COURTROOM WAITING AREA!

"HOT COFFEE, COME GET IT!" said Debra Brown....It was rare that our client went out for coffee, but she insisted.. She was hyped about having her day in court...

"GET IT WHILE IT'S HOT!" said Bonnie Shay...

As they passed the tumblers of steaming hot coffees out...

"Thank youuuuuuu!" said Karen...

"Thank you guys,,,," said Natalie, who was sitting on my lap.

"Just what the doctor ordered." I said, smiling.

"Thank you! Just what we need to wake us up, get us ready for trial." said Brooke.

"Yes, thank you ladies...As David said, Just what the Doctor ordered..." said Sean.

Bruce Greene, the Assistant District Attorney who was going to try this case again stood across the room from us..

He too had a tumbler of coffee. He glared at us angrilly....He didn't want us to be bringing this case up again, A Case he had won a few months ago...A case he believed had been fairly settled.

It had been a week since he and Paula Johnson had broken up..

He had called her and sent flowers to her office -

and had gotten no response.. He had stopped by her house...

but there seemed to be no evidence that she was there...

He had stopped by the law library downtown...No sighting of her...It seemed she had dropped off the face of the Earth....

Between this trial and his break up with Paula, he was not pleasant to be around...

"Look over there...There is that son of a bitch prosecutor who tried to send me up." said Debra Brown, eyeing Bruce Greene.

"Now Now Debra...He was just doing his job at the time...Don't take it personal."said Karen...

"Karen's right...He was and is just doing his job, but he is a prick though, isn't he?" said Natalie...

And she and Debra enjoyed a long hearty laugh....

"He broke up with his girlfriend last week , so he's going to be extra prickly..."said Brooke.

"HE HAD A GIRLFRIEND? Wow...He's so persnickety....What Woman could bare him?" asked Debra, laughing at her own joke.

"He's had his pick of the litter of successful women...They just didn't work out!" I said with a wry smile.

"Don't look at me!!!...He asked me out....I never went out with him." said Natalie...

''What? Ouuuuuuuuuuuu I love yall...You guys are so down to earth....All of you..."said Debra ,laughing as we all finished our coffee.

"Ugh Ohhhh, Speaking of his recent ex...There she is...She's a friend of ours...She's also an Attorney, Her name is Paula Johnson and she's with somebody." said Sean.

She was in the company of a young, handsome man....She waved and spoke to everybody...

"Hi Karen, Brooke, Natalie, David and Sean..... Heyyyy Bonnie Girl, I haven't seen you in a minute..Let me introduce you to someone.. This is Public Defender, Keith Hodges...I'm second chair on his trial this week." she said. "Keith ,these are my good friends, Karen Page -Benz, Natalie and David Charles, Brooke and Sean Marks and Bonnie Shay... All seasoned attorneys...All working with Wrongful Conviction/Conviction Integrity Unit.. Maybe they'll come down to the Public Defenders Office and give a lecture soon." she said.

"Hello, pleased to meet you." he said.

"UMMMMPH, he's a cutie!" whispered Debra Brown....

Brooke and Natalie giggled....

"Well , our trial begins in a few minutes in Courtroom B."said Paula.

"You're next door to us ...We are in Courtroom C...Let's get going guys..." said Karen..

Bruce Greene angrilly stomped his foot and stormed ahead of us into the courtroom...

"Well! This is going to be an interesting day." said Sean with a wry smile.

"Yeahhhh buddy!" I said with a smile.

COURTROOM C-

"ALL RISE FOR THE HONORABLE JUDGE THELMA HARPER DOCKET 511 , COMMONWEALTH OF PENNSYLVANIA VS. DEBRA BROWN ON THE CHARGE OF ARSON! said the Bailiff...

"Be seated...Good Morning, Good Morning Attorneys and Prospective Jurors...I am Judge Thelma Harper...Welcome to my courtroom....Due to courtroom crowding of cases , we are going to bypass a preliminary hearing...We know that a crime, a heinous crime has been committed so we are going to go straight to trial.. We will have Jury selection today...So Tomorrow, we will begin with trial." said Judge Wong. "We will start today with introductions.." she said.

"ASSISTANT DISTRICT ATTORNEY BRUCE GREENE YOUR HONOR, AS YOU KNOW, I WAS A CANDIDATE FOR DISTRICT ATTORNEY LAST YEAR!" he said.

"Yes...I think we all know that Mr. Greene." said Judge Harper drolly....

"Karen Page-Benz-Lead Attorney for the Defense your honor." said Karen.

"Mrs. Brooke Marks, Attorney for the Defense Your Honor." said Brooke.

"Mrs. Natalie Charles, Attorney for the Defense, your honor." said Natalie.

"David Charles, Attorney for the Defense your honor." I said.

"Sean Marks, Attorney for the Defense your honor." said Sean...

Bonnie , though an attorney was acting as an observer and a witness...She sat quietly with our client, Debra Brown...She wouldn't be trying the case..

Debra sat quietly and calmly, glaring angrilly at Bruce Greene every now and then...

Judge Thelma Harper was our friend, Attorney Serendipity Harper's mother...She recognized us, but didn't really know us...She just knew we were her daughter's friends... An attractive woman who turned many heads, still she was not to be taken lightly...She was a very talented and knowledgeable Jurist.

"Alright we will have jury selection." she said.

Bruce Greene was on his feet and primed like a boxer...He expected to be doing battle with Natalie and Brooke...He was surprised to be doing battle with me and very happy... He had never gotten over my victory over in court , a while back and was always anxious for what he considered a "rematch" of sorts.

"I knew all of his little tricks and maneuvers.. I watched tapes of him in court, bullying less experienced attorneys and out witting some pretty good seasoned attorneys...I was ready for him... plus I had my wife Natalie and my friend, Brookie sitting behind me on laptops whispering questions to me and giving me back up information on each juror..

Despite Bruce's maneuvers... I handed him a 10-2 defeat....Getting 10 of the jurors I wanted...

He wasn't too happy about that... He kicked the table violently...... This was a far cry from the first trial when he dealt Orville Newly a 12-0 slam dunk....getting all of the jurors he wanted...Not So this time.

He sat down and pouted like a petulant child.

"Okayyyy, we have a jury....Trial will begin tomorrow promptly at 9:00 am.. Jurors and Attorneys , you are reminded to be on time and be ready for trial." said Judge Harper.

We all filed out of court and into Sam Mother's Diner, where we were joined by more friends of ours...

''Well Hello Karen, Natalie, Brooke , David and Sean...Your trial was today too." said Olivia.

"Yeah we are in day one of our Arson retrial...This is our client, Debra Brown...Debra this is.." said Karen.

"Oh I know who they are...Olivia Bennett-Alexander and her niece ,Beverly West and company..So glad to meet you." said Debra Brown.

"Olivia and I lived across the hall from each other in law school...We've been like sisters for years." said Karen.... "What brings you guys out today?" she asked.

"We are observing a trial being run by an enterprising young Attorney named Keith Hodges...He interned with us and he's trying a case today with one of our friends , Paula Johnson, acting as his second chair." said Olivia.

"He's a good kid, learns real fast..." said Olivia's husband, Donnie Ray..

"He got into law late...He started out as an Accountant.."said Beverly... " I think he has a lightweight crush on Paula." said Beverly.

"Paula should have a crush on him....He's a cutie!" laughed Natalie.. Beverly nodded in agreement.

"Speak of the Devil...Here they come now." said Nelson.

"Hi Everybody!" said Paula , who walked in with Keith Hodges...

"Hellloooo!" he said.

Josie moved over and made a space for the two of them to sit down and join the group.

"Hi Guys.." said Bresha..

"Liv, thank you sooo much for letting us use your law library and for letting me crash in your sub-basement apartment a few nights..." said Paula.

"Oh Baby think nothing of it.."said Olivia.

Bonnie looked at a menu..

"Hmmmm let's see, what looks good?" she said.

"Ouuuuuuuuu let's see if they have anything new on the lunch menu...." said Brooke..

"I know it's lunchtime...but I think I'll order Breakfast..."said Sean..

"We missed eating in our building because we had to be here so early...I'm with Sean." said Natalie...

"Oh and you did a great job in court today husband... I was proud (and very aroused)'' said Natalie, who wasn't kidding.

''[Why thank you dear.....I think I'm ordering Breakfast too!" I said.

"I've gotta feeling wifey is going to "reward" you handsomely when yall get home.." whispered Debra to me..

Bruce Greene walked in....He saw the 13 of us spread out among two long tables , eating our meals,laughing and talking...It was too much for him... He decided to dine elsewhere...He turned and walked out.

III-

COURTROOM C-

Assistant District Attorney Bruce Greene was an angry man and a frustrated man....but still a brilliant and there for dangerous adversary... He decided to take it all out on us in court..

Like I said...He was a brilliant attorney and like all brilliant attorneys, he knew how to tell a story ...and just like in the first trial, he took the jury on a journey of Debra Brown purchasing a property and losing her job after only a few months...She was laid off of her Federal Government job... Her boyfriend, Reggie Owens moved in with her...He had a decent paying job and he paid the morgtage on the house while she was busy going to job interviews...until the two of them had a falling out and he was moved out of her bedroom and on to the couch...

It was then that he halted payments on the morgtage... The House had electrical problems and he hired two electricians,...One he knew after a brief stint in prison...and another he knew from the neighborhood.

In February of 2025, the house burned to the ground... Reggie asked for some of the insurance money...but Debra Brown refused... Reggie then went to the police with a tape recording of Debra admitting to burning down the house....A Tape he played for the jury to hear..

Debra Brown was a vengeful woman he said, who burned down her own house because she could no longer pay the bills and had turned against the one man who was helping..

In one week, this was the case he laid out for the Jury......

It was our turn......Karen , Natalie and Brooke weaved a different tale..

Yes Debra Brown, who had worked for the Federal Government for six years, decided to buy a house...

She hadn't been in the house for six months before she was unexpectantly laid off...due to Dodge Cuts...

While she went to job interviews , her live in boyfriend, Reggie Owens, newly released from State Prison, with nowhere to live moved in with her...

What ADA Bruce Greene failed to mention was that Reggie Owens was a two time loser...He had served three years for possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute (He was a Drug Dealer ) and according to police records, he was suspected of still dealing.. He had no record of gainful employment...and he was physically abusive to Debra Brown. They had copies of police complaints lodged by Brown to the police department...

Of The two electricians, both acquaintences of Reggie Owens...One was an old prison friend who didn't have a license. He was deceased now...He had electrocuted himself in an unrelated incident.. (This brought laughter to the Jury)

The other Electrician had a license, but a spotty record filled with complaints of inferior work.

Bonnie Shay, An Insurance Investigator and an Attorney verified these facts....

Sean showed the jury the deed and sales receipts which all proved that Debra Brown was the sole owner of the property....and that Reggie Owens was staying there basically as a guest, but never a co-owner, never entitled to any insurance monies..

Lastly, I played the recording to the jury allegedly with Debra Brown's voice on it saying she burned the house down....

We had the jury hear Debra Brown actually speak and then we called in an FBI expert with a voice analyzer that proved to the jury that the voice on the recording was not Debra Brown's....

Reggie Owens squirmed in his seat.....Even though we had subpoenaed him....We found we didn't need his testimony....So he was never called.

With that we rested our case.......

Now it came down to who the jury believed...Us or Bruce...We have definitely given Debra a better defense than she had had in the first trial...

Bruce Greene's mind was far from this case, which he was convinced that despite our furious defense, which even he admitted was superior to Orville Newly's defense...He had still convinced this intelligent jury of Debra's guilt...

"Alright jurors....The decision is on you....Talk only amongst yourselves...We'll return to court tomorrow morning at 10:00 am... Court is adjourned." said Judge Harper..

He was instead , sitting by himself on his laptop as we all filed out....

He was looking up this new Attorney that Paula was working with.

Paula answered a knock on the side door.. She thought it was Olivia or Beverly.... She was surprised to see Keith Hodges... She was in her baby doll..

"Keith! What are you doing here?" she asked.

"I uhhh...I uhh wanted to see you...I uhh didn't know you were ready for bed...I'm uh sorry...I'll see you tomorrow.." he said.

"I think we got this." said Bonnie Shay.

"I sure hope so." said Debra...who had had nightmares the night before about actually going to prison.

Bruce Greene arrived a little late...He was usually impeccably dressed... Today, he had on the same suit and shirt he had on yesterday.. and he looked haggard, like he hadn't had much sleep.

Judge Harper just smirked..

"Be Seated..." she said. "Has the Jury come to a decision? " she asked.

"Yes your honor, we have." said the Jury Foreperson...

The Jury Foreperson passed the verdict to the Bailiff...She passed it to the Judge.

She read it and showed no emotion...

" Oh alright...Can I have the defendant and her attorneys please rise!" said the Judge.

Debra's hands shook...She thought about going to prison for real this time...

Karen held her hand tightly....

Natalie removed my hand from her butt and just held it tightly..

I felt comforted by her holding my hand...

Brooke held Sean's hand...

He stood stoically.

"Read it!"

"ON THE CHARGE OF ARSON- WE THE PEOPLE OF THE COMMONWEALTH OF PENNSYLVANIA FIND THE DEFENDANT, DEBRA BROWN, NOT GUILTY!"she said,.

"ON COUNT TWO CONSPIRACY TO COMMIT ARSON... WE THE PEOPLE OF THE COMMONWEALTH OF PENNSYLVANIA FIND THE DEFENDANT, DEBRA BROWN, NOT GUILTY!"she said,.

"OH MY GOD!!!! THANK YOU SOOOO MUCH!" Said an Ecstatic Debra Brown ,who hugged Karen and Bonnie.

" You are soooo welcome." said Karen...

"We are going to give you enough money to buy another house and have no Mortgage."said Bonnie.

"Oh Thank you, Thank you all." said a very happy Debra Brown....

"I'm so happy for you baby!" said Ms. Virginia , who was here today...

''Another win for us." laughed Natalie.

"Another win for us." I said, pulling Natalie to me..

We began to kiss slowly and softly...

"Congratulations Keith!" said Sofia.

"Congratulations Man!" said Kahlil.

"Congratulations!"said Jade.

"Great Job in there." said a happy Virginia..

"We are so happy for you and we hope to work with you again.."said Olivia.

"Yes...Good Job in there." said Donnie Ray.

"I hope you'll join us tonight." said Beverly.

"Yeah....I'm sure you've worked up a good appetite." said Nelson.

"Oh I know he has.." said Josie.

"Congratulations Keith!" said Bresha , who had graduated from Middleton School of Law, a Semester before him.

"Good Job!" said Alfreda.

"Thank You All Again..." said Keith Hodges...

"You're going to pack an overnite bag and stay with me at my house tonight..."said Paula..

With the trial over...There was no need to hide anymore..She was going home...She was taking her new man with her...

And Debra Brown was going home tonight too! She'd had her day in court and she had emerged free and victorious!

EPILOUGE-

Debra Brown was given enough money to completely buy a new house with no Morgtage....and she did...She also was rehired at her Government Job....

Her ex-boyfriend, Reggie Owens did not get a penny and is now living in a halfway house...

That night we all celebrated at our neighborhood Steak and Seafood Restaurant just a few blocks from where most of us lived..

"Olivia and Yvette organized this....Our meals are paid for.." said Paula , who hoped Bruce didn't show up.

"That's really nice....They and their people and you of course have taught me so much!" said Keith Hodges.. "Heyyyy Boss Lady!" he said..

"Heyyy you guys....Everybody else will be here soon." said Natika.

who was with her boyfriend, Deputy District Attorney, Lester Burke...

"You're doing great work Natika...Hello Olivia." said Lester.

"Hello Lester...Natika." said Olivia.
