Pieces Of A Dream

Sometimes we just happen to be in the wrong place at the wrong time or maybe...Maybe for some people, the right place at the right time...

We were celebrating our client ,Chimanda Smith's courtroom victory and over 3 million dollar payoff with a going away dinner for her at a Tony Rooftop Restaurant...She was leaving for Miami for a few weeks before returning and buying a house.

"Liv, Bev, Donnie Ray, Guys, I'm so glad you could join me at this place...It's one of my favorite restaurants." said Chimanda... 

"It's one of my husband's too.. He brought me here the first time ,shortly after we got married.."gushed Olivia.

''And we liked it so much , we eventually got around to telling the others." I joked.

"It's incredible...The food is delish." said Beverly...

"We've been here alone and with the rest of the gang." said Nelson.

"This place is perfect...I love the ambiance." said Josie.

Paris smiled..

Bresha was just happy to be included in this great group. She loved working for a "Black run, Black Female owned Boutique law firm with attorneys only a little older than her..like Josie and Bev, who were like the older sisters she never had and "Fun Guys" like me and Nelson...Her Big Brothers and Olivia, Olivia  "who took her in off the street"she always said, right after she passed the bar and taught her the ropes of being a working attorney.

Her husband, Tony, who graduated with her from law school and took the bar with her, who always thought that we and all of our friends were "Mad Cool" was also glad to be with us..

''And Liv thank you so much for introducing me to your realtor..She's going to find me a house in your area...So You'll be running into me at the Shopping Centers, Maybe the movies, the gym or some of these fly clubs..." said Chimanda.

"Oh that's just great.." said Olivia..

As our meals began to arrive at our table.. New York Strip Steaks for some of us, Lobster for the rest...

and Martini's to wash it down...

Olivia told me that she didn't eat like this until she married Elwood, her first husband...She didn't have this kind of money...

And for Beverly, Nelson, Josie and Bree, it certainly wasn't until they became a part of her law firm and began making the good money we were now making..

I did eat this well back in New Orleans as a musician on the side and a hipster who spent a lot of my paycheck on food and clothing, sometimes having to borrow rent money from my Big sister. I was a lifetime from that life now.. Married and settled.. Working as an Investigator for Olivia and Beverly's law firm and saving and investing the money she paid me and the money I made on the side as a musician still..

I still spent a lot of money on clothes and fine dining, but now I could afford it...

Josie's husband, Paris loved driving for us when we went out of town

and we planned to hire Tony as a "Consulting attorney" the way we used to do Nelson before he became a member of our firm..

Olivia never wanted this job to become between anyone's relationships..And now that all of "her girls" were married now..She aimed to keep it that way if we had an out of town assignment.

''Auntay look, that's the guy who was on Television last week, the guy who savaged Lt. Tragg "said Beverly..

''Yes, Dr. Colgate. His fiance and some guy she was having an affair with vanished six months ago."said Olivia.

Dr. Colgate and his Attorney , Stan Steinberg were having dinner at a table across from us.

"Yeah that's who the bones belonged to they found at the Lovers Lane."said Nelson.

"If he's smart , he'll leave town before Lt. Tragg gets on his case."joked Josie..

Our table exploded into raucous laughter...

"Damn Jo, you on a roll."laughed her husband, Paris.

"Jo, you are so crazy....I thought Bev was bad enough, but you're catching up with her."laughed Bresha.

"It must be hillarious working with two funny ladies."laughed her husband, Tony.

"It must be." laughed Chimanda.

"It's a regular three ring circus around here sometimes." I said, laughing..

Beverly and Olivia cracked up laughing...Aunt and Niece...They were so much alike at times.

So did Nelson...None of us knew then , that we wouldn't be laughing for long.

Almost on cue, Lt. Tragg barged in with a full tactical squad...

"HEYYYYYYYYY, what is this about ,you asshole?" asked an enraged Dr. Colgate as they converged on his table...

''ASSHOLE HUH?WELL TRY THIS ON FOR SIZE!"said Lt. Tragg who belted him in the stomach and punched him in the face...

Dr. Colgate collapsed on the floor in pain...

"UGHHHHHHHHHHHH!" he moaned.

"HEYYYYYYYYYY! I saw that, that's police brutality...You can't do that!" said his attorney Stanley

Steinberg..

"Oh yes I can..He's a double murderer....and he's under arrest....You his mouthpiece Stan?  You got a loser for a client."said Lt. Tragg, who pulled him up off of the floor and handcuffed him...

"Barrett Colgate, you are under arrest for the murders of Marilyn Corey and Justin Corley...You have the right to remain silent...Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law...You have the right to an attorney...If you can not afford one, which is highly unlikely, one will be appointed to you...Do you understand these rights as I am readin em to you? Sure ya do.. Take him away Boys." snarled Lt. Tragg.

"You stupid, stupid man...When I'm through with you , you'll be lucky to be a school crossing guard."snarled Dr. Colgate.

"YEAH? We'll see." snarled Lt. Tragg...

''Artie, you're wrong for this..You're way out of line buddy!"said Stanley Steinberg..

"See ya in court Stan." said Lt. Tragg, who gazed across the room and saw us at our table, having dinner..

He knew we had seen and heard the entire thing..

''CRIMMINY!" he thought..He hoped that we didn't somehow get involved in this...After all the guy has a lawyer.. Stanley Steinberg, he said to himself.

"That's the guy that was in Sam Mother's the other day...IS HE ALWAYS LIKE THIS?" asked Chimanda.

"Pretty Much!" sighed Beverly.

II-

"We have arrested the double murderer Barrett Colgate.  He apparently murdered his estranged  fiance and her lover and buried them at a lovers lane.  He even had the gaul to report her missing. Missing Persons worked tirelessly on this case for six months.. It was going cold until I got involved and ran down this cold blooded killer.  The streets are safe once again , thanks to me!" said Lt. Tragg.

to a large crowd of reporters outside of Central Booking.. He was wearing a new European tailored suit, every hair was in place.. He was manicured and wearing a fresh new cologne and heavy make up.. He was right out of central casting..

We sat at home watching the news conference..

"He sure loves to hear himself talk doesn't he?" said Alfreda.

"He does at that!" I said, shaking my head at his over dramatic delivery..

"There was no need for him to strike that man during that arrest...That was police brutality and if his lawyer calls for witnesses..I will certainly testify on his behalf." said Olivia, who was very angry.

"He's just mad because Dr. Colgate told the truth about him last week on HARD BOTTOM." said Beverly.

"Yeah, that's why he slugged him...He couldn't wait...He'd of hit him no matter what he said."said Nelson.

"Yeah, he's a piece of work...I almost wished we were involved in this case ,just to give the good Lieutenant fits."laughed Josie.

"His Attorney, Stanley Steinberg is pretty good..He lectured at Middleton Law School and I sat in on one of his trials, shortly before I came here to intern..." said Bresha.

"Yes, I know Stan Steinberg, He's a very capable attorney." said Olivia.

And at this moment at Central Booking in the Interrogation room nicknamed "The Fishbowl" by the detectives... Dr. Barrett Colgate sat stoic, refusing to say a word, but angry as hell.

He wanted to pound Lt. Tragg's face in..

''WELL MR. BIG MOUTH...Dunderhead huh? Biggest disgrace to the Philadelphia Police Department,

eh? ANXIOUS TO BE ON TELEVISION!" he said loudly and pounded his hand on the table.

"You are a stupid, stupid man!" Dr. Colgate repeated....

"WHYYYYY YOU!!!"snarled Lt. Tragg, but this time when he lunged at Dr. Colgate..

Dr. Colgate blocked both of his punches and was getting ready to sock him in the jaw..

When his lawyer, Stanley Steinberg's voice punctuated the air..

"HEYYYYYYYY!! HEYYYY! THAT'S ENOUGH!... You're wayyyyyy out of line Artie , Wayyy out of line...You're almost as bad as your Father and that Uncle of yours...I thought you'd be better..." he said.

Lt. Tragg was breathing heavy...

"I just have little patience for cold blooded killers is all." he said as he stormed out of the "Fishbowl" and slammed the door.

"I got you a Judge and an arraignment..Now sit tight..." said Stanley Steinberg...

ONE DAY LATER-

He found Judge Percy Reynolds...A Judge he knew didn't like Lt. Tragg, a Judge who had twice been arrested for murder himself by Lt. Tragg and twice exonerated..A Judge he knew would be friendly towards the defense.

A new Prosecutor, Leslie Chance was the Assistant District Attorney..she was very smart... She didn't have a lot to go on and she put up a limited argument...

Attorney Stanley Steinberg ,the old courtroom master paraded more than 50 charactor witnessed from the Hospital as well as former and present clients to assess to the charactor of Dr. Colgate, assuring the Judge that his client was not a flight risk..

Judge Reynolds set bail at $5000.00 dollars...

Attorney Stanley Steinberg wrote  a check for $500.00  and he and 

his client, Dr. Barrett Colgate walked out of the courtroom...

He addressed the Press..

"My Client, Dr. Barrett Colgate is innocent of these egregious charges and he is anxious for his day in court where he can be both vindicated and exonerated." he said.

We watched the news conference on Television at our office from our conference room while attending to other business.

"I told you Stanley Steinberg is capable..He got him out on bail." said Olivia.

"I swear,I sure wish we were involved in this." said Beverly.

"You just want to give Lt. Tragg a smack don't you?" laughed Nelson.

"I do too, to tell you the truth."said Josie.

Bresha just smiled..

"Be careful what you wish for." I warned as we continued to watch the news and hold our normal discussions.

We were having our bi-weekly meeting while discussing present, pending and resolved cases.

Alfreda and Rockland were in the kitchen..

Kissing and making out like two teenagers...

"SHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH, they'll hear us...Now just calm yourself down."whispered Alfreda in between kisses...

OUR DOORBELL RANG!

"OHHHHH WHO THE HELL IS IT?" asked Rockland angrilly... "It better not be Tragg!" he snarled.

"Calm down Horny Toad!" said Alfreda, who fixed her hair and her lipstick and answered the door.

"WELL HOW ARE YOU?" she said with a smile.

It was Assistant District Attorney Abby Williams

"Hi Ms. Alfredaaaa...I was wondering if Olivia and Beverly were in?" she asked.

"They sure are...I'll take you to them."said Alfreda smiling..

"HEYYYYYY, LOOK WHO IT IS!" said Nelson, who saw her first..

"ABBY!! Hiii Baby!" said Olivia, hugging her..

"Married Lady, How is Married Life?" asked Beverly...

"It is wonderful...Just wonderful...Thank you all so much for your gifts and your support for me." she said.

"Hey Lady!" I said hugging her...She had a very warm and round curvaceous body...

"Hi Abby!" said Josie, smiling and hugging her.

"Hi Abby!" said Bresha, also hugging her..

A month or so no one in this room could have imagined this scenario.. We had faced off against her in four bitterly and hard fought court battles..Three that resulted in hung juries...and the final which resulted in an acquittal for us.. We all finished that trial exhausted ,but surprisingly with no bitterness, we all had a new found respect for each other.

We next wound up representing her when she was accused and arrested by Lt. Tragg of Attempted murder of her then fiance, now husband..We were able to vindicate and exonerate her without going to trial.  Several meetings with the Judge and the Assistant District Attorney resolved the entire matter.

''So...Is this a social call?" asked Olivia.

"Partially, but I also need a favor from you guys....I know that you like everyone in the entire city has heard that Dr. Barrett Colgate has been arrested.. I know him... I know him very well. He's my gynecologist..He has been for about five years..He's very good.. But more than that..He's a friend and I know in my heart he's not a murderer." said Abby.

"You want us to intervene on his behalf?" I asked.

"He's got a lawyer, a very capable lawyer...Stanley Steinberg..." said Olivia.

"I know....He's very good, but Stanley hasn't tried a criminal case in about ten years..He's taught law and he's handled a few non-courtroom litigations..but nothing like this.. He could use some help..Me being an Assistant District Attorney, I can't help him at all."said Abby.

"I'll call Stanley and offer our services if he wants them...Naturaly we can't force him..but if he is willing to work with us..We'll gladly get involved.. For one thing, We didn't like the way Lt. Tragg libeled and slandered one of our clients, who had nothing to do with this and the other..."said Olivia looking at her staff of young attorneys, including her niece.

"My guys are ready to jump on this already." she said.

Abby smiled..

"If they are as tenacious as they were when you guys faced off against me.. Dr. Colgate has nothing to worry about.

We all laughed.

III-

The Law Office of Stanley Steinberg...

They had picked up two grilled hot dogs a piece and some chips from a local hot dog vender..

Dr. Barrett Colgate's office was down the hall from his lawyer, Stanley Steinberg..They had been friends for close to 20 years...Stanley Steinberg had represented him in malpractice law suits and other matters..He had taught law at Middleton Law School and Drexel School of Law ..but hadn't actually tried a criminal case in 10 years..

Dr. Colgate spoke his concerns to his lawyer and good friend.

"Stan, you've been my lawyer for 20 years...I appreciate everything you've ever done for me. This case is a little different, a little heavy...Are you ready for this? " he asked.

 

"These are realistic concerns Barry and to tell you the truth....I could use a little help on this case...A lot.. I'm rusty." said Attorney Stanley Steinberg.

"Any ideas?" asked Dr. Barrett Colgate.

"I do... Your case is very similar to the case of Richard Graves..I happen to know that Olivia Bennett-Alexander , Beverly West and company were furious about Lt. Tragg slandering their client and trying to draw him into this when the bodies were first found before they were identified.. I'm thinking they would love to get some good old fashioned revenge on Lt. Tragg for that and I'm thinking they have experience with this type of thing.. Here look at the dossiers on them.." he said as he munched on his second hot dog and passed him the dossiers..

Stanley Steinberg looked at his watch.. It's 4:00 pm, Too late now...I'll call them first thing in the morning and set up a meeting for us both." said Stanley Steinberg.

Tender was the night..

"Donnie Ray, Attorney Stanley Steinberg sent me a text.. He wants a meeting tomorrow. I told him noon would be fine and to bring lunch. I told everybody they could come in late tomorrow. "asked Olivia..

"Looks like we are going to be a part of this case anyway.....I had a feeling we would be.." I said.

Taking her in my arms and kissing her passionately.....

"I divorced well...My first husband was a very successful corporate litigator, I bought this property lock stock and barrell and furnished it wit my money from the divorce..and I still had money left over for working capital which compounds as you know..My niece and her husband

Brought a load of clients on retainer when they joined me,along with the ones I brought and that gave me the money I needed to hire additional staff

Like my Husband, a retired Homicide Detective, Our in house investigator and attorneys,

Josie Boyd and Bresha Billips, and our office manager, Ms. Alfreda Johnson." said Olivia.

"You Guys are very impressive...You're pieces of a dream. That's why we want to work with you."said Attorney Stanley Steinberg..  "And one of your attorneys, Mrs. Billips..Formerly Bresha Williams was my student at Middleton Law School." he said ,smiling at Bresha.

Bresha smiled.

"As promised we brought lunch for everyone.."said Dr. Colgate.

He brought a tray of 10 hoagies..Even one for Alfreda...

And Cokes..

"Now let's sit down and eat and determine how to make old Lt. Tragg cry..."said Stanley Steinberg.

We all burst into laughter.

An Unmarked police car silently pulled off..It had been across the street.. Lt. Tragg was not in it and it hadn't been spying on us. He had plain clothes guys following and documenting the moves of Attorney Stanley Steinberg and Barrett Colgate.

It was reported to Lt. Tragg that both men were seen ordering Italian and Turkey Hoagies in Center City and driving to Olivia and Beverly's office/duplex for an afternoon meeting.

Lt. Tragg was in Curleys some hours later when he got the news..

"I KNEW IT!! I KNEW IT!! I KNEW SOMEHOW OLIVIA AND BEVERLY WERE GOING TO ATTACH THEWSELVES TO THIS CASE!!! Anything that's a little bit controversial they attach themselves to...WHY? WHY? WHY THE HELL COULDN'T THEY LEAVE THIS ALONE?" he snarled.

''According to the news conference, Stanley Steinberg went to them and he took food..You can't blame them for this Artie."laughed Curly, who was amused by how triggered he became over these attorneys who were just doing their jobs.

Attorney Stanley Steinberg and his client, Barrett Colgate adressed the media with us in tow.

"We have entered into a partnership with Attorneys Olivia Bennett-Alexander, Beverly West -East, Josie Boyd, Nelson East ,Bresha Billips, my former student and Investigator extroidinaire, Donnie Ray Alexander. Because of this team's sterling record as trial attorneys, They will be running this case. I'll be assisting..We hope to totally exonerate my client." said Attorney Stanley Steinberg.

"I have complete faith in my legal team... I am only sorry that a certain Police Lieutenant that loves being on Television more than he loves actually doing his job has created this hysteria surrounding this case.. He has no proof whatsoever of anything concerning this case. He is just looking for a photo op." said Barrett Colgate.

Olivia, Beverly, Josie, Nelson, Bresha and I said nothing and answered no questions, We just stood there with our client and the attorney who would also be working with us.

At Curley's Bar, Lt. Tragg watched the entire news report at the bar and seethed with anger..

"DO YOU BELIEVE THIS?  THE MAN HAS A LAWYER AND HE GOES AND HIRES THEM AND IS ALLOWING THEM TO RUN HIS CASE? WHAT A WEAKLING!" he bellowed.

''Actually, I think he's smart."said Assistant District Attorney, Leslie Chance, who happened to be sitting two seats down. "He hasn't tried a criminal case in a decade...He feels over his head, so he hires experienced trial lawyers to help him..That's smart.. Plus this case mirrors one of their cases, Richard Graves..That was a smart choice.," she said.

Lt. Tragg smiled and moved next to her..

''We'll have to agree to disagree on that baby..What are you drinking?" he asked.

"I'm fine..This is my third Martini." she said.

as she sipped her drink.

It was as if she hadn't said a thing.  Lt. Tragg ordered another drink for her.

''Another Martini Curls."he said.

"You didn't listen to a word I said...In fact you don't listen much to anybody, do you?  You didn't listen to the M.E.'s office when you went public with completely non-factual information about those bodies.

You slandered Olivia and Beverly's client who as it turns out has nothing to do with this...You just don't listen..But you're going to listen to me now.. I need more information on the circumstances surrounding this case.. I'm not going up against that legal team looking like a fool and get your hands from under my skirt.." she said and finished her drink and got up and left without drinking or paying for the drink he ordered.

Lt. Tragg sat there stone faced.
