Elegy For Sunny

One week later- The Funeral of Sunny Hopkins-Trainor...

The church was packed..

Greg Garland had come up from Atlanta to attend the funeral..

He had his young girlfriend, Shawn Richards with him...We hadn't seen her in two years...Most of us were glad they were still together. 

 Yvette was in tears... "Poor Sunny...She shouldn't have gone out like this...She was doing big things...She was in the prime...Her prime..." she said through tears.

Her Husband Gary held her...

Keith Jones had his arms around his wife, Bee Bee.

She was crying so hard, her body was shaking.

Sofia was crying so hard her body was shaking...

Her husband ,Kahlil was holding her....

Jade stood stoically...

So did her husband, Danny Ho.

Virginia shed a few tears....

Her husband, Jetty held her tight. 

Olivia was crying profusely....The first time anyone here who knew her saw her crying like this.

 

Donnie Ray held her tightly, rocking her back and forth...

Beverly didn't like seeing her aunt this upset. She was sad.

So was Nelson...He hadn't known Sunny, but the one time he had been in her company...Ironically, the night she died...He had thought she was a nice woman.

The same was true for Josie and Paris...They hadn't known Sunny, but the one time they had been in her company...Ironically, the night she died...They both had thought she was a nice woman.

Bresha had met her before...She had sent her resume to her law firm in Bayside shortly before she took the Bar exam...

Her husband Tony  had also met her before...He had sent his resume to her law firm in Bayside shortly after  he took the Bar exam...

Alfreda felt bad for Olivia....She walked over to her and hugged her, trying to comfort her...

So did Rockland....

"This is just awful.....I think we should all go to Aqua Bar after this is all over." said Jazzy...

"I'm down....I so missed all of you since the last time I was up here." said Shawn Richards...

 

"Yeah , we missed you too!" said Dabnis.

"Nice seeing you again Shawn." said Kayla.

"Yeah...glad you two are still together." said Ray.

"I think Aqua Bar would be in order." said Jessica.

"Yeah." said Chip.

"You youngins go on to Aqua Bar...We are going to Josie's." said Karen.

"Yeah they're  having a little set over there in the upstairs lounge we were all at." said B.L.

"Oh that sounds nice....Maybe we'll all stop by after Aqua Bar." said Natalie.

"Yeah, maybe we'll do that."said David.

"I don't feel like dancing...I think I'll have a few drinks.." said Brooke.

"Yeah, me too!" said Sean.

"This is a sad occassion....I knew Sunny..."said Zoey...

"Yeah, me too!" said Lem.

"Yeah, Aqua Bar will be nice." said Renee.

"Yeah it will" said Tyrell.

"I didn't know any of you guys then...but I think going to Aqua Bar afterwords will be nice." said Lee.

"Yeah, A Nice Respite..."said Matthew...

"Ohhh you've added some new friends to your group since I was last here." said Shawn...

"Yeah we've made a few changes...."laughed Nina..   "I've gotten married." she said.

"Oh wow and to a hottie...Congratulations."said Shawn.

Carlos smiled..

Also at Sunny's Funeral was Regional Director of the FBI/ATF, Sharon Hopkins And her husband, Detective, Tony Hopkins....She and Tony  had both graduated with Olivia, Yvette and Karen and taken and passed the bar and knew Sunny.

"WOW!  Poor Sunny..."said Sharon..

"If only we could've helped her." said Hop.

They carried the coffin out of the church and to the hearse.

Everyone followed the procession to the cemetery...

AQUA BAR- THURSDAY NIGHT

It wasn't a regular Thursday Night...No one was at Curley's for couples night and no one had worked today! Everybody decided to have a quiet night out at Aqua Bar. It wasn't Taco Tuesday, so there was no D.J.'s spinning...Just people drinking and talking..

"Olivia is letting Greg and me stay at your place in your sub-basement apartment while we are up here." said Shawn..

"Oh that's great!!!!!.. You can join us for Brunch on Saturday Morning and our trip to Bayside for shopping and Dinner." said Beverly.

"I don't think we'll be working tomorrow...So You all can have breakfast with us and just hang out." said Nelson.

"I heard Michael's Brother claimed his body and had him cremated..." said Jazzy...
 

"Did  they flush his ashes down the toilet?" asked Dabnis....

"Dabnis? Stopppppp!" said Kayla.

"That's Cold Blooded , but I understand..." said Ray...

"WOW!  What a tragic ending...for both..."said  Jessica.

"I wish we had had some type of clue...Could've had an intervention."said Chip.

"Yeah, that might have helped..."said Keith Jones..

"It would've maybe avoided the double tragedy.."said Bee Bee.

"Yeah, I know." said Sofia,.

"Nobody ever expects something like this to happen..A Murder-Suicide...Who could know?" said Kahlil.

"Kahlil is right...We didn't even suspect that there was trouble in the marriage that night...Everything seemed to be alright."said Natalie.

"Nah, he didn't look too happy...He seemed in a funk the entire night."said David.

"Yeah he did...He didn't talk much to anyone...He just ate..."said Brooke.

''Everybody's success reminded him of how far he had fallen from grace." said Sean.

"Yeah, Expelled from City Council, Let go by a prominent law firm, practically unemployed .." said Renee.

"And Facing Divorce....."said Tyrell.

"He was about to be homeless, out on the street in a few days." said Paris.

"I know, but none of that was new to him...Something must have set him off."said Josie.

"I heard he had downed a bottle of wine....So he probably was drunk and with all the other factors...It lead him to load his pistol and kill his wife and himself." said Tony.

"UGHHHHHHHH!" said Bresha...

"Hi...My name is Shawn and you are?" asked Shawn...

"I'm Lee Phillips-Ake, I'm an Attorney at the Women's Law Center...I work down the street from all of them...I work with Nina and Carlos...And this is my husband, Matthew Akes..."said Lee.

"I'm Matthew Akes, an Attorney with the Innocence Project...I work with Jessica and Chip." said Matthew.

"OUUUUUUUU...and You have an accent." said Shawn, smiling... "I like it." she added.

"I was born in Nigeria...My parents brought me here to America when I was two...I just recently got my U.S. citizenship.."said Matthew..

"Ohhhhh okayyyy cool...How bout you Lee?  You born somewhere else too?" asked Shawn.

" Nope..."I'm home grown, born and raised here in Philadelphia...."said Lee with a smile.

"Okay, that's cool. I was born and raised in Miami, Florida. I currently live in Atlanta with Big Head."laughed Shawn...

More Martini's and Tacos arrived...

They helped ease everybody's solemn mood.

Everybody else met at Josie's in the upstairs lounge...

Olivia had finally composed herself...She sat with her husband's arms around her......

 

"It's nice seeing you and Shawn again Greg." said Donnie Ray.

"Same here...Thank you and Olivia for letting us crash with you this weekend..We are leaving Sunday." said Greg.

"Oh it's our pleasure...We always like company."said Olivia.

"Nice seeing you again Gregory....I haven't seen you since law school." said Sharon.

"I know right.?  Nice seeing you too Sharon and Hop....Good Move going back to law school and finishing up...Congratulations Man.."said Greg Garland.

"Thank you...I went to Drexel's Thomas Klein School of law and got into an accelerated course and finished up my last year.  Then I passed the bar. said Hop.

"Good Deal..Good deal..You still a Detective?" he asked.

"Yes , I am." said Tony Hopkins.

"Greg, you and your lady friend can join us for breakfast tomorrow morning... "said Alfreda.

"Thank you." said Greg.

"I don't think I'm going to work tomorrow."said Rockland.. 

 "We are only working a half day, tomorrow, then I'm cutting everybody loose." said Yvette.

"Jazzy and Dabnis told me they are cutting their people loose after lunch too!" said Yvette.

"Rockland told me I could have the day off...He's calling out too!" said Gary.

"What a day this has been...Usually we are at Curley's for couples night."said Jade.

"Yeah, but nobody was up to it tonight."said Danny.

"I know they miss us tonight."said Virginia.

"They miss our revenue." laughed Jetty.

"And how are you Karen...?" asked Greg.

 

"I'm doing well Greg...You're looking well." said Karen...

Neither Yvette, nor her husband, B.L. knew about the two nights in law school that she and Greg had slept together..She always felt guilty about that because she knew Yvette and Greg had been sleeping together...Yvette always said that she and Greg were no more than "Friends with Benefits.",still she felt guilty sleeping with him on the side...

B.L. sat silently...saying nothing.

"I heard that Michael's brother claimed his remains and had him cremated... "said Zoey

"There was no memorial service?" asked her husband, Lem.

"No....he was cremated and his brother kept his ashes in an urn...No memorial service at all."said Nina.

"Wow!" said Carlos...

"I don't want to talk about him."said Olivia.

"I don't either..." said Yvette...

"That makes three of us." said Karen...

They were angry that Michael had killed their good friend...

Greg laughed... "You three...Joined at the hip...Just like in law school." he said.

"They sure were ." said Sharon and the entire room lightened ...and laughter abounded...

A few plates of Whipped burrata, prosciutto and whiskey soaked cherries arrived for them..

along with cold mouth watering drinks....

It was a nice way to celebrate Sunny's life...All of her friends together in the last room she was in..

By Two thirty, everybody out of Josie's and  was tucked away with their significant others in their homes......

 And in Olivia's sub-basement....

Greg Garland and his girlfriend Shawn prepared to bed down....

"You have a good time tonight lover?" asked Shawn.

"I wouldn't say ah a good time...We just talked and had some drinks...but it was nice seeing my old law school friends..." said Greg...

"Same here...but I love being around Beverly, Josie, Bresha , Jazzy and Kayla and Natalie, Brookie and their friends and spouses... All my age and younger...I can relate....and even your friends, Ms. Olivia, Ms. Yvette are pretty hip.....Not what I expected when you first brought me up here...I expected some old, fat middle aged white men.....You've got some pretty young and hip friends...Male and female..."said Shawn.

"This is some spread you guys have here...Have I been here before...?" asked Greg Garland.

 

 "Not with us....I don't think! Take it easy before you drop all of that.." said Yvette.,laughing.....

"We've been coming here for two or three years though...It's a great Brunch spot on Saturday Morning." said Gary..

"Oh so they don't do this every day huh?" said Greg..

"Oh No...They don't open until 5:30 pm daily... " said Keith Jones.

''We eat our meals across the street in our building cafeteria. Monday through Friday."said Bee Bee.

"Then on Saturday Mornings...We come here.." said Sofia.

"I've seen your uh Cafeteria in your building...That's a five star restaurant..."laughed Greg.

''We can give you and Shawn Building passes so that whenever you're in town you can eat with us." said Kahlil.

"Olivia and Beverly and her crew all have building passes and so does Nina, Carlos and Lee and Sean, Brooke's husband...They don't work in our building." said Jade.

"Yeah and Gary and I and Rockland have those building passes too."laughed Danny.

''We keep it in the family...and you're like family now." said Virginia.

''We all kind of are..One big happy family."said Jetty..

Shawn whispered to Jazzy...

"Keep this under your hat Jazmatazz...but the next time you see me...I may be a married lady...Greg told me that he loved me and asked me to marry him....It was during sex..but I think he meant it." she said.

Just then ,Greg stood in the middle of the floor and took a spoon and clinked an Empty Mimosa Glass-

"HEY YALL I GOT AN ANNOUNCEMENT TO MAKE....TWO ANNOUNCEMENTS....One, You may be seeing a lot more of me... I am looking at a job offer...I was in talks with Sunny to help run her firm in Bayside before the tragedy....Now that she's gone...I think I will be moving back here to run her firm in Bayside...As you know, I have a house there that I'm renting.and the second most important thing.. I'm getting married.. I've asked Shawn to marry me two nights ago and I think she will.. I don't think I'm being too presumptious.." said Greg.

"I'M THE WHEELER DEALER? YOUR HUSBAND IS THE WHEELER DEALER LIV, INVESTIGATOR, MUSICIAN AND JEWELER...I'M GONNA TAKE YOU UP ON THAT DONNIE RAY!"laughed Greg.

"I'll give you a good deal...Ask all of the guys here....I got them their rings." said Donnie Ray ,smiling..

"Oh I believe you brother..."laughed Greg.

"OUUUUUUUUUUUU HONEY!  YOU GOT HIM!!CONGRATULATIONS!" said Beverly , hugging

We loaded up the buses after brunch and headed for Bayside and their great shopping centers..

We had dinner and drinks at a tony steakhouse in Bayside....

And ended the night with some roller skating!

 

PHILADELPHIA INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT- SUNDAY MORNING!

"Well, it was a tragedy that brought me up here...but as usual...You guys showed me and my girl a good time anyway....We'll be back in a few months...God Willing....Thanks for the hospitality Olivia, Vettie, Karen, Thank you all for everything..."said Gary, hugging Olivia, Yvette and Karen who came to see them off at the airport..

Olivia, Yvette and Karen...His girls for life.

"Byyyye Yall and thanks for everything..." said Shawn, who hugged Olivia, Yvette and Karen...

"Have a safe trip you two!" said Olivia.

"Yes, have a safe trip and we can't wait for your return." said Yvette.

"Yes...Enjoy! We'll see you in a few." said Karen.

Their plane arrived and they departed... These last few days were a true elegy for Sunny...She would have wanted her friends and former classmates to celebrate and have a good time and not mourn her too hard.
