VENTURES: More Than A Reasonable Doubt

THURSDAY NIGHT-CURLEY'S BAR, COUPLES NIGHT, THE EVE OF THE TRIAL

As usual, Drinks were plentiful!

"It's not often we've had a trial begin on a Friday..." said Yvette.

"I know , usually they end on a Friday."laughed her husband, Gary...

"Just as well, maybe by this time next week the whole thing will be over." I said.

"Hope Springs Eternal Hot stuff." said Bee Bee.

"Yeah it does.." said Sofia.

"I think we have enough and the prosecution has so little that we can wrap it up in a week."said Kahlil.

"I've already ascertained that Beeker was the killer. He's a gun nut...He has a collection of street guns that aren't registered to anybody that were found in his apartment...Guns just like the murder weapon...And he wasn't the brightest bulb in the lamp."said Jade.

"He had two arrests, Manslaughter and Assault and the fiance, Millicent Hatcher repped him successfully twice.." said Sofia.

"He owed her and she called in a favor."said Bee Bee.

"He fits the description of the man seen running from the scene...Six Foot ,Three." I said.

"And he had on a tan jacket, the night he killed himself." said Kahlil.

"You Guys have built quite a case.. Yvette...you've got a good team assembled..." laughed Danny Ho.

"I know...I'm so proud of them...The work they do." said Yvette.

"I love working with them too...They are so receptive and eager to learn new things." said Virginia.

"Reminds me of you in the bedroom." whispered Jetty..

"Oh Hush up." laughed Virginia, blushing a little bit.

"I've heard that Bruce Greene and a new prosecutor, here from Cherry Hill will be prosecuting the case."said Olivia.

"Yes, her name is Melody Cooper...I hear she's good."said Yvette.

"There is going to be a clash of egos in that courtroom....Bruce thinks he's the best and he won't take kindly to a woman, especially a woman as smart as he." said Donnie Ray.

"He is such a tool."said Beverly...

''Well at any rate you guys have enough there to wrap this thing up in a week."said Nelson...

''And next Weekend, maybe we'll all go somewhere or do something cool."said Josie.

"Yeah...I wouldn't mind another trip to the Beach."said Paris.

"That would sound like fun...What do you think Nelson?" asked Olivia.

"It's alright with me, if everybody is down."said Nelson with a smile.

"I'd be down."said Bresha.

"Me too!" said Tony...

"Well let's call Renee and get it together...Whether it's next week or the week after."said Alfreda.

"Sounds like a plan."laughed Rockland ,looking at Serendipity and Kevin Collins.. "Ugh, maybe they could uh join us." he laughed..

Serendipity and Kevin Collins were kissing passionately and had missed most of the conversation.

Kissing so passionately ,both Bee Bee and I were a little excited..

"Come up for air you two."laughed Bee Bee.

"Ohhhh! Uhhhhhhh! Excuse us.."said Kevin...

"Oh..sorry!" laughed Serendipity,blushing like crazy..

"It's alright Dip...It's couples night...You're supposed to kiss your man...I'm about to kiss mine."giggled Jazzy..

"I can't wait." said Dabnis..

"I know you can't you horn dog..."laughed Jazzy as she kissed him..

"UMMMMMMMMMM!" he moaned.

"Drinking and loving, that's what tonight is all about."laughed Kayla.

"I'm gonna save the last part for when we get home.."laughed Ray...

Kayla smiled and removed his hands from up under her skirt....

"Cool it Papa, we are still in public." she laughed.

Giving Ray a soft kiss...

That lead to a more passionate kiss.

"Such a nice warm fall night."said Jessica.

"After all that rain earlier...It's nice to have a nice sunny day and a warm almost spring like night."said Chip.

"It is." said Karen.

"I can't thank you and Karen enough for putting me up."said our client George Barry..

"No problem George...Good Luck with your trial tomorrow."said B.L.

"You got me some damn good lawyers." said George Barry.

Natalie was sitting on her husband's lap, with her head buried in his shoulders...

''Somebody has had a little too much to drink."laughed her husband, David.

"That's why we are grateful for you guys, our husbands...We know we are in good hands."said Brooke, who was also sitting on her husband's lap, with her head buried in his shoulders...

Sean was sipping on a drink with one hand and holding Brooke with the other.

"I'm going to have to pull my protoge and her boyfriend apart..."joked Nina.

"Leave them alone...It is a night of love." said her husband, Carlos.

Lee and Matthew were kissing very passionately in a corner..

"OHHHHHHHHH MATTHEW!" moaned Lee.

"UMMMMMMMMMMMM LEE." moaned Matthew..

"I DON'T THINK I CAN LET YOU GO!" he said in between kisses...

"I DON'T WANT YOU TO!" she said..

"Typical Couples Night."laughed Zoey...

"Yeah it is." said her husband, Lem...

Renee and Tyrell were engulfed in passionate kisses...

And Kevin Collins and Serendipity had begun kissing again...

"Oh No!" said Yvette...

"I see him." said Olivia...

Assistant District Attorney Bruce Greene walked in.....He had been under the weather the past few days with a bad cold.. He was feeling better today and he was out for the first time since that very rainy night

when he had rang Serendipity's doorbell and got soaked.

He zeroed in on the area we all were sitting in and he saw Renee and her husband, Tyrell, smooching like crazy and Serendipity and Kevin Collins also kissing passionately...

"SO HE'S THE MYSTERY MAN!!! COLLINS, THAT SNAKE!" he bellowed..

He tossed his suit jacket in the air and began spinning around like a top....

"There goes the suit jacket....I should've bet some money on this."laughed Beverly...

"I knowwwwww you've made a mint." laughed Yvette.

"I can't wait to get into court....I'm going to humble them something terrible....OUUUUUUUU

JUST WAIT!" he said angrilly and stomped his foot and stormed out of the bar...

''What's with him?" asked Curley.

''Who Knows?" said Yvette.. but she knew.

COURTROOM A- FRIDAY MORNING

"CASE 101 COMMONWEALTH OF PENNSYLVANIA VS. GEORGE R. BARRY, CHARGED WITH FIRST DEGREE MURDER!" said the Baillif.

Our Favorite Judge, Kelly Ann Mercer was presiding.

"COMMONWEALTH OF PENNSYLVANIA VS. ERICA TAYLOR ,CHARGE: FIRST DEGREE MURDER!" said the Bailiff..

"Good Morning, Good Morning, Good Morning Attorneys and Jurors...I am Judge Kelly Ann Mercer..

We are going to seat a jury today and trial will start Monday morning... I know all of the attorneys involved...but would you introduce yourselves to the court please?" she said.

"REPRESENTING THE COMMONWEALTH YOUR HONOR, ASSISTANT DISTRICT ATTORNEY

and FORMER CANDIDATE FOR THE DISTRICT ATTORNEY BRUCE GREENE.!" said Bruce Greene, smiling snarkily and looking at us at the defense table.

"Also representing the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, Assistant District Attorney, Melody Cooper your honor." said Melody.

"Oh My GOD!! HOW LONG IS HE GOING TO REMIND US HE RAN FOR DISTRICT ATTORNEY?" mumbled Bee Bee to Ms. Yvette.

"Mrs. Yvette Jones-Lockwood-Lead Attorney for the Defense your honor."said Ms. Yvette, smiling at Bee Bee's remark.

"Keith Jones, Attorney for the Defense your honor."I said.

"Mrs. Beatrice Evans-Jones, Attorney for the Defense your Honor." said Bee Bee.

"Mrs. Sofia Garcia- Ahmed, Attorney for the Defense , your Honor." said Sofia.

"Kahlil Ahmed, Attorney for the defense your honor." said Kahlil.

"SERENDIPITY HARPER, ATTORNEY FOR THE DEFENSE YOUR HONOR." said Serendipity..

''Kevin Collins, Attorney for the Defense your honor."said Kevin.

Jade and our client, George Barry sat quietly.....saying nothing...

"Serendipity.....That's a pretty name.... And You are Judge Thelma Harper's daughter right? Ohhh she must be soo proud of you. Alright...We will now have jury selection.." said Judge Kelly Ann..

''While you were out of the office, I studied the jury pool...Let me handle voir dire." said Melody...

"Mrs. Cooper, let me remind you that I am the lead Attorney on this case....and I handle Voir Dire.." said Bruce Greene.

He would have done better if he had allowed Melody Cooper the chance to face us on voir dire..

He did have his old swagger and confidence and he had excellent questions for the jurors...He had prepared well..

But not well enough!Kahlil and I knew what jurors we wanted...We knew all about them, which gave us a slight advantage.

Bee Bee and Sofia sat behind us, with their laptops which had notes and additional questions...Which they whispered to us.

We battled him to a 9-3 split, going our way...With the Jury Foreman being one of our picks...An enormous victory for our side..

Melody Cooper was exasperated...She knew that she would've done better than that.....She looked over at Yvette.

It was obvious she was the boss...but she had put her ego aside and allowed her team to do Voir Dire without a care in the world..

Unlike this spoiled Man-Baby she was working with who couldn't take his eyes off of one of Yvette's other attorneys..

Serendipity Harper...

"Okayyyy we have a jury....Trial will begin Monday Morning promptly at 10:00 Am., this courtroom..Attorneys, Jurors, be on time and be ready for trial.." said Kelly Ann.

She quickly dismissed court.

Her boyfriend, Lt. Arthur Tragg

was not in court today...He and Bruce Greene did not get along and neither man really relished being in the other's company.

COURTROOM A- MONDAY MORNING

The first degree murder trial of George Barry began...

Bruce Greene gave an eloquent synopsis of George Barry being a successful camera man and being madly in love with Jillian Dantley, the co-host of a popular TV show at his station...They were engaged to be married for almost a year, when she suddenly broke it off...

She had a new man..Eric Tabor....George was not happy about it and had confronted Eric Tabor on two such occassions... All of this bad feeling led to unfortunately a murder....The Murder of Jillian Dantley.

Yvette and Kevin Collins eloquently rubutted his entire argument..Stating that although their client was not happy about the breakout...That did not make him a murderer...

Me, Bee Bee, Sofia and Kahlil presented our 15 original charactor witnesses who testified to our client's non-violent nature and all around nice guy image...

Of course Bruce objected to this witnesses even being allowed to speak, but the four of us recited chapter and verse of general laws, laws from simular cases and predicates that justified them speaking on our client's behalf..

Judge Kelly Ann had no choice but to rule in our favor.

ADA Melody Cooper sat angrilly ,shaking her head... She had made several suggestions to Bruce that he had totally ignored... She admired how Yvette and her team interacted with one another, never getting in each other's way and seemingly working very well together for a common goal. No Egos.

Bruce called his first witness Jeff Tabor...Jillian's fiance at the time of her death.

He admitted that he and George Barry had had two near violent confrontations concerning Jillian in the weeks leading up to her murder..

On Cross Serendipity asked him if their confrontations ever actually got violent... He admitted that they hadn't..She then asked him if it were true that he and HIS EX-FIANCE HAD HAD VIOLENT CONFRONTATIONS in the weeks leading up to the murder..

Bruce accused her of badgering the witness and then argued relevance..

"One or the other counselor, Make up your mind..."said the Judge.. "Still I'd like to hear the answer to this question."said the Judge.

"Yes, Millicent was very fiery and we had about three loud arguments in the street during the weeks leading up to Jillian's death." he admitted..

"No further questions your honor." said Serendipity, smiling.

Bruce called his next witness-

Phyliss Reed who said-"I was getting ready to turn in for the night..and around five minutes to midnight...I heard a woman's scream and then either a gunshot or somebody's car backfiring....but I didn't see anything." said Phyllis Reed.

"Well in one report, you told detectives you saw a man in an undershirt, a white undershirt running away...Did you?" asked Kevin Collins.

"I can't be sure...but I did hear a woman scream and then a gun shot.." she said.

"You're sure of that?" I asked.

"Yes, that's right.." she said.

Kahlil showed her a photo of Ralph Beeker...

"Ever see this man before?" he asked..

"Yes that's the man I saw running away...I think." she said.

"You think? You told Lt. Tragg and I have it here in the police report, "I saw a guy about Five Eleven

to Six Feet, running away in a white T-shirt..."said Yvette..

"I'm not sure...I'm not sure." she said.

"No further questions." said Yvette, smiling.

"I told you her testimony was troubling...I told you." said Melody..

"Would you please be quiet and let me run the show?" said Bruce...now visibly frustrated..

He called his next witness Matt Lucas.

"I think it was around midnight...I heard a woman scream...then I heard a gunshot....I looked out my window and I saw a white male...about 6 foot 2 running from the scene...I didn't see his face..."said neighbor, Matt Lucas.

"You said you heard a gunshot, then you heard a woman scream...I have your statement right here in the crime scene transcript..."said Bee Bee on cross.

"You either heard a scream then a gunshot or a gunshot and a scream...what did you hear?" asked Sofia.

"I'm not sure what I heard first....but the gunshot was so loud!" he said.

Kevin Collins showed him a photo of Ralph Beeker.

"Ever see this man?" he asked.

"That jacket looks familliar and the build of the guy looks familliar." said Matt Lucas.

"You agree that it's not my client who is an even six feet right?" I said.

"Well uh if you say so." he said.

"If you say so sounds like Chinese Food....Do you agree it's not our client or not?" asked Kahlil..

"I'm not sure." said Matt Lucas.

"Both of your witnesses have been obliterated...What's your next move counselor?" asked Melody Cooper.

For once Bruce was speechless...There was no game plan...We had destroyed his two witnesses and he had lost the jury....He had lost the jury and he knew it...

Melody Cooper was so frustrated that that afternoon, She quit....She announced to the press that she was leaving the prosecution team and that she didn't feel they had a case that could be won!

Both Bruce Greene and Deputy D.A. Lester Burke hit the ceiling at her announcement....but there was nothing they could do...

Yvette and Serendipity opened their defense on Wednesday stating that our client was not anywhere near the scene and that while he was understandably upset with Jillian leaving him and breaking up a year long engagement..He did not kill her...It was not in his nature.

Bruce sat stoically...

We called Millicent Hatcher who was dressed to the nines with a beautiful suit that included a mini skirt and heels and shapely legs that attracted the attention of the male jurors and males in the audience. She knew she was attractive and always used that to her advantage,.

"You were engaged to Jeff Tabor for close to a year yourself before he met Jillian..." asked Yvette.

"Yes I was." she said.

Yvette pulled out a tablet..

"You didn't take it so good did you?

These are several emails you sent to him after the breakup over a period of six months ,laced with profanity and threats of violence...You were more than upset." said Yvette...

Serendipity showed the tablet with the emails to the jury....

"I have several people who will testify that they saw you and Jeff Tabor in several violent incidents."

said Serendipity...

Yvette showed her a photo of the late Ralph Meeker.

"Do you know this man?" Yvette asked.

"No I don't.." she surprisingly said.

"You're under oath and as an attorney you KNOW THAT! You represented this man on a Manslaughter charge when you were a Public Defender....and You represented him again on an Assault charge also when you were a Public Defender... This is your private number....you called him 27 times in the days leading up to the murder... You took $2500.00 in cash out of your bank account... Incidentally, when Mr. Meeker was found dead of a self inflicted gunshot wound in a bar a few weeks ago.. He had $2500.00 dollars on him...Still want to say YOU DON'T KNOW HIM? I think you paid him to kill your rival..Jillian Dantly..."said Yvette.

Bruce Greene screamed -"OBJECTION!!! RAMPANT SPECULATION YOUR HONOR!!" and tossed his suit jacket up in the air.. This brought the jury to howling laughter....

"You can't prove any of that!" she said softly...

"No I can't right now... but I have at least given the jury reasonable doubt about my client's guilt."said Yvette, looking at the the jury..."None of the State's witnesses are positive about what and who they saw that night and this woman has a pretty cozy relationship with the man most believe was the actual killer.. None of this points to my client..... Be very cautious when you deliberate his guilt or innocence. The Defense rests your honor." said Ms. Yvette.

"I'm not answering anymore questions without the advice of my attorney."said Millicent Hatcher.

Yvette smiled.. "I'm not asking you anymore questions! That's a good idea. No further questions...The Defense Rests." said Yvette.

III-

COURTROOM WAITING AREA- THURSDAY AFTERNOON-

"Coffees everybody..."said Serendipity..

"Get em while they're hot.."said Kevin Collins

as they passed hot steaming tumblers of coffee to everyone.

"You guys did an incredible job....I think you once again."said our client, George Barry.

"Now it all depends on the jury." said Ms. Yvette.

"I don't think they are going to deliberate long."I said.

''We laid our case out and created more than reasonable doubt." said Bee Bee.

"Yes..I can't see how any jury could vote any other way but not guilty..."said Sofia.

"Once again...you did an excellent job of investigating Jade."said Kahlil.

"Thank you." said Jade.

Over in the corner, Millicent Hatcher was distraught...Talking to her attorney H.Stanley Stanlison...

"Oh My God...They destroyed me in court...I'm going to jail..." she said.

"They have nothing...Just a lot of speculation...They didn't really prove anything...Well not enough to indict you...In fact...You have testified...You don't have to stay here..Come on...Let's get out of here." said her attorney, H. Stanley Stanlison.

Bruce Greene stood soically...He knew he had lost...He had wanted to win this case so bad, to humiliate Serendipity and get revenge on Kevin Collins for his humiliation of him years ago in court...Tears flowed down his cheeks.. And the fact that Kevin Collins appeared to have Serendipity made him even more upset...

"The Jury is back"said a bailiff. They had only been out for 90 minutes.

"Has the Jury come to a decision?"asked Judge Kelly Anne.

"We have your honor."said the Jury Foreman..

He passed the decision to the Judge , who read it and smiled.

"Read it!" she said.

" WE THE JURY REPRESENTING THE COMMONWEALTH OF PENNSYLVANIA IN THE MATTER OF PENNSYLVANIA VS GEORGE R. BARRY , WE FIND THE DEFENDENT, NOT GUILTY OF THE CHARGE OF FIRST DEGREE MURDER!!said the Bailiff...

George Barry pumped his fists in the air...

"YEAHHH! THANK YOU GUYS SO MUCH!!" said George Barry.

"You are sooo welcome."said a joyful Yvette.

"It was so nice working with you guys.."said Serendipity....

"Always a pleasure...I'm almost sorry it's over."said Kevin Collins.

"I said we'd wrap this thing up by Friday...We wrapped it up by Thursday." I said,

"Ohhh what a relief..."said Bee Bee.

"Yessssssssss"said Sofia,hugging her life long friend.

"This was a nice win for us." said Kahlil.

"I knew we'd win.."said Jade.

Bruce Greene tossed his suit jacket up in the air and spun around like a top and fell to the ground ,kicking his heels up in the air like a spoiled child..

"YOUNG MAN!! YOUNG MAN!! CONTROL YOURSELF!! BAILIFFS TAKE HIM OUT OF MY COURTROOM!" said an exasperated Judge Kelly Ann...

Several Bailiffs ushered Bruce Greene out of the courtroom..

"Oh My God...Does he always act like that?" asked Serendipity..

"Always..."laughed Bee Bee..

"He was almost your boyfriend."said Sofia.

"Thank god I dodged that bullet." said Serendipity..

THURSDAY NIGHT-CURLEY'S BAR, COUPLES NIGHT, HOURS AFTER THE TRIAL!

As usual, Drinks were plentiful!

''First Round is on me to my wonderful associates, who helped me knock it out the park and in record time...One Week." said Ms. Yvette.

"Where is Serendipity and Kevin Collins tonight?" asked her husband, Gary,

"They chose to stay in...but they're coming out with us tomorrow at the NO I.D. Bar" I said.

"And they're going Down the Shore with us on Saturday." said Bee Bee.

"It'll be a good time." said Sofia.

"Yeah, I can't wait." said Kahlil.

"We deserve a good time..We've been working hard." said Jade.

"Yes, we have." said Danny Ho.

"I love it when we all hang out." said Virginia.

"So do I...like tonight."said Jetty.

"Yes like tonight..." said Nina..

"Can't beat this." said Carlos.

"I know Serendipity and Kevin are screwing each other's brains out right about now."laughed Olivia.

"Oh you know it...They couldn't wait to get out of that courtroom."laughed Yvette.

"Well I'm just glad we'll all have a little down time for a change." said Donnie Ray..

"I know right?" said Beverly...

"Jetty is bringing some new Ports of Wine that I just gotta try." said Nelson.

"And that's the place for it...Afterwords you can go and lie down and don't have to worry about the next day." said Josie.

"I'm all for it.. I plan to sleep all the way down there."laughed Paris.

''Me too Paris." laughed Bresha.

"Just one more day to work, tomorrow..Then it's a three day weekend." said Tony.

"Yeah I'm looking forward to it too.!" said Alfreda.

"Is Sissy and the guys coming down too? I heard they chipped in and bought the house next door to ours." said Rockland.

"They did and they are.." said Danny Ho.

"I'm looking forward to a cozy and restful weekend..." said Jazzy.

"No Bikinis?" joked Dabnis.

"Noooooo, it's too cold to get in any water."said Jazzy.,

"He's kidding..He knows we aren't getting in any water." said Kayla.

"We'll just have to dream Dabnis.."laughed Ray.

"You two couples are soo funny."laughed Jessica.

"We'll be playing a lot of cards and listening to a lot of music." said Chip.

"Yupper...I can't wait." said Karen.

''Yvette, thank you again for representing my friend and getting him off." said B.L.

"It was nothing...This was one of the more easier cases."said Yvette.

"I didn't buy a bikini swim suit....but I did buy some new string bikini panties." whispered Lee to Matthew.

His eyes lit up and a great big smiled appeared on his face.

Natalie was sitting on her husband's lap, quaffing down a beer.

David wasn't drinking...He was just happy to be holding Natalie.

The same could be said for Brooke ,who was sitting on Sean's lap, sipping a Martini.

Sean was quaffing down a beer.

"You know what this place needs...Peanuts or Popcorn." said Zoey.

"When you see Curley, make the suggestion."said Lem.

"Olivia, Alfreda and I have everything organized..The Food, The Games and the Music."said Renee.

"I always said if you ever get tired of this law thing, you could be an event planner baby!" said Tyrell.

Bruce Greene walked in...He had calmed down since his loss in court.... He scanned the crowd..

He did not see Serendipity or Kevin Collins....Good! He didn't want to see them tonight..

Lt. Tragg, who hadn't bothered to come to trial at all was in a corner with Judge Kelly Anne Mercer kissing her passionately.... and rubbing her legs...

"They need to get a room." he muttered angrilly...

At Serendipity's house, She and Kevin had chosen to stay home...

"I'm sooo glad we are joining our friends this weekend at the beach."said Serendipity...

"They are all so together, so connected..."said Kevin Collins..
