's husband ,

Jetty looked on...

AFTER BREAKFAST -

We were all in our conference room..

Karen was on the phone with D.A. Gil Garcetti.

''Wonder what Ms. Virginia wants?" asked my wife, Natalie.

"I know what I want.." I whispered in her ear..

"You always want it.." giggled Natalie.

"She said it concerns a case...."said Brooke.

"Gil Garcetti has a case too..." said Sean...

"Hi Virginia....What'cha got?" asked Karen....

putting her phone down.

"As you all know, I was an Attorney like you guys once and I made a mistake...A Mistake that caused me to be disbarred and to spend 7 years of my life as a guest of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania..

Well While I was there...I used my legal skills to help the girls write briefs , find attorneys that could help them and actually get out of prison...In all I helped 75 girls gain their release before I myself was paroled and met you beautiful people.

One of the people I helped gain release was a woman named Sonia Brown...She is now on the board of a Halfway House that helps young women after they are released from prison... Her sister, Debra Brown is in trouble.. She's been falsely convicted of setting a property on fire..." said Virginia. "She and her sister reached out to me for help... I can't represent her...but you guys can..."said Ms. Virginia.

"Oh My God...That what D.A. Garcetti called me about... She sent a letter to him too! Saying she was falsely convicted and didn't have proper legal representation...We are talking about the same person..."said Karen.

"Here is a photo of Debra Brown-"said Virginia, who placed a glossy on the desk.

Debra Brown was a pretty woman.

"In February 2025, a fire destroyed the home of 49-year-old Debra Brown. Debra's home had extensive electrical problems, and she had spent the night with her sister after the electrician failed to show. The insurance company declared that the fire was electrical in nature.

But after the fire, Debra Brown's former roommate, Reggie Owens,

approached Debra, grabbed her by the throat and threatened to tell the police that she burned the house down unless she gave him a piece of the insurance money.

Debra refused and reported the assault to the police.

Reggie then went to the police and accused Debra of arson, presenting audio tapes in which a female voice said she "lit a match and burned the house down."

Based on Reggie's report, Debra was arrested and charged with arson. At the trial, the police denied knowledge of the assault. Debra testified that the voice on the tape was not hers, while her defense attorney highlighted Reggie's extensive criminal background and argued that Reggie had fabricated the tape to get back at Debra for refusing to pay him.

Debra was convicted of arson and sentenced to 12 months in prison and two years of probation. "said Ms. Virginia.

"Looks like we would've been on this case , whether you contacted us or not Virginia.Gil wants us to look into it.."said Karen.

"Where is she now?" asked Brooke.

''She's at Valhalla...but Tuesday she's scheduled to be shipped to Dolly Madison to begin serving her year."said Virginia.
"Then we've got to work fast....and I mean, really fast."said Natalie. "It's Thursday." she added.

''Who was her attorney?" I asked.

''A Guy named Orville Newly....." said Virginia.

"Oh My God....I know him....I remember him..When I was first starting out.. He smelled like a liquor store and was drunk most of the time.. I think he was just burned out...He scared me...He made me wonder if that was my future.. I was second on a trial with him once...He fell asleep during the trial and farted...loudly...So Loud, the Judge woke him up, held him in contempt and sent him to the cooler." I said.

"EWWWWWWWWW.HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH! DID YOU FINISH THE CASE?" Laughed Natalie.

"I did...I got an acquittal, No thanks to him." I said.

"EWWWWWWWWW.HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH! I remember you told that story before...I'd heard of Orville Newly too! He was an alcoholic... He was in AA the last I heard..Hasn't practiced in three years." Laughed Brooke.

"He is practicing again....I don't know about the drinking, but he was still falling asleep during the trial and farting...He was a little better this trial...but not good enough." said Virginia.

Sean laughed..."Oh My God! Oh My God!" he said.

"He's not important...We've got to get up here and get to work, Starting tomorrow." said Karen.

It was a hot summer night.....

When we got home..I went to the refrigerator....I grabbed a bottled water.

The cold water felt good running down my throat, some of it running down my neck.....

Natalie was in the bathroom.

"DAVID! COME HERE!" called Natalie from the bathroom.....

I walked in.... Natalie was semi undressed...

She took me in her arms and kissed me passionately for a few minutes.....

Bull Bailey was working here today.....He truly hated being a prison guard....He had been a decorated detective once...rising to the rank of Lieutenant...and had then been a Federal Investigator...only to lose it all when it was discovered he planted evidence on a suspect in a case and tried to frame Brooke. He lost his prestigious job and was now living off of his police pension and this job...How far he had fallen...How bitter he was.. He still carried a torch for Brooke, who he delusionally believed he had a shot at once..

"Working up here today huh? "I said trying to make conversation...After all he shouldn't have anything against me...

"Yeah, I'll be at the Men's jail next week." he said Begrudgingly....

He hated my wife ,Natalie with a passion...He falsely believed that she drove a wedge in between him and Brooke... He didn't even try to speak to her... Not that she cared... She despised him equally.

"Good Morning Brooke...You're looking as pretty as ever this morning." he said with a smile.

"Good Morning!" was all Brooke would say in return...She had no interest whatsoever in conversing or sharing any pleasentries with him. His shenanigans had nearly ended her legal career and nearly sent her to prison.

The visiting room was pleasent...

Debra Brown was ecstatic upon seeing us...

"You're the lawyers Virginia sent!" she said.

"Ms. Virginia works in our building....She's the Office Manager and Legal Consultant for McCluskey/Cozen/Connor & Pratt, Attorneys at law..She also lives a block away from us..."explained Natalie.

"We are from the D.A.'s Office...We are Attorneys from the Wrongful Conviction/Conviction Integrity Unit...We are here to represent you.. I'm Attorney Brooke Marks....This is my associate, Attorney Natalie Charles..."said Brooke.

"Pleased to meet you..."said Natalie... "This is my husband, Attorney David Charles...we all used to be Public Defenders..." said Natalie...

"Pleased to meet you....Our Boss, Attorney Karen Page -Benz and Mrs. Marks husband, Attorney Sean

Marks are right now arguing in Appellate Court to get your case thrown out...and get a new trial ordered." I said.

"Oh My God, thank youuuuuuu...They are getting ready to ship me to Dolly Madison this coming Tuesday.....You guys came at the nick of time..." said Debra Brown...
