VENTURES: Converging Histories

Ms. Yvette sat on the side of her bed the next morning.. Not sure if she'd dreamed about her last call or if it had really occurred...

She sighed.. She knew the week before when Deke just happened to drop by her office, asking for the usage of one of her attorneys...that he was going to be trouble..That he was not just going to go away..

Gary was out of the shower now..

Deke Richards didn't flinch...He sat there still smiling as Yvette and the rest of us walked in..

''We found you a Judge and you'll be arraigned in about three hours.." said Bee Bee.

"We brought you a little nourishment..We figured you might be hungry.." said Sofia..

Jade opened a thermos

A Thermos filled with hot coffee...

and laid out doughnuts ,hot from the oven

and Bagels and cream cheese..

"Oh Bless you...Bless you...These are from Cakeman Raven's shop aren't they?" asked Deke.as he devoured the spread..

"Yes sirrrrrrrrr!" said a smiling Kahlil....watching him devour the food and coffee..

"I love his bakery, everything so fresh, so hot right out the oven." said Deke..

"Yesssssssss!" agreed Bee Bee as she munched on one of the doughnuts...

"A woman has been murdered here!! A woman's been murdered and you guys are talking about doughnuts and damn bagels??? You're defending this piece of human excretement Vettie,.,Shame on you!" said an angry Lt. Tragg as he stormed out of the room..."SHAME ON YOU!" he bellowed and slammed the door.

"That guy needs a laxative.." said Deke..

Yvette, Jade, Myself, Kahlil, Bee Bee and Sofia all broke out in gales of laughter..

THREE HOURS LATER-

We all appeared in court with our client..

for his arraignment hearing..

The Judge was Margaret Robinson... We had tried a case in her court before..She had been very fair to us...

She looked at our client and a wry smile crossed her lips..

SIX MONTHS AGO-

They were in a car, parked in back of her apartment complex....They had just finished dining at a very tony restaurant...

Bee Bee and Sofia present predicates, old cases and laws to back up why their client should be given reasonable bail..

Kahlil and I presented 22 attorneys, 10 investigators , 2 Judges and one ADA as charactor witnesses, people Deke had known for over 20 years...

Janice showed photos of the dead woman ,floating in the bathtub...her head bloodied by a steel beam..

"This is a serious matter..A Heinious crime." she argued forcefully...

Yvette argued that we were not arguing the particulars of the case, only that our client deserved fair bail..reasonable Bail...

Judge Robinson once again sided with us...She set bail at $2000.00 dollars..

Sofia passed a check for $200.00 to the bailiff, who smiled at her.. She smiled back..

Deke looked wounded...As if he had been betrayed..He looked at Janice and looked hurt..

Janice looked at him and turned away....

Lt. Tragg whispered in Deke's ear...

"You'd better watch yourself pal, because I'll be watching you..You can make book on it." he said to Deke.

Deke stared at him...He wanted to punch his face in...but he wisely refrained..

"Deke, go by your house and pack a bag...I want you to register in a hotel under your own name.." said Yvette.

I passed him a Portal..

"We'll communicate with you through this Portal...." I said.

Kahlil passed him a burner phone..

"This is a burner phone...All your communications with us and our office is to be done through that..It's untraceable..." he said..

"You guys really got it together." Deke Laughed.. "I uh thought I was gonna stay with you Vettie."He joked..

ADA Janice Hankins walked over to us...

"Olivia , thank you so much for allowing us to use your place for me and my crew to work remotely and to have our meeting.. Lt. Tragg is a pain in the keister..He was up at our office yesterday...two times trying to find out where our client, Deke is...And he knows we don't have to tell him that...We tried to eat a meal and he was in Sam Mother's at our table pontificating.."said Yvette..

''Vettie, you're my sister.. I'm always here for you...All you have to do is ask.." said Olivia, hugging her good friend..

"You don't have to tell us about Lt. Tragg...He pays us a visit here ever so often..Luckily this week , none of our cases involve him.." said Beverly...

"Well when he goes to Sam Mother's he's not gonna find us today." I said.. We had eaten breakfast with Olivia, Beverly and company..

"Or our office either.. Something has got to be done about him.." said Bee Bee.

"I know..He's unhinged.." said Sofia..

"ADA April Taylor keeps him in line..She must be working a case this week..or else we wouldn't see him." said Kahlil..

"Alright girls say it!" said Olivia..

"I hadn't seen her in months..I don't know much about her private life except that she told me she worked at Gottliebs Insurance..downtown..Was an Office Manager." said Deke.

"Gottliebs eh? That's Big Time...She was making big bucks." I said.

"You said you represented her in her divorce...Maybe it was a still angry ex-husband."said Sofia..

"I wouldn't rule that out...He was pissed at the hearing...Called me a few choice names too!" said Deke.

"I want you to go back to your hotel...Keep a low profile..Until we call you....stay outta trouble if you can.."said Yvette..
