VENTURES: A Kiss Before Conviction

Inside the Judges Chambers at the Bayside Courthouse, Deputy District Attorney Corado Stall was kissing a female bailiff.

"AWWWWWWWWWW...AWWWWWWW LAWD! RHONDA ,I'VE GOT A BONER FOR YOU THAT WON'T QUIT!" he moaned...

Their kissing got more passionate...

"Corado...OUUUUUUUUUUUU YOU'VE ALWAYS GOT A BONER THAT WON''T QUIT...But we are going to have to cool it for now...I've got to get dressed....I'm due in court...Stopppp!" she said as she broke his embrace...

"You're not supposed to be in here anyway while I'm getting dressed." she said.

He looked at her as she stood in her bra and panties and slipped on her uniform skirt and blouse..and fixed her hair...

and applied her lipstick.

"Call me sometimes when you have some free time..." she said and left the chambers..

"Oh I will." he said with a smile...

He straightened his suit up and took a disinfectant wipe and removed her lipstick smudges from his lapel and his face.

He had no intention of ever calling her... He had called Sylvia several times and her phone had gone to voicemail.. He had dropped by her office and she wasn't there...Had even stopped by her apartment and again, she wasn't there.

He wondered if she was intentionally avoiding him.

He angrilly looked at the subpoena he was given by two of Yvette's young attorneys...

Sofia and Beatrice....They caught up to him as he was trying to leave the Restaurant two nights ago and served him..

It was bad enough they had sprung Curtis Sellers...but they now had him subpoenaed to testify on his behalf.. How ironic...he thought!

At this moment we were all in a coffee shop ,down the street from the courthouse...

Yvette bought coffees over to the table where we all were sitting..

"Ohh Thank you...I imagined I'd be coming to court in handcuffs and chains...This is nice..."

said Curtis Sellers.

"We thought you'd like this better, I mean who wouldn't?" I said , smiling..

"Me and Sofia subpoenaed poor poor Corado Stall two nights ago." said Bee Bee.

"You should have seen the look on his face when Bee Bee and I walked up to him..." said Sofia.

"Now he knows we are serious about your defense...bad enough we made bail and got you out...but now HE has to testify on your behalf.."laughed Kahlil..

"Oh I know he sure wishes some hapless Public Defender was on this case."laughed Sofia.

At this moment, DDA Corado Stall was addressing the press outside the courthouse-

"I find it reprehensible that I have been subpoenaed by the defense to testify on behalf of this killer, this man who killed my beloved wife....OH MY GODDDDD!! I LOVED HER SOOOO MUCH...OHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!" he cried out breaking into tears and being comforted by female reporters..
"This is just a stunt by Big City Philly lawyers to grandstand...That's all it is... .OH MY GODDDDD!! I LOVED HER SOOOO MUCH...OHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!" he cried out breaking into tears again.

It was very melodramatic!

II-

TRIAL DAY-

"ALL RISE FOR THE HONORABLE JUDGE MALCOLM FORTUNE!" said the Bailiff..

"Be seated...Today we are hearing case 405...Commonwealth of Pennsylvania vs. Curtis Sellers,

Charged with First Degree Murder..."said Judge Fortune...

"We Will start with introductions of attorneys." he said.

"Assistant District Attorney Sylvia Lively your honor, representing the commonwealth your honor."said Sylvia.

"Yvette Jones Lockwood, Lead Attorney for the Defense Your Honor." said Yvette...

The Defendant ,Curtis Seller sat next to Yvette...He was stoic...

"Keith Jones, Attorney for the Defense Your Honor.." I said.

"Beatrice Jones ,Attorney for the Defense your honor." said Bee Bee.

"Sofia Garcia-Ahmed, Attorney for the Defense your honor.." said Sofia.

"Kahlil Ahmed, Attorney for the Defense your honor..."said Kahlil..

Jade sat quietly with us...

"All right...We'll have voir dire..." said Judge Fortune...

Sylvia had done a little research...I could tell by her questions...but she hadn't done enough...

Kahlil and I took her apart like surgeons...

and with our understudies , Bee Bee and Sofia sitting behind us on their laptops, feeding us information and question... It was no contest...We got a 10-2 split, including the jury foreman...

Sylvia had been totally outclassed and what's more, she knew it! She stared at Yvette.

Yvette sat back and smiled serenely...

"Allllright, We have a jury....Trial begins tomorrow morning at 9:00 am sharp...Jurors and Attorneys be on time and be ready for trial Court is dismissed..." said the Judge..

"Get a good night's sleep Curtis..."said Yvette...

"I will and thanks again for everything.." he said.

"So the trial began today huh?." said Yvette's husband, Gary...

"Actually it begins tomorrow. We picked a jury today....My kids did pretty good...They got a 10-2 split...I was so proud of them." said Yvette.

"You made them, you molded them into great attorneys." asked Gary.

"I am so fortunate to have them working with me...I'd hate to lose any one of them." said Yvette..

"They aren't going anywhere, they love you....almost as much as I do.."said Gary.

"Ouuuuuuuuuuu nice to know.." said Yvette, smiling.

"You know I'm crazy about you.." said Gary, half joking.

"UMMMMMMMMMMM YOU'RE GOING TO GET SOME TONIGHT" said Yvette.

"I HOPE SO!! said Gary.

"Come on over here and get some of this."laughed Yvette.

"Well Alrightttttttttttttt!"said Gary as they began to kiss..

"OUUUUUUUUUUUU HUSBAND." she laughed as their kissing got more intense..

The Trial began-

Sylvia began with her narrative that Curtis Sellers , the personal assistant to Judge Abigail Lewis Stall had begun to feel stringer about her then he should have and when she rebuffed his advances...He killed her in a fit of jealous rage.

She showed the jurors huge glossies of her dead body at the riverfront with 15 stab wounds...

She presented 10 witnesses who testified that they sometimes thought that Sellers and Mrs. Stall were "Too Close"

Bee Bee and Sofia compared their original statements to the statements they were making now...They didn't match and they got them all to admit their opinions were based on heresay and not actual facts..

Not one of them saw a kiss or any inappropriate behavior on the part of Mrs. Stall or Mr. Sellers.

Sylvia objected to some of the questions , accusing them of badgering the witnesses...but they just smiled and reframed the same questions in a different way....

Sylvia's frustration was clearly showing..

Yvette and Curtis Sellers sat and smiled serenely.

Kahlil and I presented people from the Medical Examiner's Office and The Crime Scene Investigation unit...They all admitted that Neither Mr. Sellers DNA or His Fingerprints were found at the scene of the crime at all and that they believed that Mrs. Stall was killed somewhere else and brought there.

This was all during the Prosecution's case...We hadn't even presented our defense yet...

Deputy District Attorney Corando Stall sat in the visitor's section steaming...Yvette's attorneys were harpooning whatever case Sylvia had built....They were clearly outclassing her and Yvette hadn't said a word yet...He was very worried at this point.

Sylvia soldiered on as best she could....but it was very difficult to press her case....There just wasn't any proof of an inappropriate relationship or any evidence placing him at the scene of the crime which up until now hadn't been identified..

She had wasted two days of the Jury's time.

Yvette began her defense.

She talked about Curtis Sellers life , as a lettered athlete in Basketball and Track, as an A student in High School...

He began working for Judge Abigail Lewis -Stall as her driver, he moved up to her administrative assistant and pretty soon as her personal assistant, with a room at their house...

She called a Private Investigator forth who showed the jury photos of Corado Stall's fancy loft and he entertaining several females.

Sylvia looked shocked and then angry at the revelation...

Yvette presented two witnesses who testified that The Stalls often had loud arguments that lead to Corado being put out of the house because of reports of his indiscretions and in the weeks before her death, she had contacted attorneys about divorce.

I showed old paperwork drawn up that showed there was a 1.2 million dollar life insurance policy that Corado was privy to upon his wife's death...

Sylvia showed a 1.5 million dollar life insurance policy that Mrs. Stall was supposed to get upon Corado's sudden death...

Kahlil showed the jury the GPS trail of Curtis Sellers on the day of the murder....He wasn't even in Bayside, but in Philadelphia most of the day and his credit card and debit card purchases proved he didn't enter Bayside until late that night, after the time, The Medical Examiner's Office said Mrs. Stall perished.

Yvette called Corado Stall to the stand....

He was very nervous......

"Mr. Stall ,when was the last time you had sex with your wife?" She asked.

"That's a very personal question counselor." he snarled.

"ANSWER THE QUESTION COUNSELOR!" said the Judge...

"I'll answer the question for him...It was the day she died... See you left semen in her body and your saliva on her bra straps..... We know because we got a sample of your DNA and sent it to the Medical Examiner's Office and they got a 99.9 percent match to you....

Yvette showed a photo of his home...

My investigator went to your house and used luminol....Her husband is a Philadelphia Police Detective..

"The Luminol revealed blood splatter on the ceiling and on the wall on the ceiling and in the hallway...

There was a smell of bleach everywhere...A strong smell of bleach...

There were no bedsheets or pillowcases on the bed.....but a huge blood spot on the bed brought out by the luminol... YOU KILLED YOUR WIFE DIDN'T YOU DDA STALL, DIDN'T YOU?" asked Yvette.

"I refuse to answer on the grounds that this may be self incriminating. I would like to speak to legal counsel." said Corado Stall.

"That's a good idea...The Defense rests !" said Yvette.

"In view of the preponderance of evidence....The People move to drop all charges against Mr. Curtis Sellers." said Sylvia. She was not going to go on with a losing case...She was totally disappointed in Corado and her behavior with him..

"The Defense concurs...."said Yvette..

"So Be it! Mr. Sellers, you are free to go....Bailiffs take Deputy District Attorney Corado Stall into custody!" said the Judge.

Corado Stall broke into tears as he was handcuffed, read his rights and lead out of the courtroom.

"YESSS! YOU GUYS ARE THE ABSOLUTE TRUTH!" said Curtis Sellers, a free man at last...

"You are free and Saturday, I want you to join me and my friends.." said Yvette.

"I know you're glad to be free." I said.

"I gotta call my mom and my aunt." said Eric Sellers ,grabbing his phone

"Awwwww that's sweet." said Bee Bee.

"Yeahhhhh!" said Sofia.

"Like Ms. Yvette said.. We were down earlier ,but certainly not out." said Kahlil.

"Looks like we won the war afterall."said Jade.

Yvette walked over to Sylvia.

"Come to gloat Yvette?" asked Sylvia.

"No Sylvia..."said Yvette who passed her an envelope.

Inside was photos of her and Corado kissing in the restaurant and the negatives with them.

"Do with them what you like...I have no use for them..." said Yvette.

"YOU KNEW? You could have used these photos to have me thrown off the case and censored possibly...You could have destroyed me, but you didn't.. Why?" asked Sylvia.

"You've been through enough...I wasn't trying to hurt you...I was just trying to free my client and get to the truth... Corado is a very attractive and enticing man, You got caught up...It could have happened to any young woman....Be careful and use better discretion in the future....You're a fine attorney, Good Luck!" said Yvette.

"THANK YOU YVETTE!!!...THANK YOU SO MUCH! I TAKE BACK EVERY BAD THING I EVER SAID OR THOUGHT ABOUT YOU...YOU'RE ALRIGHT!" said Sylvia.

"You're not so bad yourself " said Yvette, smiling!

IV-

SATURDAY-

As promised, Curtis Sellers, newly freed, met with all of us in our favorite restaurant in Bayside...

"WOWWW! This was so nice, sitting here with the guys, drinking brews and watching Baseball and Basketball, waiting for you ladies to come back." said Eric Sellers.

"I'm glad you had a good time...Your mother called me last night and thanked me profusely."said Yvette.

"We had a good time here too!"said Gary.

"Let's order some food, I'm famished."I said.

"Ouuuuuuu so am I." said Bee Bee.

"Me too...we got any menu's here?" asked Sofia.

"Right Here.." said Kahlil...

"I see you've met Detective Bonneville." said Jade.

"We worked a case together a few years ago." said Danny Ho.

"You guys did a good job...I never thought Sellers was the guy, which is why I didn't press him...That Deputy District Attorney blocked me and my men every step of the way..Your guys did a fantastic job of getting to the truth."said Detective Frank Bonneville, who joined us.

"Yeah they do good work."said Danny Ho.

"I'm happy it's over and for a little while, they'll be back in the office."said Virginia.

"I was keeping you company." said Jetty...

"Yes you did..." laughed Virginia.

''So you're Olivia Bennett-Alexander, I've heard so much about you, from my former attorney...She said you two were room mates in law school." said Eric Sellers.

"Yes, we've been like sisters ever since we were room mates in law school. We live across the street from each other."said Olivia.

"Pass me a menu...Let's see what's good here."said Donnie Ray...

"End of a long week huh Honey Bunny?" said Beverly..

"Yeah, we won a case and Yvette and her guys won a case..Looks like we'll all have some free time for awhile." said Nelson.

"Yeah, me and you can have some alone time.."said Josie to her husband...

"I'm greatly looking forward to that." said Paris.

"Come to think of it...I am...let me see what they've got here." he said.

"So, Yvette and Curtis are going to be on your show next week, You happy?" said Karen.

"I'm ecstatic!"laughed her husband, B.L.

"I know Yvette's Mother is so proud of her daughter and happy for her."said Natalie.

"Yeah, she asked for a favor and got it!"laughed David.

"That's a nice feeling...I wish she had come out with us." said Brooke.

"Yeah but if she had, We'd of had to be on our best behavior...We couldn't talk nasty."joked Sean.

Renee and Tyrell cracked up laughing.....

And so did Lee and Matthew...

"Well, once again, we are having a great time..."laughed Nina.

"They love it when we come out and practically take over their establishment...

"Eric, This is our friend, Toni Robinson...She's an Attorney as well." said Yvette.

"Hello." said Tony...

"Well Hellllllllo!" said Eric Sellers, looking her up and down. He noticed she didn't have a wedding band on.

"Hi" she said nervously giggliing...She noticed how he was checking her out from head to toe...

Eric couldn't take his eyes off of her.....

Sitting across the Bar from us was Deputy District Attorney Corado Stall. He had managed to make bail and be released, pending a trial.. He looked at us and angrilly seethed...

He called Sylvia for the 17th time and for the 17th time her phone went to voicemail... She wanted nothing to do with him.

EPILOUGE-

Corado Stall was tried and convicted of First Degree Murder, He was disbarred and sentenced to Life.

The Night before he was to surrender and begin serving his prison term,

He was found hanging in his loft! A Suicide!

CURLEY'S BAR- TWO WEEKS LATER-COUPLES NIGHT!

"Always nice coming out for couples night.....I've missed a few of these..."said Yvette, snuggled up with her husband..

"I know...It didn't seem right without you here.."said Gary..

"Hopefully our next case will be here in Philly." I said.

"Here Here.." said Bee Bee

"I'm all for that...Bayside is nice...but on weekends when we are shopping and roller skating."said Sofia.

"Yeah for real...It's a nice place...but in moderation." said Kahlil.

Jade cracked up laughing...

"It was nice seeing ole Frank Bonneville...I've got to tell Sissy and the guys I saw him." said Danny.

Virginia leaned over and kissed her husband, Jetty...

"I'm so glad you guys are finished with that case and are back!" said Olivia, hugging her best friend..

"Back to normalcy.."laughed Nelson, hoisting a drink..

"Somehow this feels like a homecoming." said Josie.

"Well this weekend, we just might go someplace else...Nelson says he's pondering a trip to the beach." said Paris.

"Ouu that would be nice.."said Bresha.

"It's still a little cool, but we could bring heaters." said Tony.

"Yeah that would be nice...Not like we haven't gone down there once in the winter.."said Alfreda.

"We'd break out the party tents.."laughed Rockland.

Our friend, Attorney Toni Robinson and recently exonerated client, Eric Sellers were sitting at a table not far from us...Staring into each others eyes and laughing, while enjoying drinks..
