SAM MOTHER'S DINER-

Renee Cantrell-Jones had a court appointment within the next hour and she stopped in Sam Mother's Diner to have breakfast..An Omelette, Hash browns and Sausages..

As usual Sam Mother's food was good  and comforting.

 

Renee was enjoying her breakfast, but sorry she had chosen Sam Mother's Diner to eat in this morning.Bruce Greene had come in and he had invited himself to her table and ordered his meal..

''Good Morning Renee, Nice seeing you here." he said as he ordered two Fried eggs over easy, Hash browns and sauasages,

Bruce was ecstatic...The Feds had not been able to find any wrong doing on his part in wife's death and now those troubling questions had subsided a bit... He had received an uptake in the polling...Not enough though...Gil Garcetti still had a double digits lead over him...but he had hopes his numbers would increase..

He talked more about his plan to add more Assistant District Attorneys to specific areas of crime and to dismantle the Wrongful Conviction /Conviction Integrity unit...and to make other changes to the office, such as having each ADA evaluated on merit...Having their raises depend on amount of convictions..as well as other changes..

He ignored questions about morale and the fact that many ADA's went on record saying that if he was elected District Attorney, they were resigning.

He blabbed on and on about this to Renee, who said nothing...She couldn't get a word in, so she just ate her breakfast..

He rambled on the entire time and then asked Renee-

"How is married life treating you?  Everything Good???, because if it's not...I'm here you know." he said.

"My Husband is wonderful...My Marriage is Great!" she replied....

"Oh" he responded...a little disappointed...

Renee finished her food,paid her bill,left a tip and got up from the table..

"See you around Bruce...I got a court date.." she said and smiled.

He watched her as she left the diner...So round, so curvaceous...He wished things had been different and that he could have had her...

He had a court appointment to be at today too and a Press Conference.

II-

The Four of us drove to the courthouse in Brooke's car...With Brooke Driving, Sean riding shotgun and Natalie and I in the backseat..

''We should get there in good time."said Brooke.

"Yeah...in time to grab a couple of tumblers of coffees." said Sean...

Natalie and I were kissing in the backseat like two lovesick teenagers...

"Do you two need a moment?" laughed Brooke ,eying us from the rearview mirror...

"No...We've uh had our moment."said Natalie, non-chalantly easing out of  my embrace...

She took a disinfectant wipe and wiped her lipstick smudges off of my face and lapel...

Sean just laughed....

Boss Lady drove up with Olivia and Beverly and crew in their 2023 Lincoln Navigator.

With Donnie Ray driving, Olivia and her sitting up front...and Beverly, Nelson, Josie and Bree sitting in the back..

''We should get there in good time."said  Olivia.

"Yeah...in time to grab a couple of tumblers of coffees." said Karen.

''As many trials and hearings we've been to, I don't know why I'm so excited about this one." said Olivia.

"Me too Auntay.....I feel exactly the same way." said Beverly....

"Maybe because we aren't upstate...Maybe because we are home.."said Nelson.

''And we have a Judge, We think we can like."said Josie.

"All of this is new to me...but I'm equally excited."said Bresha.

Our Appellate Court Building looked Imposing....

There was a food truck outside... We bought coffees...

''Mmmmmm this is surprisingly good coffee...I don't always expect real good coffee off of a truck." said Olivia.

"I knowwww right?" said Karen...

"This is good strong coffee...We'll be alert when we enter the courtroom."said Beverly.

"You shouldn't be nervous...She's your soror."said Nelson, smiling at Beverly.

"Let's hope for the best and not get to ahead of ourselves."said Josie.

Bresha quietly thought the same thing, knowing that nothing is in the bag...

Natalie was eerily quiet, saying nothing....she was a veteren of these hearings...She knew things could go sideways quickly...

I put my arms around her and held her tight...

"Let's hope for the best and not get to ahead of ourselves."said Brooke, echoing Josie.

"We are going to be alright....There is the bus from the prison holding Calvin..."said Sean.

The bus pulled up and several sherrif's deputies escorted Calvin off the bus in shackles and handcuffs..

He smiled weakly....This was the closest he had come to any real hope since 2020 when he was locked up originally.

To our shock and surprise...Bruce Greene was also here...No one expected him and no one knew what interest he had in the case.

Judge Telma Bailey was equally surprised to see him.

"What are you doing here?" she asked, not hiding her disdain for the man.

"Well My Dear Sister in law....I came to see justice or rather injustice in action heh heh heh..."he laughed.

"I'm not your sister in law you rat...." said Judge Telma Bailey.

"Well...That's one good thing about her..She feels the same way we do about him."said Beverly...

Natalie nodded and laughed.

III-

APPELLATE COURT-SOUTHEASTERN PENNSYLVANIA DISTRICT

Judge Telma Bailey's courtroom....

Karen And Olivia were the lead attorneys...They argued eloquently that this case was mishandled by the prosecution from day one... They allowed two detectives to brow beat bully and bribe witnesses ,all who had criminal records and were afraid of going back to jail into testifying against him in trial...

With Beverly being second chair...She argued that his co-defendent...Joseph Jenkins, a three time loser and a co-worker of his recently recanted his testimony....He is dying of Cancer and was not able to come to this hearing, but Beverly presented his signed Affadavit and produced a video on a 75 inch TV screen of him recanting his testimony and naming the two detectives on the case as the two that offered him immunity if he would testify against Calvin Johnson.

Calvin Johnson was nervous...He naturally didn't have a lot of faith in the justice system...He nervously held Beverly's hand...He was afraid...

Nelson knew that and he didn't mind.

Nelson presented the other witnesses, along with their signed Affadavits who also recanted their original testimony saying that they were bullied into testifying and saying they were threatened with being returned to prison if hey didn't. These "witnesses" all had records or perjuring themselves in other cases for favors...he noted.

Brooke and Natalie presented DNA Evidence gathered from the FBI, The Philadelphia Medical Examiner's Office and an Independent DNA lab that proved...Blood and Semen found in the victim belonged to someone else and not Calvin Johnson.

Then it was Sean and My turn..We brought in Three Dentists, All specialist who specialized in Bite marks...We showed photos of the bite marks on the victim ,who was bitten during a sexual assault and then showed photos and xrays of Calvin Johnson's teeth....The Bite marks did not match.

Josie concluded that there was not adequate empirical data on bite mark analysis, the analyst’s original assertion that the bite mark was consistent with Johnson’s co-defendant was inherently prejudicial and lacked probative value.  

Bresha brought the original man to court who testified against both Johnson and Jenkins...Turned out he wasn't a licensed dentist.

This was all brought out in Donnie Ray's more than thorough investigation.

Judge Telma Bailey was impressed with our presentation and astounded with the prosecution and the detectives involved...

She tossed Calvin Johnson's conviction out....She didn't order a new trial...There was no need she said.

She ordered him released immediately...

She put out a warrant for the two detectives involved.... Both men were unfortunately deceased..One had been fired and the other had retired before he died....She asked to speak to the original prosecutor...Unfortunately...He too was now deceased...She just shook her head.

"The Old Boys Club" she said....

"This was a miscarriage of Justice..a gross miscarriage of justice, thank goodness these very talented lawyers  thought it not robbery to take up his case for less money than they are usually paid to see that justice was done."said Judge Telma Bailey.

Olivia and Beverly leaped into the air as they did after each victory..

"WHOOOOOOOOOOOO WEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!" they screamed as they high fived each other..

"THANK YOU ALL, THANK YOU SOOOOO MUCH!" said a Jubilant Calvin Johnson...Happy to be free after five long years in prison..

"You can ride back with us man."said Donnie Ray.

"Awww thanks man. and thank all of you guys,"said Calvin Johnson.

"You're quite welcome..."said Karen, satisfied with her department's 302nd win...

"You're welcome Calvin..."said Brooke...

"You're so welcome..."said Natalie..

"Be easy man!"I said.

"Yeah Be Easy and you're quite welcome."said Sean Marks.

Bruce Greene was addressing the press...

"This is exactly what I mean...This man was tried and found guilty by a jury of his peers five years ago and these attorneys...Four of them from my own District Attorneys office...dug up this case, re-opened it and got this man released from prison...You had Olivia Bennett-Alexander, her neice Beverly and her crew taking on this case...with a U.S. Public Defender and four attorneys from my office...This is non-sense and the city paid for it...When I am District Attorney I will dismantle the Wrongful Conviction/Conviction Integrity Unit..There is no need for it...You Have the Innocence Project and independent attorneys to take on these hard luck stories ." he said to the press..

Several reporters brought up the fact that we proved this man was innocent and that the Judge even said this was a miscarriage of justice....but it was like talking to a brick wall...Bruce would hear none of it..

"I still say that there is no need for this unit...There are a lot of changes I plan to make when I am elected District Attorney." he said.

"OUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU I CAN'T STAND THAT MAN!" said The Judge...

"Neither can we your honor." I said and we both laughed.

IV-

TUESDAY NIGHT-

We all decided to have drinks and dinner at a Tony Rooftop Bar in town tonight... It was after Eight on Election Night and everybody had voted....

''Well we did what we could...We voted."said Jazzy.
 

"I just hope we had a large turn out...This is an important election."said Dabnis.

"For us lawyers...I don't know how the rest of the city feels about things."said Kayla.

"I wonder if Bruce Greene would get a large Black voter turn out because he's black, even though we know him to be a jerk."said Ray..

"I'm sure that comes off in his interviews...." said Jessica.

"Yeah Egotistical,Self Centered Jerk!" said Chip.

"Gil doesn't exactly come off as John F. Kennedy either...but he has been progressive, willing to admit that some prosecutions were faulty and willing to work to get truly innocent people out of jail..I hope that comes across."said Karen..

"If it doesn't...You guys will be back in the courtrooms with Center City Offices..."said B.L.

"I told you...If he wins , my resignation is on the table tomorrow morning."said Natalie.

"He's not going to win...His polling was still underwater as of this morning."I said.

"Polls have been wrong and polls aren't votes."said Brooke.

Sean was quiet....He shuddered at the thought of not being able to see his wife everyday....He knew that like Natalie...If Bruce Greene won she was quitting...

"I'm so glad that whether he wins or loses it doesn't affect me.."said Zoey....

"Same here...but I fear for Natalie, David and Brooke."said Lem.

"I saw him this morning again in Sam Mothers, bragging about changes he had in store.."said Renee.

"I want him to lose so bad.....I want to see the egg on his face."said Tyrell.

"You guys are so sure he's going to lose... I hope you're right."said Lee Phillips..

"I was talking to my colleagues at work today...None of them like him.." said Matthew.

 

''Let's hope enough of them don't like him enough to not vote for him."said Olivia.

 

"I was looking at his polling numbers this morning in the paper...They were abysmal." said Donnie Ray.

"Polls have been wrong before...They don't poll everybody."cautioned Beverly...

"True....but they are at least close....This guy aint even close.."said Nelson.

"I noticed Gil hasn't mentioned him at all or said one negative thing about him during his campaign."said Josie.

"Because he has such a gigantic lead he hasn't had to....."laughed Paris.

"On the other hand...Bruce has criticized Gil's leadership from the top down, calling him by name."said Bresha.

"I wonder if he loses will he quit the D.A.'s office....I mean how could he go on working there after the things he's said about his boss?" asked Tony...

"Yeah I imagine things would get frosty and weird."said Alfreda.

"It sure would....Gil might punish him with a smaller office."laughed Rockland... 

Nina laughed loudly....then said.. "I've never known Gil to be a petty or vengeful man, but if he did do that..I can't say that I woud blame him." she said. 

"Wow that would be something..."laughed Carlos...

 

 

Yvette looked at her tablet.....

"Ouuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu 65 percent of the precents are in and Gil Garcetti is leading 90 percent to Bruce's 10 percent......WOWWWW~!

"He's really going to have to have a surge to catch up."said Gary.

"He's going to need a miracle."said Keith Jones.

"He's wanted this for a long time...This is all he's talked about...and he's getting slaughtered."said Bee Bee.

"I almost feel sorry for him...What will he bore the girls with now?" asked Sofia.

"He'll whine about how his campaign was sabotaged by all that talk about him having his wife killed."said Kahlil.

"I think his campaign was sabotaged the moment he got involved..."said Jade.

Her husband Danny laughed...

"Now when he goes on a date....He's going to have to listen to what the other person is saying."laughed Virginia.

"That'll be something new for him."laughed Jetty.

Deputy District Attorney Lester Burke walked in with his date, our friend, Natika Sommers...They saw all of us and walked over to where they were sitting..

"Well Hello folks...Seems like we all had the same idea tonight...Some hot food and cool drinks huh?" he said.

"Hiiii everybody.."said Natika.

We all spoke..

Lester walked over to us....

"Karen..you and Natalie and Brooke and David have been doing a fantastic job...and Both Gil and I are pleased... When this over...We plan to get you guys more money and more resources..."he said.

"OUUUUUUUUUUU THAT SOUNDS GOOD!" said Karen..

"YESSSSSSSSSSSSS!" said Natalie..

"I love it! Thank You.."said Brooke.

"Now let's hope you guys win..."I said.

We didn't have to wait long...Within thirty minutes...the race was called... With 90 percent of the precincts in Gil Garcetti won by 97 percent to Bruce Greene's 3 percent....The largest margin of victory in the City's history...

At his empty Campaign Office...Bruce Greene was inconsolable..

He couldn't believe he'd lost as badly as he did... He couldn't believe that Monday of next week

he'd be back in his old office under the control of Lester Burke, who he had planned to fire..

He couldn't take the thought of all the snickering behind his back of his co-workers, who he knew hated him!....

He ran to an open window and leaped out........

Unfortunately, he wasn't up that high and he crashed upon a parked car......He received only a concussion...and a sprained ankle.

He was driven to the hospital...

Miles away and hearing about it on the news, Judge Telma Bailey laughed loud and hardy....

It wasn't the total revenge she wanted...but she'd take it!
