Cut and Dry

We had just won a major litigation today downtown...and we were relaxing in a nearby coffee shop.. One Jazzy and Kayla had told us about...
 

They had Jenga blocks on the tables and Kahlil and I were involved in a spirited game while we waited on our coffees..

"I got you homeslice...You're goin down with the next block." said Kahlil.

"Don't count on that...I've been playin this game for years...Goes back to when I was at Howard,,,There..take that." I said.

"Look at them both...like two little boys." said my wife, Bee Bee, smiling..

"Two cute little boys."laughed Sofia.

"It looks like fun...I've got winners."laughed Jade.

"Olivia, Karen and I used to play Jenga..I think Liv has a set at her house."laughed Yvette...She looked around...

She really liked this place...

A familliar face walked in, saw them and walked over to where they all were seated..Former intern, newly minted attorney, Lee Phillips.

"Heyyyyyyyy Ms. Yvette, Ms. Jade, Bee Bee, Sofia, Kahlil, Keith how are you guys doing.. I had a big litigation a few blocks away from here...and with it being over...I decided to come and have a cup of the legendary coffee I hear this place makes." she said.

"You win?" I asked jokingly..

"Did I? I won 2.5 million dollars in damages for my client...She went in the hospital for minor back surgery and the doctor accidentally split one of her kidneys in half...He had to remove it...."said Lee.

"Oh My God!!!!!  I'm glad you did win for her."said Ms. Yvette,

"Did they fire that butcher that did the operation?" asked Sofia.

"Nah ,I doubt it!  Hospitals handle suits like this all the time...They usually just settle..."said Kahlil.

"Kahlil is right." said Ms. Yvette., "Hospitals get sued for more serious things than this..They settle to avoid the bad publicity." she said.

"And that's what happened."said Lee.

"Grab a seat...there is plenty of room."said Bee Bee.

"Here come our coffees." I said.

Our coffees arrived and we all settled down and enjoyed them....

and the rest of our victorious afternoon..

THE NEXT MORNING

BREAKFAST-

"So Vettie, Did you guys check out the coffee shop I told you about downtown after your litigation?" asked Jazzy..

 

 "Oh my God Jazzy...Good Looking out...The coffee was soooo good..Thank you for the reference...I've gotta tell Liv when I see her." said Yvette.

"I've heard of that place..but it was my first time there..Great coffee." said Lee.

 I won 2.5 million dollars in damages for my client...It was pretty cut and dry....No pun intended. She went in the hospital for minor back surgery and the doctor accidentally split one of her kidneys in half...He had to remove it...."said Lee.

"OUCH!" said Jazzy's husband, Dabnis.

"I know right? The Hospital settled." I said.

"That is something...you go in for minor back surgery and lose your kidney...Wowwwww!"laughed Bee Bee.

"Makes me scared to go to the hospital, for anything." said Sofia..

''Well, it wasn't soo bad, she left a millionaire."said Kahlil.

"Money isn't everything."said Jade.

"Aint that the truth."said Virginia.

"Well alls well the ends well...I've been to that coffee joint before..Any of you guys play Jenga?" asked Jetty..

"Me and Keith played."said Kahlil.

"Then Lee came and she played too!  She's pretty good." I said.

Lee laughed.

"She even got me and Sofia to play." said Bee Bee, smiling.

"It was fun...Coffee and Jenga."said Sofia.

Just then former Assistant District Attorney and now Staff Attorney at Women's Law Center, Nina Rios walked in...Though they worked down the street..We got them building passes so they could eat with us., Much like we did for Sean...

"There is my 2 million dollar baby.....So proud of her...When that poor woman came to Women's Law Center and told us what happened...I started to take the case, then I said Nah...I'm going to give it to Lee and see how she handles it."said Nina,hugging Lee.

Lee was blushing, getting all of this attention.

"She knocked it out of the park."said her boyfriend, Attorney Carlos Diaz, who also was a staff attorney at Women's Law Center.

"Well I'm glad everybody was successful yesterday."said Jazzy.
 

"Yeah , I think the next time I'm in town I'm going to visit that coffee shop."said Dabnis.

"It's a really cool place..Kinda Bohemian." said Kayla.

"Like the No I.D. Bar." said Ray...

"Yeah like that...I've been in that coffee shop before. It is nice." said Jessica.

"Yeah..we both were in there right after we left the Public Defenders Office." said her husband, Chip.

"Give me the address of this place...I'm going to treat my team to it..It's not that far from the Courthouse is it?" asked Karen.

"It's a few blocks over...This guy took me there once when I was a Public Defender."said Natalie.

"It should have been me."said David.,

"It should have been...butttt you're that guy in her life now..You can take her."said Brooke..

"I'm anxious to go now...I love playing Jenga."said Sean.

''What a day huh boo?" asked Zoey to her husband, Lem..

"Yeah, what a day."laughed Lem.

"Bruce Greene took me to that coffee shop once."said Renee.

"Did he make you pay for the coffee?" asked her husband, Tyrell..

Paris and Tony cracked up laughing...

"No silly...but I wouldn't have been surprised if he had of tried."laughed Renee....

Out of the corner of her eye, Yvette saw someone she hadn't seen in a long time...She couldn't believe it!

"Brenda? Brenda is that you?" she asked.

"Hi Vettie..." said Brenda.

"Well I'll be damned....Brenda Cherry....Oh My God!!! I haven't seen or heard from you in over a year.

How you been? How you been doin?" asked Ms. Yvette.

Brenda Cherry was a childhood friend of Ms. Yvette's who had moved to Houston ,Texas and then come back to Philly with her fiance...with a Gangster hot on their trail..

Her fiance was murdered and she was arrested and accused of murder and Interstate Flight to avoid Wire Fraud amongst other things..

We represented her in Federal Court and got her acquitted.of all charges...She settled down and got a job and until today...We never heard from her again...I was guessing Ms. Yvette never heard from her either.

"Vettie I'm sorry you haven't heard from me...but we have to talk......I am presently renting a small house out near the airport and until four weeks ago, I was working as a Nurse and surgical assistant at the hospital...Pulling down some serious cash...And then I got fired!" said Brenda.

"FIRED? What happened?" asked Ms. Yvette.

"The Head Surgeon, Dr. Arthur Bauer was sexually harrassing me from day one...It started out innocently enough...Laughing, joking...him asking me out for drinks after work and what not...but then it began to get serious...Touching inappropriately, feeling on me.....Him running his hands up my skirt...tugging on the waistband of my panties...trying to kiss me...I asked him to stop...I told him I wasn't interested in that type of relationship...He wouldn't stop....I lodged a complaint against him in HR... He stopped then, but his tone towards me grew hostile...

He gave me bad performance evaluations every quarter...and when we were in the ER and I was assisting him in surgery...His tone towards me was so hostile it bordered on being disrespectful....A Month ago...He was operating on this woman...Susan Hyland. It was minor back surgery....He was particularly disrespectful to me in his tone....He kicked me out of the operating room...Well within minutes...he accidentally split one of this woman's kidneys in half...He had to remove it!

He explained to her that he could reccomend a good doctor who would help her recover and that people lived long productive lives with just one kidney...She didn't want to hear it....and I don't blame her..

She went to the Women's Law Center and got her a lawyer and they took the hospital to court...

In the meanwhile...He said that I distracted him and that I was the reason for the slip up!  He fired me and worse than that...He black balled me.....I haven't been able to get a job anywhere...  I'm living off unemployment." explained Brenda.

"You want me to go after this Dr. Bauer or the Hospital right?" asked Ms. Yvette.

"Normally I'd say yes..but Vettie I can't afford your services right now....I need a job?  Do you need any filing done??....any kind of administrative work?? I did that in Houston to support myself while I was in Nursing School." said Brenda.

"I didn't know you were in Nursing School Bren...I guess that explains your job at the Hospital. I have an office manager....but I'll ask my friends over there..You know them all....or most of them."said Yvette..;."They're all attorneys...maybe one of them can hire you." she said.

Brenda scanned the crowd...She knew practically everybody...She had partied with us all before.

Of course she knew all of us...

 She knew Jazzy and most of the others  as well.

 

She didn't know Nina or Carlos....

And she stopped at Lee Phillips.

She did a double take...

HER!!!!  That's the lawyer...That's the lawyer that Susan Hyland got to represent her...She won that 2.5 million dollar judgement.!!!!WOWWWWW!  You know her?" asked Brenda.

"Sure Do...Her name is Lee Phillips and she works down the street at Women's Law Center...She interned with everybody in here...Her last month in law school...We helped her study for the bar..She's fierce isn't she?" gushed Yvette.

"WOW!  She studied under you???....No wonder she was so good...She really socked it to my former employers..."laughed Brenda.

"Look Bren...I'll make a few inquiries and I'll give you a call okay? Soon." said Ms. Yvette.

The Body of Dr. Arthur Bauer was put in a white body bag, strapped to a gurney and wheeled out of the hospital..

"And Lt. Tragg is nowhere to be found in here tonight...even if that wasn't the case." said Jessica.

"He's more than likely holed up with Kelly Anne."laughed Chip.

" Actually, Kelly Ann is out of town...She had a death in the family in Alabama..She's been gone a few days now." said Karen.

"That explains his absence. He doesn't bother us anymore...Even when we do see him."said her husband, B.L.

"Well he's not here tonight and that's a good thing either or."said Renee.

"Yeah,let's drink to him not being here." said Tyrell.

"Ms. Nina, I can't thank you again for giving me a job.." said Brenda.

"Not a problem...I owed Vettie a favor anyway."said Nina.

''We always need administrative help at the Women's law Center."said Carlos.

Brenda thought Carlos was sexy, but realized that was Nina's man..She thought Matthew was fine too and surprised to see that he was the significant other of the lawyer, Lee Phillips, who had won the 2.5 million dollar judgement against her former employers....She was secretly happy that the hospital had got it socked to them....That judgement had probably knocked Dr. Bauer's reputation down a notch, she thought.  She had no idea that he was dead and his unclaimed body was at the city morgue.

"Getting off at Noon would be nice."sighed Virginia.

Her husband Jetty laughed.. "How bout you Liv? You cutting your guys off at Noon tomorrow?" he asked. 

"I could, we don't have much going on this week." said Olivia.

 

"Knock on Wood." said her husband, Donnie Ray.

Her niece ,Beverly and Beverly's husband both knocked their knuckles on the table...and laughed.

"If we got off at Noon...I could go shoe shopping."said Josie.

"Whether we get off early or not..Tomorrow is Friday.." said her husband, Paris.

"Yeah...a real good day...It's the end of the week."said Bresha.

"Yeah, you can't beat that." said her husband, Tony....

"I think this fourth round is my last round...I'm kind of tipsy."said Alfreda..leaning into her husband, Rockland's shoulders..

"Me too!" he ;laughed. Glad he didn't have to drive like in the olden days...He left here tipsy or more many nights...He was just lucky he didn't get a DUI...

 

2:00 am....The Buses arrived to pick us up.

 

Brenda waved to each of us as we piled on the buses... She envied all of us..Coupled up...while she had no one...she would be driving in the opposite direction alone.

''Send me a text, letting me know you got home alright."said Yvette.

"KNOCK IT OFF!  Brenda Carey, you're under arrest for the murder of Dr. Arthur Bauer...You have the right to remain silent..Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law..You have the right to an attorney...If you do not have one..One will be supplied to you...You DO UNDERSTAND these rights as I am reading them to you, don't you?" asked Lt. Tragg.

Brenda stared at him balefully...

"TAKE HER AWAY BOYS!" said Lt. Tragg.

She was put in a police car and whisked away into the Philadelphia Night.
