Another Dead Crow

 Trial Day-

"Coffee everybody!" said Daniel Bristol...

"Get it while it's hot!" said  Alexa...They had gone and gotten coffee for us...

 

Olivia pulled out a disinfectant wipe and wiped the lipstick smudge off of Daniel's face..

"Wow...You really like her don't you?" she said, smiling.

"I've never met anybody quite like her Aunt Olivia. I think I'm in love." said Daniel, who was clearly in love.

 

"WOWWWWWWW!  I think she feels the same." said Olivia...

"Thanks for the coffee guys." I said.

" Alexa , You and Daniel huh?  You two make a cute couple." said Beverly.

"I think I'm in Love Bev." said Alexa Pratt.

as she reapplied her lipstick...

"AWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW!" said Beverly, hugging Alexa.

"You ready for trial?" Nelson asked our client...Eddie Lee.

"I'm more than ready to get this thing over with." said Eddie Lee, who accepted his coffee.

"Thank you!" he said.

''We are ready to give you a very robust defense.."said Josie.

"Lt. Tragg's case is weak...Nothing new or surprising there...but it's based on a personal vendetta."said Bresha...

"Look who our Prosecution team is.." said Nelson...

Our Former client, Assistant District Attorney Gary Smith

and his second chair, Casey Rourke, a very good prosecuting attorney walked by us...

"Our old friend, and our former client, Gary Smith...Interesting.."said Olivia.

''And Casey Rourke...She's very good... but so is he...I guess he saw all of us and wisely decided not to go it alone."said Beverly.

Lt. Tragg walked in...He glared at us angrilly without saying anything...

"Wonder who the Judge is?" asked Josie..

"You think it's Kelly Ann?" asked Bresha..

"I'm betting it's not..." I said.

COURTROOM C-

The Judge was Gloria Bridell-Holmes....

She had been the Judge in Yvette's last case and had been forced to recuse herself when it was discovered that she was having an affair with Assistant District Attorney, Sean Holmes..

Now her husband.....

She glared at Lt. Tragg, who had been responsible for exposing her and her now husband's affair..

He was angry because her and her husband's complaints about him had earned him a two week stint on the Marine Boat...There truly was no love lost between them...

"ALL RISE FOR THE HONORABLE JUDGE GLORIA BRIDELL, DOCKET 706 ,PEOPLE OF THE COMMONWEALTH OF PENNSYLVANIA VS. EDDIE LEE ON TWO CHARGES OF FIRST DEGREE MURDER AND ONE CHARGE OF CONSPIRACY!" she said.

"Be Seated , Be Seated... Good Morning Attorneys and Potential Jurors..I am Judge Gloria Bridell...

I'm new here and I don't know any of you...So let's start with Attorney Introductions..."she said.

"Representing the Commonwealth, I am Assistant District Attorney Gary Smith your honor." he said.

"Also Representing the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania... Assistant District Attorney Casey Rourke.." she said. 

 "Lead Attorney for the Defense, Olivia Bennett-Alexander your honor."said Olivia.

"Co-Lead Attorney for the Defense, Daniel Bristol, your honor..."said Daniel.

"Attorney for the Defense, Beverly West-East your honor." said Beverly...

"Attorney for the Defense, Nelson East your honor..." said Nelson.

"Attorney for the Defense, Josie Boyd Your Honor."said Josie.

''Attorney for the Defense, Bresha Billips, your honor."said Bresha.

"Attorney for the Defense, Alexa Pratt, your honor.." said Alexa..

"You I do remember...You were with Yvette Jones Lockwood's team in the Holden Louden Case..."said Judge Bridell..

"Yes your honor, I was..." said Alexa.

"My, you must be in high demand!" said the Judge with a smile...

I sat with our client Eddie Lee.

Eddie Lee sat stoically...

Lt. Tragg grumbled.. "Olivia, Beverly, Nelson, Josie and Bresha are bad enough, but she's got her Nephew and his girlfriend in on this too, and it's in front of THIS JUDGE....The fix is in.." he snarled.

"Okayyy! We'll begin with Voir Dire.." said Judge Bridell.

Assistant District Attorney Casey Rourke was smart and better prepared this time than she was three years ago when we faced her in court..

But Nelson was just as smart and just as prepared...

With Josie and Bresha behind him with their laptops, full of information and whispering questions to him...It was almost like he was cheating..

Still it was no walk through the park.. Nelson got a narrow 7-5 victory over her.. with the Jury Foreman being one of her picks..

"OUTSTANDING...We have a jury....The trial will begin tomorrow at 9:00 am sharp....Attorneys and Jurors be on time and be ready for trial.. Court is dismissed." she said..

 

Judge Kelly Ann Mercer was standing outside the courtroom...

"Arthurrrr I'm back!" she said..  She had been in Atlanta for a Judges Conference for the two weeks he had been on the Marine Boat and the past week he had been off..

"VA VA VA VOOOOOOOM! YOU LOOK LIKE A MILLION BUCKS KID...." he said ,looking her up and down..

"Did you miss me? I missed you..." she said.

"Oh My God....I'm so horny I can't think straight..." he admitted.

''Well I'll take care of all that tonight..." she said and smiled....

They began kissing.....

"And that's all that ailed him...Kelly Ann was out of town.."said Olivia.

 

''She was in Atlanta for two weeks at the National Judges Conference." I said.

"Ohhhhhh that's why he's been his old unhinged self...Well I'm glad she's back."said Beverly..

''So am I" said Nelson.

"Me too!  She soothes the unhinged beast."laughed Josie.

"How did he get so lucky and get a sweetheart like her for a girlfriend?" asked Bresha.

"They say every dog has his day." said Beverly...

"And he's a mutt!" said Eddie Lee.

We all laughed...

"Come on...Let's go to Sam Mothers and have breakfast..."said Olivia..

"Hey where is Danny and Alexa?" asked Nelson..

"They'll catch up with us.." said Josie.

Daniel and Alexa were already out on the street...

"I made reservations for you and I , Thursday Night at Gazspacos..." said Daniel.

Alexa's eyes got as wide as saucers.. "OUUUUUUUUUU! Are you serious? Oh My God!!!"said Alexa. She had heard of the Tony Restaurant and had wanted someone to take her there for the longest time.

"Yes I'm serious..."said Danny.

''What did I do to deserve a wonderful boyfriend like you?" asked Alexa, just smiling broadly.

''Well those D-cups helped..."joked Daniel, looking at her breasts...

"Oh hush up silly!"laughed Alexa , swatting him playfully as they walked toward Sam Mother's Diner.

ADA Gary Smith began his argument- It was the same synopsis I myself had given to our group just a few weeks before-"Ladies and gentlemen of the Jury, the Defendent, Eddie Lee portrays himself as a simple businessman...The owner of a very tony ,award winning restaurant in Chinatown as some of you may know...but he has a more sinister background..For the past 10 years...Eddie Lee has owned and run one of the premiere Chinese Restaurants in Chinatown...It's an award winning establishment..  He also runs a floating crap game on the top floor above his restaurant...Asian ,Russian and African-American underworld figures meet nightly for drinks and games of chance....Poker and what not...The Police have known about it...but they've turned their backs on it..Why? because Eddie Lee has kept that area quiet...No Protection Rackets, No Loan Sharking, No Drugs and thus no violence...But recently he was getting a little push back from two people, A Russian Mobster named Mikal Beresknakov and an Asian Gangster named Shang Hai...Eddie Lee was trying to negotiate with them when both men were murdered a few weeks...Eddie Lee swears he had nothing to do with it... but we know better"he said and showed the jury photos of the two murdered men,  Mikal Beresknakov and Shang Hai. with Eddie Lee at different times.. " he said.

 Olivia argued that seeing him with the two murdered men did not make him a suspect in their murders..

She argued that in his line of work, Eddie Lee met with several different people a day and that it was wrong to argue guilt by association..

Beverly argued that Mikal Bereskanov , although an alleged Russian Mafia Figure was in the Real Estate Business and was attempting to buy some prime real estate in the Chinatown area...

Nelson argued that Chinese Gambler Shang Hai wanted to build a rival casino in the Chinatown Area and was having a problem with the City Zoning Board.  He wanted Eddie C. to intercede on his behalf.

All of which was backed by records taken from Eddie C.'s business office.

But Casey Rourke argued that this was all a front...That both Mikal Bereskanov and Shang Hai

were gangsters...both known Loan Sharks with convictions for extortion from the past...

Josie argued that though they both had prior convictions, they were from more than a decade before and neither man had been arrested or in any trouble since then...They both appeared to be legitimate businessmen...

We were saying this, but even we knew this wasn't exactly true..

Bresha argued that whatever their past or record was...It had nothing to do with Eddie Lee and did not prove he had committed murders...All good Points.

Gary Smith produced three witnesses who testified that Shang Hai was pressuring Eddie Lee for a piece of his Gambling Action and had partnered with Mikal Bereskanov to buy real estate to build his casino..

Daniel and Alexa questioned them as to how much they knew about the negotiations...Not much, as it turned out and asked if they had heard any threats made by Eddie Lee at any time against any of the men. They did not.

Olivia, Beverly and Nelson showed the jury a list of  Eddie Lee's phone calls and emails... Ironically enough none of them were to Shang Hai or Mikal Bereskanov.

''Eddie Lee is too smart, too shrewd to conduct business on the phone or through email...He had face to face meetings outdoors.."said Casey Rourke.

Josie and Bresha demanded proof of these charges...There were no Street Cam videos of any such meetings they argued..

Judge Bridell ordered a halt to the argument between Casey Rourke ,Josie and Bresha. It was getting very contentious and going nowhere..

"He conducted business on the phone or by text and email with everyone else? Why not these two?"argued Alexa. Mentionimng the numerous zoom calls and zoom video meetings Eddie Lee had

"Because this was purely illegal. Those other calls were not." argued Gary Smith...

"And what is illegal about a meeting with the Zoning Board and two interested parties?" argued Olivia..

Eddie Lee's nephew, Shai Youn sat in the courtroom and smiled..  It was now Thursday and neither side had proven anything...but he had to admit..Olivia ,Beverly and company had done a good job presenting more than reasonable doubt.

 He wasn't laughing when he was called to the stand...

"You were your Uncle's right hand man...His second in command in the business.."said Daniel.

"Yes you could say that" he said.

"Did you have any dealings with the two murdered men?"asked Danny...

"No I can't say that I did." he said..Starting to squirm..

"These are YOUR Phone records....You made 17 calls to Mikal Bereskanov in the past three weeks leading up to the murders and 12 calls to Shang Hai...a few on the same day....I think you knew them."said Nelson...

"This is a photo of you and Shang Hai , taken from your Uncle's Video footage from his restaurant, the day before the murders..." said Bresha....

''What are you trying to say?" asked Shai Youn...

"Just that you knew these two men and that you had meetings with them that your uncle didn't know about.. I think we've proven that...The defense rests."said Olivia.

"Alright Jurors  it is now on you to decide if this man is guilty or innocent... You can find him guilty of Two counts of First degree Murder and Conspiracy or just one count of conspiracy.....Study the facts of this case and remember, do not discuss this case with anyone else.. We will see you all tomorrow morning. Court is dismissed.." said Judge Bridell.

Eddie Lee stared daggers at his nephew... Apparently his nephew had been doing a lot behind his back...

He was livid..

Shai Youn slipped out of the courtroom quietly, deeply ashamed.

That night as promised...Daniel took Alexa to Gazpachos for dinner....The trial was over, it was up to the jury now....

"I hope you enjoy this night....It was timed just right..."said Daniel..

"Danny, This is lovely, Thank you sooo much for taking me here..."said Alexa..

The Rest of us were at Curley's Bar-Couple's Night- 

"Once again, you did a stellar investigation Donnie Ray...I'm certain we gave that jury enough reasonable doubt to swing things our way."said Olivia, hugging me.

 

"Oh yes, and I think we have an intelligent jury..." I said.

"Alexa and Danny are at Gazspachos tonight.."said Beverly...

"Oh wowww! This was a perfect night for it...The ending of the trial...I think we are going to get an acquittal." said Nelson.

"You haven't been wrong yet Nelson....I'm with you." said Josie.

"You guys worked hard on this trial..."said Paris.

"We always work hard on every case and come with receipts.." said Bresha.

"From what you told me, I'm pretty sure Eddie Lee and his nephew are going to have quite a conversation tonight..."laughed Tony...

"I hope not...I'm pretty sure they are being listened to if you know what I mean.."said Alfreda..

"Hopefully Eddie Lee has enough control to keep his head about him while the jury deliberates. "said Rockland. 

 "Alexa and Danny went to Gazpachos tonight."said Yvette.

Gary smiled..."You know what that means." he whispered to Keith Jones..

''A "Do Not disturb "sign is going to be on the door of somebody's room tonight."laughed Keith Jones.

"I used to put that on the door in our apartment when you and I were in the room together." said Bee Bee.

"Tee Hee, So did Kahlil and I...I'm so Happy for Alexa and Danny."said Sofia.

"Yeah, she deserved some happiness.." said Kahlil..

"I know she's going to be glowing tomorrow morning."said Jade.

"I Hope they make it to trial tomorrow..."laughed Danny..

"Oh Stop it...They will." said Virginia.

"Sheeeeeeet ,it might get real good and they might be asleep by the time daylight comes..."laughed Jetty.

"Alexa and Danny are at Gazspachos tonight.."said Jazzy...

"I think the deal has been sealed...before tonight." said Kayla.

"Gazspachos is very nice...I remember when we went there..."said Chip...

"Yes it's one of the most talked about eateries in the city.." said Karen..

"I remember when David and I went there too..It's very romantic and the food is very good."said Natalie.

"I remember after we went there..."laughed David..

''She repaid you real good didn't she?" laughed Brooke.

"Come on Bestie...Don't give him ammunition.."said Natalie..

"I don't expect to see my girl Alexa for at least a day or two.."laughed Toni Robinson who was with us tonight.

"You and I are going next Thursday....I can't wait to talk to the brother about the menu...and what to eat."said Eric.

''Gazspachos....I remember when you took me there...That's when I knew you loved me.."said Lee.

"You didn't know before that?" asked Matthew.

"Yeah I knew..."said Lee ,smiling and leaning her head on to Matthew's shoulders...

We hadn't returned from Curley's yet..but Alexa and Danny were back from Gazspachos..

"Looks like you already got it." said Beverly, taking  a disinfectant wipe and wiping the lipstick off of my face and my lapel.

"I couldn't help myself...He's irresistable..." said Olivia ,smiling as she applied her lipstick and passed the coffees to Bresha to pass out..

"Pass these out for me baby?" said Olivia.

"Got'cha Liv!" said Bresha... passing out the coffees.

''Ummm thanks....So how was last night?" Beverly asked Alexa..

"OHHHHHHHH IT WAS WONDERFUL...LIKE A DREAM!" gushed Alexa...

"SO I TAKE IT LAST NIGHT WAS GOOD HUH?" asked Nelson..

"So how was last night?"asked Josie...

"OHHHHHHHH IT WAS WONDERFUL...LIKE A DREAM!" gushed Alexa, echoing what she had told Beverly...

Eddie Lee stood stoically not involved in our conversations... Drinking his coffee...he wondered if he'd wind up in prison for the rest of his life or on Death Row..He thought we had done a credible job...but he worried about that jury...5 Blacks, 7 Whites...Not one Asian..Yes, he wondered about the jury....

In a corner, his hated enemy Lt. Tragg was busy kissing Judge Kelly Ann..

"I didn't get enough last night baby, I need some more...ohhhhhhhhhhh!" he moaned..

"OUUUUUUUUU ARTHUR.....YOU'll GET MORE TONIGHT...OUUUUU!" she cooed.

"The Jury is back with the verdict!"said the Bailiff..

COURTROOM C- 11:00 AM FRIDAY MORNING!

"Has the Jury reached a decision?" asked Judge Bridell..

"We Have your honor!" said the Jury Forewoman... She passed the sealed envelope to the Bailiff..

The Bailiff passed the verdict to the Judge.

She read it...Took a deep breath and passed it to the Bailiff...

"Alright will the defendent and his lawyers stand up.... Read the verdict.." she said.

Eddie Lee stood up....He glared at Lt. Tragg, who was responsible for this entire debacle..

Lt. Tragg was certain we hadn't done enough to properly defend Eddie Lee.. Certain that this time, we had lost.

Danny Bristol, Olivia, Myself, Beverly, Nelson,  Alexa, Josie and Bresha all stood..

 

 

COMMONWEALTH OF PENNSYLVANIA VS. EDDIE LEE  IN THE MURDER OF  Mikal Bereskanov, COUNT ONE, FIRST DEGREE MURDER-NOT GUILTY!

COUNT TWO- COMMONWEALTH OF PENNSYLVANIA VS. EDDIE LEE  IN THE MURDER OF  SHANG HAI, COUNT TWO-FIRST DEGREE MURDER-NOT GUILTY!

 Both of those charges carried a possible death sentence or life in prison... Eddie Lee had escaped that.

COUNT THREE-COMMONWEALTH OF PENNSYLVANIA VS. EDDIE LEE, CHARGE OF CONSPIRACY TO COMMIT MURDERS OF MIKAL BERESKANOV AND SHANG HAI...

WE FIND THE DEFENDENT- NOT GUILTY!

This charge carried a sentence of 10 years to life..

Eddie Lee was as free as a bird!!

Eddie Lee leaped for joy and sneered at Lt. Tragg..

"TAKE THAT YOU KEYSTONE COPPER...I'M INNOCENT!!" he snarled..

Lt. Tragg wanted to lung at him but was restrained by ADA Gary Smith...

 

"Don't you dare!...He's already thinking of suing the city because he said you harrassed him and his attorneys needlessly throughout the case..Just walk away...Walk the hell away.." said Gary Smith..

ADA Casey Rourke just shook her head...

Shew exited the courtroom as quickly as possible..

Olivia and Beverly leaped in the air and high fived each other...

"WHOOOOOOOOOOOOOO WEEEEEEEE!" they yelled joyously..

"Olivia, Beverly, Thank you so much....You and your friends are welcome to come to my restaurant and eat for free this weekend...Anything you want..."said Eddie Lee..

"THANK YOUUUUUU!"said Olivia, who took me in her arms...

And gave me a slow ,soft sensuous kiss..

Beverly and Nelson were over in the corner kissing...

As was Alexa and Daniel Bristol..

 

Newly freed Eddie Lee took Josie and Bresha by the arms and said.

''Since we are the only ones here not getting a kiss, how would you two beautiful young ladies like to go a few blocks to the Ice Cream Parlor with me and have a couple of Banana Splits, My treat?" he said.

"That Suits me just fine, how bout you Bree?" asked a smiling Josie.

"Lead the way Mr. Lee." said Bresha..

 

 EPILOUGE-

Newly minted Lieutenant Jake  Rezin. working with Lt. Sissy Van Buren and her Criminal Investigation Division  and Lt. Danny Ho of Robbery-Homicide put together a case against Shai Youn..

ADA Keith Wallace successfully prosecuted him...

He was charged with conspiracy in the murders of  Shang Hai and Mikel Bariskanova...

The actual killer of those two was the now deceased Wilbur Underhill..With Shai Youn's  henchman, Max arrested and charged with his Murder..

Both got life imprisonment.

This made Lieutenant Tragg look bad... His entire investigation had gone in the wrong direction. He was once again, the laughing stock of the department.

He lucked out in the fact that Eddie Lee did not sue the city as he threatened....Which saved Lt. Tragg from another trip to the Marine Boat..

Saturday Night , We were all guests at Eddie Lee's Tony Asian Cuisine Restaurant..

''Enjoy Everybody...All of my lawyers are here...This makes two times old Lt. Tragg has brought me up on phony murder charges and two times he's failed... Enjoy your meals.." he said.

"Thank You...That's right...Five years ago, Vettie defended you when you were brought up on Murder charges.."said Olivia.

 

"Yeah I remember that." I said, smiling.

"Well hopefully he'll leave you alone and end his vendetta." said Beverly.

"Hope Springs Eternal." said Nelson.

"Yeah How about that.." said Josie..

"Come on, get some of this good hot food, it's delicious." said Paris.

"It is delicious."said Bresha.

"I'm surprised we haven't been here before." said Tony...

"I know...We've got to come back..."said Alfreda.

"Next Time as paying customers." said Rockland as he made himself a plate of food.

 

"Five years ago, you and your team was defending me from a bogus Lt. Tragg investigation."said Eddie Lee.

 "That's right...we were... You stay out of trouble now...Don't tempt fate.."said Yvette.

"Lt. Tragg hates to hear that Olivia and Beverly or you guys are the lawyers in any of his cases...He almost always loses." laughed Yvette's husband, Gary..

"Because both groups do extensive research , which he doesn't do,and we have good investigators.." said Keith Jones.

"And we come with receipts..."said Bee Bee.

"That's why we 've always won...." said Sofia.

"He's always grabbing the wrong person..."laughed Kahlil..

"This is a great restaurant here Eddie, Great Food."said Jade.

"Yeah man, keep up the good work."said Danny.

"Thanks....I hear you were working with the detectives that brought my nephew and his main man Max to justice...Thanks..He was a pain in the ass....but he is my sister's son...what can I say...When I simmer down and stop being mad at him...I may go and visit him in Phoenixville, where he currently resides." said Eddie Lee.

"Family is still Family..."said Virginia.

"Yeah even when they get on your damn nerves.." said Jetty.

Alexa and  Danny were with us tonight also.. 

"This is sooooooo nice...and this food is delish...You got any more stacked clients?" Alexa joked.

"I'm pretty sure I do.... Say..I talked to that Landlady you told me about.. She has a room on the second floor.. Room 202...I'm moving in next week." said Daniel..

"Ouuuu that's great...you're in the room right below mine...Ouuuuu we are going to have so much fun." laughed Alexa...

"Eric lives two doors down from me on the second floor." said Toni Robinson, who was also with us..

"Welcome to the building homie..." said Eric.

"This food is delish..." said Jazzy..
 

"We have been eatin good the past few weeks..."said Dabnis.

"Yesss...Stephon Bristols' seaside restaurant, The Food at the rooftop party and now this." said Kayla.

"And to think , he rented this whole section out just for us..."said Ray...

"At no charge.."said Jessica.

"That's what I like." said Chip..

"This food is delicious.." said Karen...

"I'm going to find a way to do a story on this on my show.." said her husband, B.L.

"Ummmmm another adventure in cuisine for us...We are going to sleep good tonight."said Natalie.

"Olivia is sooo good to us...She always shares the wealth." said David.

"She really does doesn't she?" said Brooke.

"Yeah we should all chip in and do something for her one of these days.."said Sean.

"I think all of us living around her and doing things with her and Bev is her real payback...They were pretty lonely up here until we all moved into the neighborhood."said Zoey...

"Yeah One by one...We filled up the neighborhood and it's new houses.." said Lem.

"We are all cool people to work and hang out with."said Renee.

"That we are.."said Tyrell.

"This food is delicious.." said Lee..

"Glad it meets your approval.." said Eddie Lee smiling..

"It is good food and it's great weather again tonight." said Matthew..

"Watch next Saturday , it rains.." said Nina.

Eddie Lee stood by the window of his restaurant.. He had had one of his men box and prepare a gift for Lt. Tragg... ''A Token of his appreciation" you might say...He was smiling at the thought of him receiving it.

Lt. Tragg had just taken a shower and got dressed...He had packed an overnite bag... He was going over to Kelly Ann's place and possibly stay the entire week..

and at Lt. Tragg's house... He finds a gift wrapped box at his doorstep.

Sitting there, addressed to him...with no return address.

He was having a feeling of Deja Vu.."Hmmmmm this smells nice...Like that perfume I bought Kelly Ann last week....."Hmmm wonder what's inside..?" he mused..

He opened it only to see a dead crow!!!

"ARGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!" he screamed...

His entire neighborhood heard him screaming...
