A Friend Who Sits High

 We were in Big Fed...The Federal Courtroom downtown...A courtroom we had been in for a few weeks and the end of  hotly contested trial..

Judge Amy Barrett asked the Jury foreman the familliar question...

"Mr. Foreman, has the jury reached a verdict?" 

The Jury Foreman looked at the judge and shrugged...

"Your Honor...We are Hopelessly deadlocked...7 to acquit and 5 to convict." he said..

Judge Barrett sighed.. "Alright.. then I am once again declaring a mistrial..We will keep you posted as to when a new trial will begin.." she said..

She gave U.S. Attorney Todd Dellums, who we found ourselves up against..a baleful stare....THis was three deadlocked trials against him...The First one , the jury was split 6-6...the second one, the jury was split 6 to acquit, 5 to convict and 1 undecided... The third one, our most recent case was 7 to acquit and 5 to convict... In the Corruption trial of State Senator, Bonita Habib, An African-American Senator , who felt as though she was being targeted because of her Muslim religion and her uncompromising advocacy against certain members of the State Legislature..

"Oh will this nightmare ever end? This is three trials, three trials that have gone nowhere." she said.

"I know... I've gone to U.S. Attorney Dellums, but he won't budge.." said Yvette.

"Todd can be a real butthead at times... Olivia and Beverly went through four trials against him too.

He just won't budge.." said Bee Bee.

"Bee why don't you wear a real sexy mini skirt, take him out for drinks...Smooth him over..." joked Sofia, looking at me and laughing...She knew how I felt about Todd Dellums, Bee Bee's ex-fiance., even now that tensions had cooled and we were semi -friendly with him...

"Not on her life , eh Keith?" she said.

''Definitely not! and besides...He'd never go for it..That's just the way he is..He wants to win ,more than anything." I said.

"And so do we...We must be doing something wrong.."said Kahlil..

"I'm going to go back over my notes, re-interview witnesses." said Jade.

"You guys are great...I have complete faith in you." said Bonita Habib.

''At least you're not in a jail cell...You go on home, Kiss your babies and get some rest...We are going to get you out of this. I promise." said Ms. Yvette...

"I thought this time for sure we had a win..." I said..

"It's always somebody we can't convince, somebody that seems to need to believe she did something wrong..I know a lot of it is prejudice." said Kahlil, who felt some of the jurors in each trial was biased against both him and Bonita..

"More than one person Kahlil...We gotta do a better job selecting jurors..Todd has been getting the type he wants..The type he knows may harbor feelings like that." said Bee Bee.

"Yeah, we need younger , more educated and more racially diverse jurors..The Jury pool isn't offering us that much..unfortunately.." said Sofia.

"Let's go upstairs , get some food and let's go home, relax and try to enjoy our weekend..This case won't be coming up again for a few weeks.." said Ms. Yvette..

U.S. Attorney Todd Dellums didn't like to lose...and he seldom did..He was a brilliant and tenacious prosecutor.. He didn't like deadlocked juries either...

He had faced off against Olivia, Beverly and their team months ago in a murder trial involving a U.S. Marshall that had deadlocked three times before he eventually lost to them...It had put a bad taste in his mouth that he was just getting over.. and now he was facing his ex-fiance..Beatrice Evans..

who he still wasn't completely over yet...and her husband..

the man who had replaced him in Bee Bee's heart and in her bed  in a contentious trial that he might have won had he been facing any other attorney or attorneys...

and her sexy supervisor, Yvette Jones-Lockwood, who he lusted after almost as much as he did Bee Bee.

Her annoying, but sexy best friend, Sofia , who he admitted that had he not met and fallen in love with Beatrice, he would have gladly of taken to bed..

and her husband, Kahlil...

He and the sexy Asian investigator, Jade Lee were the only ones in the group he didn't have any personal feelings toward...

Just like the case with Olivia, Beverly and Josie.. He had very badly wanted to win this case..and now having had three deadlocked verdicts...He was getting nervous about another loss.

We all took the elevator up to the stylish dining hall in the courtroom.. It was nice not eating at Sam Mother's diner and having to contend with Lt. Tragg... It was even nicer not having to deal with a case that concerned him..

We all had Cuban Sandwiches..

Onion Rings

and Cokes.

"It's A Thursday Night..I'm going Grocery Shopping.. " said Sofia.

"I am too! Comin over for dinner? Ms. Yvette, you and Gary are welcome and so are you Ms. Jade and Danny." said Bee Bee...

''Aww thank you....You're saving me and Gary a couple of pennies tonight...we were thinking either Sam Mother's diner or Curleys. I've got to start doing some grocery shopping myself.. because come Winter..We are going to be doing a lot of eating at home." said Ms Yvette.

'Thanks for the invite...You girls love to entertain.."laughed Ms. Jade.

''What a week and it's just Thursday."said Kahlil..

'I know right ?" I said..

Judge Amy Barrett walked up to our table...

"Mind if I take a seat?" she said..

I pulled an extra chair over.

''Hello Amy.." said Ms. Yvette in a way that let me know the two women knew each other more than just casually...

''Vettie how have you been? I've been seeing you on the news lately....My Spec has made quite a name for herself.. I need a favor...a small favor..but a favor never the less." said Judge Barrett.

As the Judge, she could only talk to us because the trial was over...

"Anything for you my most esteemed Dean and colleague.." said Ms. Yvette, almost laughing..

So that was it.. Judge Barrett was an AKA and had been the dean of Ms. Yvette's line in college..That's how they knew each other..

"This case won't be coming up again for another few weeks unless U.S. Attorney Todd Dellums decides that it's fruitless, which it is...He has next to nothing and drops it." said Judge Barrett.

"He won't do that....Take it from me...I know him....He's uncompromising..I used to be engaged to him."said Bee Bee.

"Um Hmmmmm  and this is your present Husband eh?" said the Judge, looking at me..

I smiled.. "Yes I am your honor."

"Welllll young lady..You have good tastes in men." said Judge Barrett.. "About this favor.. the daughter of a colleague of mine,

Chloe Baker, an administrative assistant for State Senator Ralph Fuller, who happens to be up for re-election is suing him for sexual harrassment..she was terminated recently and she is planning to sue..She needs legal representation that is not tied to Calista County , where she was working and currrently lives..That Train you guys take to work every morning, runs out there and back. It's an easy commute."said the Judge , who handed Ms. Yvette a photo of her and her address and the address of Senator Fuller's office.  You might want to talk to him...Perhaps this can be worked out without going to court." said the Judge.

''Can we look into it Monday?" asked Ms. Yvette..

"Oh Girl of course..It's Thursday and you guys just gutted out three straight deadlocked cases...I know you're exhausted...Of course..." said Judge Amy Barrett...  who smiled. "I may be on your case when it comes up a fourth time...You guys were on point, but it would be nice to have a friend who sits high.Know what I mean?" said Judge Barrett, who smiled, patted Yvette on the back and stood up..

"Nice chatting with you good people. Oh and this conversation never occurred." she said ,smiling and walking away.

Ms Yvette turned to us and said..

"You can always use a friend , a friend who sits high (A Judge) and so...as long as it's not unethical, a favor for an unethical favor is okay." she explained.

"She was your Dean, when you pledged Alpha Kappa Alpha wasn't she?" asked Bee Bee, smiling..

"You still had that look in your eyes ,like you were still an Ivy.."laughed Sofia..

Both Bee Bee and Sofia were members of Delta Sigma Theta...

"Yes, she was my dean...I was a Freshman and she was a Senior...She went on to Georgetown Law school and a distinguished law career before becoming a federal judge and I went on to PENN LAW and a somewhat distingushed law career, depending on who you ask."said Ms. Yvette.

"Don't be so humble Ms. Yvette, you are distinguished too!" said Sofia, hugging her..

"Yeah, you're our distinguished lawyer.." said Bee Bee, also hugging her.

''Who was you girl's Dean?" asked Ms. Yvette.

" I can tell you one thing, she's not a Federal Judge..." said Bee Bee.

"That's for sure.."laughed Sofia.

Me, Kahlil and Jade all busted out laughing...

III-

Sometime later in the afternoon ,We were finishing up in the supermarket..

"Ready to go ladies?" I asked..

"We are headed to the check out counter now." said Sofia.

''It's nice that Ms. Yvette gave us off tomorrow isn't it?" said Bee Bee..

"Yeah after this case, we need a break and here we are getting ready to jump into another case in the meanwhile."said Kahlil..

"Yeah but this is a simple sexual harrassment civil suit , nothing heavy."came the voice of Ms. Jade.

"Nothing is ever simple for us. You know that Jade." said Kahlil.

"Yes, this is true."said Jade, grinning..

"Come on, let's get home and start cooking." said  Bee Bee.

''Right behind you baby."said Jade.

I immediately pulled out my phone.

"I'll call Ms. Yvette right now."I said.

"Uhhhh it's been a long day...Let's not bother Ms. Yvette right now..We can talk to her tomorrow, Nothing she can do today.."said Sofia.

"Yeah let's get started,." said Kahlil..

We joined Sofia and Kahlil at their home for dinner..

The smell of steaks on the grill propogated the room....

A Huge Salad

And a Nice Port of Wine that Bee Bee and I supplied rounded out our meal..

"Sofia, Kahlil...Everything is just Delish..."said Bee Bee..

"Thank you Girlfriend...We should do this more often.."said Sofia..

"I know...Even though we are next door to each other...I miss us all being in the same building."said Bee Bee..

"Somebody is at the door.That's probably Ms. Yvette and Gary and Jessica and Chip" I said.

"Might be Danny too..He'd said he'd be late."said Jade.

"Well , we'll never know unless we answer the door." said Kahlil..

As it turned out...It was everybody else, Ms. Yvette, Gary, Jessica, Chip and Danny Ho....

With the gang all here, we enjoyed a delicious meal that night...

Neighbors and Friends, enjoying a meal and fellowship on a Thursday Night...

That Night after everyone had gone home and we were all in our homes alone..

"Wow, what a day today....This trial is going to be off the chain..I'm talking about the fourth trial." she said..

"Ms. Yvette is going to let Todders have it next go around.." I said, smiling..

"Yeah, she was going straight at his evidence in this trial, but it wasn't enough." said Bee Bee..

I motioned to Bee Bee to come over to me..

"Why don't you come over here and let me have it?" I asked her ,smiling raffishly..

"You'll win next time baby...You will Fourth time is the charm!" said always supportive Gary..laughing.

They kissed under the moonlight..

"Damn it..this is very annoying.. Habib could cause me a lot of bad publicity.... I pulled a lot of strings, I reached out..They put their best man, U.S. Attorney Todd Dellums on this.. He usually gets an easy conviction...and now this damn sexual harrassment case...Who are these guys?" asked Senator Fuller.

"They're from out of Philly sir...Look, here are their files." said Betty Bumstead, who placed the files on his desk.
