The Trunk

 GAZSPACHOS- Philadelphia's elite restaurant and bar...Lunchtime!

"WOWWW AUNTAY!... GAZSPACHOS...I've been hinting to my husband to take me here ever since Renee and Tyrell went here two years ago....Never thought the first time I'd go would be with you....Thank you." said Beverly, celebrating her birthday...

"Yesssss thank you Cousin Liv...Now Ray has got to bring me back here.."said Kayla, whose birthday was the day before.

"Nothing's too good for my two favorite girls.." said Olivia.

She was treating her niece, Beverly and her first cousin, Kayla, born a day apart , days after her ninth birthday to lunch at this tony eatery to celebrate all three of their birthdays...

The two women had been like her little sisters for as long as she could remember...and they both followed her into careers in law... with Beverly being her partner and Kayla working for a successful law practice,helmed by Jasmine Coley, whom she had mentored and who had been Beverly and Kayla's friend since ninth grade...

"Ouuuuuuu the perfect thing to wash this food down with." said Beverly..

A Citris Martini arrived.

"Ouuuuuuuu My Favorite." said Kayla.

A lemon drop Martini arrived..

"Like I said...Nothing is too good for my girls." said Olivia with a smile..

Sitting in a corner across from them was Assistant District Attorney , Fred Rawls.. He had recently lost in court to Olivia and Beverly....but he didn't hold that loss against them... He lived by the rule..Win Some, Lose some, appeal the rest and move on... He had however blamed Lt. Tragg for a faulty investigation... Complaints that led to Lt. Tragg spending weeks on the Marine Boat..

Something Lt. Tragg hadn't forgotten or forgave...

Fred Rawls was admiring the three women... especially Olivia..

Thinking.."That husband of hers is a lucky man...."

and looking at Beverly and Kayla and thinking... "Her two nieces aren't so bad either.."

He walked over to where the three women were sitting..

''Well Hello Olivia.. What's the occassion? Or just having lunch?" he asked.

"We are celebrating our birthdays....Mine was a few days ago...Kayla's was yesterday and Beverly's is today... I was treating them..."explained Olivia..

"Oh? No Husbands?" asked Fred Rawls..

"No this is girls only....We are having a big birthday bash tomorrow at Curleys with our husbands and all of our friends." said Kayla.

"Ohhh I see... Must be nice Olivia having two nieces in the law proffession..."said Fred Rawls.

"I only have one niece in the law profession.. Beverly. Kayla is our cousin..." said Olivia.

"Ohhhh Artie Tragg told me you had two nieces...Like everything else..He got it wrong!" said Fred Rawls  and the four of them busted out in gales of laughter...

"Well Happy Birthday to the three of you...Enjoy...!" he said as he returned to his table.

"You know...At first I didn't like him...but he's not so bad.."said Beverly.

"I guess he's not.." said Olivia.

''Everybody seems nicer once you're out of the courtroom."said Kayla.

Later that afternoon... Fred Rawls was retrieving his automobile from the valet..He noticed his trunk was open...

He popped the trunk, only to see the body of a woman...A woman who had been strangled..

"WHAT THE HELL?" he exclaimed...He fell backward and clutched his heart..

"OHHHHHHHHHH...OHHHHHHHHHH..OHHHHH MY GODDDDD!" he exclaimed and passed out.

An Ambulance rushed him to the hospital!!!!

II-

CURLEY'S-THE NEXT NIGHT...

Olivia spared no expense she threw herself and her niece and her cousin a big birthday bash that included all of their friends..

There was Three Big Birthday Cakes....

And enough cold cuts and condiments and rolls to make several sandwiches...

 

"This is the best...Thank you everybody for coming out..."said Olivia.

 

"HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO MY TWO BEST GIRLS!" I said hugging both Olivia and Beverly... I owed them both so much. They had welcomed me to their world here in Philadelphia and introduced  me to all of their friends.

"AWWWWW THANK YOU DONNIE RAY!!" said Beverly,almost in tears...

"HAPPY BIRTHDAY BABES!" said Nelson..

Beverly rewarded him with a sloppy kiss...

"Happy Birthday to my favorite women...I owe you two so much.."said Josie.. Olivia and Beverly had given her a job and had put her through law school...

"Happy Birthday..." said Paris.

"Happy Birthday Olivia and Bev, I love you both."said Bresha.

"Happy Birthday ladies."said Tony.

"I LOVE YOU TWO...YOU BOTH KNOW THAT!" said Alfreda hugging her daughter, Beverly and 

Olivia, the little sister of Beverly's father, who was like a little sister and a daughter to her all wrapped up in one..

"LOVE YOU TOO MOMMY!" said Beverly, hugging her mother..

"LOVE YOU TOO FREDA!" said Olivia.

"HAPPY BIRTHDAY LADIES!"said Rockland.. 

 

And of course Drinks were plentiful... 

 "It's a celebration...HAppy Birthday to my best friend in the whole wide world and her niecey poo, who is like my neicey poo too!"said Yvette ,hugging both Olivia and Beverly..

"Love you too Vettie!" said Olivia.

"Thank you Ms. Yvette.."said Beverly.

"HAPPY BIRTHDAY LADIES!"said Gary..

"This party is a blast...Happy Birthday yall."said Keith Jones.

"Happy Birthday Liv and Beverly." said Bee Bee.

"Happy Birthday Liv and Beverly." said Sofia.

"Happy Birthday Liv and Beverly." said Kahlil.

"Happy Birthday Liv and Beverly." said Jade...

"Happy Birthday Ladies."said Danny..

"Happy Birthday Liv and Beverly." said Virginia.

''Yes Happy Birthday Liv and Beverly." said Jetty...

Jazzy hugged Kayla..

"And Happy Birthday to my best friend in the whole wide world....Kayla Baby!" said Jazzy.

"Thank you...and have some cake...." said Kayla.

More drinks arrived as did more guests..

"HAPPY BIRTHDAY OLIVIA, BEVERLY AND KAYLA." said Cassidy...

"HAPPY BIRTHDAY OLIVIA, BEVERLY AND KAYLA." said Kyla Pratt.

"No Way I was gonna miss Beverly and Kayla's birthday bash."said Natika, who hadn't been in Curley's in months.

"HAPPY BIRTHDAY LADIES!" said Deputy District Attorney Lester Burke..her significant other.

Toni Robinson was there....and so was Serendipity and her boyfriend Kevin..

"DIPPITY DOOO...YOU MADE IT!" said Kayla.

"No way I was gonna miss you and Beverly's Birthday party." said Serendipity.."

"Glad you both could make it...Pull up a seat...have some cake..There is plenty of food left and plenty to drink."said Beverly.

"Just the way I like it." said Kevin laughing.. "HAPPY BIRTHDAY LADIES." he added.

Across the Bar, another more sinister conversation was going on... There was loud laughter...

"Oh My God Artie...you shoulda seen his face when he popped the trunk and saw that body in there...It was lifelike I have to admit..  He grabbed his chest and fell backwards...I wasn't expecting that...

My guy ran over and pulled that dummy out of the trunk and got rid of it..I nearly urinated on myself I was laughing so hard..."said Jimmy Tragg, Lt. Tragg's cousin,.

"I'm glad you filmed it with your phone and sent it to me...I laughed so hard...I nearly collapsed...That jerk...This was better than I expected... I didn't know he had a bad ticker though.."said Lt. Tragg, who had engineered the car trunk debacle of yesterday...

"Where did you guys get the dummy from?" asked Private Investigator Bert Vandenberg ,who was sitting with them..

"They use it in the academy....To instruct recruits how to conduct the beginning of a homicide investigation...I'm surprised he didn't recognize it.."laughed Jimmy Tragg.

"He didn't have a heart attack...He had a slight heart emergency....He was released from the hospital this morning... He's home resting...He's supposed to be out the rest of the week." said Bert.

Lt. Tragg laughed ruefully....

"What's going on over there?  They got three cakes and sandwich meats and plenty of drinks." said Jimmy Tragg.

"Looks like it's somebody's birthday..."said Bert Vandenberg.

"Those guys are always celebrating something."said Lt. Tragg.

"Here comes your chickadee."said Jimmy Tragg..

Judge Kelly Ann walked in...

"Well Boys...I'll be talkin to ya...Thanks again."laughed Lt. Tragg as he and Kelly walked to their usual corner.

Later that night....

We were all home, We had had an incredible birthday celebration at Curleys...Practically all of the food had been gobbled up...and there was only half of one cake left over..A Very successful night..

It had been a balmy 70 degrees tonight.. A Nice warm night in early Spring.

Olivia and I retreated to our bedroom...

"They didn't find a body when they checked my car ." I heard.

"No Blood, No DNA, No Fingerprints....I don't think a real body was in your trunk..Sounds like it was a lifelike dummy..the kind they use at the academy...I checked all of the dummies..No fingerprints, No DNA and no record of any of them being checked out.."said Ingrid Stevenson.

"Clean...Too Clean..That means a cop was behind it.. Some cop pulling a practical joke on me..."said ADA Rawls...

"You know any cops that might have it in for you?" asked Ingrid Stevenson..

"I know two.....Arthur and Jimmy Tragg...I got both of them assigned to that Marine Boat for months...but they are both as dumb as a box of rocks...They wouldn't have the know how to pull off something like this...and the cops I know who are pretty smart are cops I have a pretty decent relationship with...Speaking of which...I heard you got a restraining order against your boyfriend..or former boyfriend..Is that true?" asked ADA Rawls.

"It is...and my present boyfriend and I are on the outs...He moved his things out of my apartment and we haven't talked in weeks.. I'm kinda on a haitus from men right now."said Ingrid....

"Sorry to hear that....Hey it's Friday....You goin to Curley's..I'll buy you a drink..." said ADA Rawls..

"Okay...Thank you!" said Ingrid as they walked out...

She walked over to her car....There was a ghastly smell around it and the trunk looked like it was open..

She popped the trunk open.. Only to see the body of her last boyfriend, the one who had moved out..He was bound and gagged...and blue..

"WHAT THE HELL?" she exclaimed...

"OHHHHHHHHHH...OHHHHHHHHHH..OHHHHH MY GODDDDD!" she exclaimed 

"PEEEEEEEEEEE YOUUUUUUUUUUUUU" this body stinks... He's been dead awhile."said a CSI man...

"This man has been dead for at least two days...Rigor has set in.."said Dr. Hazel Baylor..

"My goodness...The smell is incredible.."said Dr. Marcy Martin.

"His drivers License said he is  Jason Horsey..." said one of the Homicide detectives..

"This is my ex....but I assure you, He hasn't been in my trunk for two days...I don't know how he got in my trunk.."said Ingrid..

"His body has been frozen...or he wouldn't have kept this long." said Hazel.

"Ingrid...I'm afraid you're going to have to come with me... Hazel, Marcy Bag that body and tag it and impound her car."said Lt. Tragg,

The nearly mummified body was put in a white body bag, strapped to a gurney and wheeled to the street where an ambulance awaited..

Her car was impounded 

and towed away....

"Tragg we know her...We know she's not capable of anything like this...Come on now!"said ADA Rawls..

"I'm the Detective here Fred....I make the calls." said Lt. Tragg.

Frederick Rawls whispered in Ingrid's ear....

"Don't say a word... Call Olivia and Beverly....They're the only ones who can get you out of this mess." he said.

Ingrid thought about us.. and all the times she'd worked with attorneys who were going up against us...

 

including Fred Rawls....She knew if he was recommending us...He must be on to something...

She looked us up... We were the attorneys she needed. We were the attorneys she was going to call.

As she pulled off with Lt. Tragg.
