It was the day of the preliminary hearing.. We decided to have breakfast in the courthouse's cafeteria. It had been remodeled after a year and under a new management contract..It looked great..
The food was good too.....and it was a great way to avoid Lt. Tragg, since he had his meals at Sam Mother's Diner.
"If this works out...This could be a very short trial folks.." he said.
''We'll hang ADA Baronski with her own witness.." said Josie.
''Winning this one and using her own witness is going to be the most unkindest cut of all." said Olivia.
Judge Martika Anderson walked in...
Hoagie walked in...He saw us eating breakfast and smiled..
"Hey guys....I just dropped by to wish you all good luck in todays hearing..Do you know that hussy tried to get me to recuse myself from this trial because she found out that you once clerked for my father so many years ago....Tried to say that I was too close to the defense.. I didn't let her get away with that...I held my ground and the High court ruled in my favor..Needless to say she didn't take it too well..Said she was going to file an appeal.. Let her.. Just do what you guys do..and stay within the bounds of the law." said Judge Anderson...
"Well...looks like you guys are ready...I'm too nervous to eat.." he said.
''Well I'm not..Let me grab some pancakes.."said his longtime partner, Attorney Keith Ross , who was going to be assisting us in his defense..

On Cross, Nelson asked the Crime Scene Investigators and Forensic Specialists as well as the detectives that despite finding the Pill bottle that belonged to Franklin Carmaichel at the scene, did they find any other piece of forensic evidence, a fingerprint, DNA ,anything that put Franklin Carmaichel at the scene.? All of them answered relectantly "NO" Score one for the defense.
Josie ,using witness statements given to police and made to me...asked all of the people that lived in the apartment complex who testified, if they had seen Franklin Carmaichel in the apartment complex that day or any other day for that matter?
Olivia had fought successfully to have most mention of the Bridgerton Corruption Trial cut out of this trial and discussion be limited to the murder only...
ADA Baronski began her argument.. She called the Crime Scene Investigators, Forensic Specialists, Detectives on the scene, and people who lived in the apartment complex...She looked as though she had a very airtight case at first...but looks can be deceiving. She didn't think we had much if anything to question.
All of them answered that they had not! Score two for the defense..
ADA Baronski could not believe it...Olivia's two little underlings had destroyed the case she was building..
She had been close to destroying the murder victim Steve Hough, when he was on trial for corruption...Now he was dead and the corruption she was about to expose had been taken off the table..
"Let's go to Curley's Arthur." she said.

They sat back as though their work was done...Today was Olivia's show...
She noticed how relaxed Beverly, Nelson, Josie and Keith Ross looked.. She knew that today they wouldn't be taking part in anything, today she'd be up against Olivia..This was the moment she waited for..a rematch with one of two attorneys who had beaten her..
Lt. Tragg looked smug, confident..and as pleased as punch...The past three nights he had been having some of the most passionate sex of his life with Diane..
Lt. Tragg had insisted that "his testimony would all but bury Carmaichel" The Two men had become friends during the proceedings.
Attorney Jeff Walker took the stand...He looked smug...Gleeful almost.. To be driving the stake in his long time rival's heart..

Uh I have seen Mr. Carmaichel in court for years pull stunts that were quasi legal to win cases...and he has trained a generation of attorneys who engage in the same kind of theatrics and stunts...Such as his defense attorneys, Mrs. Olivia Bennett -Alexander and her niece, Beverly West to name a few..Well his lawlessness has finally caught up with him and I intend to run for the empty States Attorney seat again.." he said..'
''But this is just your opinion...You don't like my client...It is a known fact...You aren't going to testify to anything pretaining to the murder are you? Your sole purpose for testifying is to drive a stake into the heart of his reputation, isn't it? You didn't personally witness my client do anything, DID YOU!" asked Olivia..
"I knew Steve Hough...We were colleagues...In his last days...He was afraid...He was breaking down..In fact as I said."Breaking down? That's a nice way to put it..The man was on the verge of a nervous breakdown...He was about to name names...of people who helped him fix a trial involving the late gangster, Rollie Fingers..Naming names like Franklin Carmaichel, (we thought at the time..though we now know that he did not..)like former Judge Mathis , saying that he and Carmaichel both conspired with him to fix a juror, and a cop, who may have manufactured evidence in that case...I realize now that in the federal trial, Carmaichel wasn't named..but he thought he might be..It resulted in Fingers being acquitted and it resulted in the Judge being paid a hefty sum....He left the bench right after the trial and a year later , He and Sam Hough were both Counsel and Co-Counsel for the Bridgerton Investment group....a nice pay off huh? As soon as he named Carmaichel as a co-conspirator, He would have been done . This was the reason I believe he killed Hough...Turns out he did it for nothing..Hough didn't name him."said Jeff Walker, laughing smugly..
Beverly and Josie showed enlarged photos of Jeff Webber with both Judge Mathis and Steve Hough engaging socially.
I have here in the audience, Retired Detective, Edward Jeffries, who is prepared to testify that you were Rollie Fingers bag man and that you paid him to testify in that trial....
I also have the Juror, who says you and Judge Mathis approached him about his testimony...You both told him to either vote not guilty or to hang the jury.." said Olivia.
ADA Baronski was horrified, she couldn't believe how south this interview was going..She only meant to use Jeff Walker as a charactor witness, he wasn't even central to the prosecution and here he was destroying the case she was trying to build.
She tried to do damage control by vigourously objecting...Saying that he was not on trial..
"I would like to hear his testimony."said the judge..
ADA Baronski stared balefully at Lt. Tragg, How could she have listened to him? Him of all people??
Olivia continued...
"This sir is the police report My partner filed the week before saying that his wallet was stolen ,containing $500.00 in cash , a credit card and a debit card...as well as this bottle of his heart medication found at the scene...
Lt. Tragg was as red as a beet..
Both men, Detective Jeffries and The Juror stood up and then sat down...It had taken me awhile to track down Jeffries and the Juror, but I had and Beverly and Josie had served them both subpeonas...I was lucky they were both still in the general area.
"My client did have a hypothetical conversation with Sam Hough about how to proceed, but that was the gist of it..He wasn't worried about Sam Hough naming him....YOU WERE WORRIED ABOUT HIM NAMING YOU!!" said Olivia..
This is a photo of the pickpocket trying to use his debit card...He was picked up by the cops and he tells an interesting story....He says YOU PAID HIM TO LIFT THE WALLET, WHICH YOU LET HIM KEEP and the heart pills..which he says YOU POCKETED! Interesting story, wouldn't you say?"said Keith Ross..
"I'm willing to call ten of the people who lived in Sam Hough's apartment complex..They never saw our client..but they did see YOU..They identified you from these photos and they are prepared to testify."said Nelson.
"But no need for that...These Traffic Cam Photos shows YOUR car speeding away from his apartment complex the night of the murder, just ten minutes after this autopsy report reports the time of Death."said Beverly..
"My client didn't visit Sam Hough that night..YOU DID!! and you dropped those pills on the floor purposely for the police to find, to frame him...Didn't you Mr. Walker.?.. Not to mention, you called poor Judge Mathis and told him to clear all of his records out of his condo and told him we were on the way there to question him, which triggered his unfortunate suicide...It wasn't my client...IT WAS YOU! I have the phone record to prove it! "said Olivia.
"BAILIFFS!!! GET HIM THE HELL OUT OF HERE!!! READ HIM HIS RIGHTS AND TAKE HIM TO THE COOLER! In light of these developments the court moves to drop all charges against Mr. Carmaichel.."said Judge Anderson..
"I don't believe this...They didn't even put up a defense...They destroyed my case with my own witness.."said ADA Baronski...This was the unkindest cut of all.. Tears streamed down her face..
Lt. Tragg bristled with anger over that last remark as the reporters laughed raucously......He stomped his foot and walked away...Angered at losing the court case and ADA Baronski all in one afternoon..
"Damn it...YES IT WAS ME!! YES I DID IT!! I DESREVED THAT STATE'S ATTORNEY SEAT...ME...ME...I DESERVED IT!!! THAT STUPID STEVE HOUGH WAS GOING TO RUIN EVERYTHING....HE WASN'T GOING TO NAME CARMAICHEL...HE WAS GOING TO TELL THE TRUTH AND RUIN EVERYTHING!!!! I HAD TO SHUT HIM UP!!!..HE WAS FALLING APART, GETTING DRUNK EVERY NIGHT!!! TALKING TOO MUCH!! I HAD TO SHUT HIM UP!!! DAMN IT!!! I HAD TO SHUT HIM UP!!! DAMN IT!!!!!! DAMN IT!!!" snarled Jeff Walker..shaking and crying profusely...
"I don't believe this...This is twice that they've bested me in court..TWICE!!!! DAMN IT!! THAT IDIOT LT. TRAGG BROUGHT ME ANOTHER BAD CASE....DAMN IT!!!" she cried..
"Yes you did...I am sooo sorry, sooo sorry... Jake...I need you to hold me..I need to stay with you tonight."she sobbed as he took her into his arms..
Lt. Tragg's mouth hung wide open...He couldn't believe it.....She had just been with him for the past three nights and here she was kissing this guy passionately and leaving out the side entrance with him...
"I don't believe it." said an astonished Lt. Tragg..
"Mrs. Beverly West-East...Who will always be "Babygirl" to me.. I've known her too since she was a fresh faced law school graduate who had just passed the bar..
Josie Boyd, their protoge' , who they are bringing up the same way I brought them up...
and come over here Donnie Ray....Olivia's husband, Donnie Ray Alexander...a better investigator than the Homicide cop who busted me.." laughed Hoagie...
"I tried to tell you Diane..You wouldn't listen to me or take my calls..He was toxic...When they heard you were going to use him they were salivating..I didn't know about all the evidence they had on him, but I heard how they were laughing in Sam Mother's diner when they heard he was going to be a witness..I tried to tell you.."said Jake..
They kissed passionately...
"Sure Baby!" he said and looked at Lt. Tragg and smiled sheepishly
I walked over to him....
"Women..Who can figure em huh?" I said..
The Press surrounded us...
"I told you guys I was totally innocent.. That this was nonsense.. A jealous former colleauge out for revenge..."said a jubilant Hoagie... "Hey ,I owe my freedom to my brilliant attorney, 
Mrs. Olivia Bennett-Alexander, who I've know since she was a wet behind the ears law school graduate who had just passed the bar and her brilliant staff..
Her husband, Nelson East, who I met when he was a young Public Defender, just two years out of law school
Hoagie continued.
Hoagie took us all out for dinner to show his appreciation for our sterling and successful defense..
"Mine too...I thought you would like it.."said Hoagie.
"Ummmmmm Delish! " said Beverly
"Now Josie...You know why they call him Hoagie.."laughed Olivia.
Josie laughed ..
"Leave us alone..we are having a nice afternoon.."said Beverly..
"Honey Bun, chill..."said Nelson..
Josie didn't say anything..
"ARGHHHHH!." he said and pulled out his bottle of Irish Whiskey and walked away..
"Do you care Liv?" asked Hoagie..
Last but not least...My law partner..My ride or die, Keith Ross, he put it all together..Love you man, keep my seat warm.. Get somebody good to fill it...Yes, My law firm will continue." he said..
"Thanks Buddy..I will." he said..
The Press snapped photos of us and applauded...
Lt. Tragg chose to avoid the Press, he exited out the side door..He had nothing to be interviewed about..
EPILOUGE-
Attorney Jeffrey Walker was disbarred and convicted of First Degree Murder and sentenced to Life.
Hoagie forgave Lindsey Green and she was hired as an Associate Attorney at his law firm.
She is no longer seeing Jake Patais.
He would soon be headed to Harrisburg to be States Attorney...
We wound up at a place we hadn't been in awhile..The Brewery...
"Haven't been here in awhile..but Hoagie...This is my place.." I said..
As A tray full of Steak Hoagies were delivered to our table..
"Here come our drinks."said Nelson..
Beers
"Oh My Godddd, he's soused and he's seen us.."said Olivia.
and Martinis...
What a great night of celebrating..
"Oh Noooo, Can we go nowhere and not run into him?" said Beverly, who saw him first..
Lt. Tragg was as drunk as a skunk...He saw us and walked over to our table..
"WHYYYYYYY...WHYYYYYYYY Do you have to ruin every major bust that I MAKKEEE?
WHYYYYYYYYYY???" he cried out..
"GET AWAY FROM OUR TABLE!! GET AWAY BEFORE I CALL THE MANAGER!"said Hoagie..
"Just ignore him Hoagie..."said Olivia, rubbing his arms..
I didn't say anything...
He took one last swig ,tossed the bottle in the trash and left...
"Think he's going to be alright?" asked Olivia..
"He'll be fine...Nothing ever happens to pests."scoffed Beverly..
We all broke out into loud laughter after Beverly said that!
