VENTURES: February 2023

THREE DAYS LATER-

We were having lunch in our conference room with our friends from the WRONGFUL CONVICTION UNIT and THE INNOCENCE PROJECT , to our extreme surprise..Lt. Tragg had done no press conferences..The Body had not been identified yet and we had gotten involved in another case altogether...We had teamed up with the Innocence Project and Wrongful Conviction unit and gotten a young attractive teacher who was arrested and convicted of sexually abusing one of her students thrown out...The who thing had been a lie and her conviction of two months ago was completely thrown out...

We had gotten some Guava Punch and some cubans and grilled Italian Stuffed Sandwiches off of our favorite food truck ,outside of our building..

"Vettie thank you and your guys so much for assisting us on that case....I was surprised you all wrapped it up so fast....and thank you again for allowing us to use your office for the next two weeks while the city engineers construct real offices in our suite..."said ADA Karen Page of the Wrongful Conviction Unit...

"Not a problem...This case allowed me to work with my hubby for the past two days..." said Yvette, who was sitting on Gary's lap..

As an Investigator for the D.A.'s Office now , he was shared by Rockland Cambridge and Karen Page...He loved to come down here and work with Karen and her staff...It meant he got to work with his wife and her staff too ot at least see them...He smiled, but said nothing...He was enjoying Yvette's warmth and her great fragrance as well as some of the tastiest sandwiches he had ever eaten..The combonation was driving him insane.

"Gary, you and Jade did an excellent investigative job. That stupid Lieutenant who made the arrest...Kicking down her door with a tactical squad reminds me of another Lieutenant who shall not be named, who didn't investigate any of the allegations at all..."said Karen...

"Maybe they are cousins..."said Jade...

The room erupted in loud laughter.... It was so nice having our own suite in this building...We had a lot of freedom and we were away from the eyes of the larger firm and the partners.

Bee Bee smiled and rubbed David Charles's back...

''We are going to miss you next week...You'll be off and staying across the street from us at Olivia and Beverly's place." she said.

'Yeah, but it'll be different....I'll be by myself.." said David Charles.... It would be the week before he and Natalie would be getting married.. It was customary that the groom not see the Bride for one week before the wedding. Most of us guys hated it..

"Oh it's just one week silly...Then you can have me for a lifetime.." said Natalie, laughing and flattered that a guy liked her that much that he didn't want to be seperated from her for a week...

''Hey David...We all hate that custom, but we've all had to do it..."I said.

"Yeah man...we've all had to do it..It's kind of like a rite of passage...You'll be alright...We'll all stop by, play some cards, listen to some music.. Olivia and Beverly won't mind..they are very accomodating..and they'll feed you too!"said Kahlil..

Again, we all laughed.

''Believe it or not...I didn't like the weeklong seperation either."said Jessica Sanchez-Burrows..

"Hey Yvette, guys, I have some news for you....I don't know if you know...but the Medical Examiner's Office has made a Positive Identification of that body found floating in the river a few days ago.. It is Lenny Fischer...He was identified by dental records and DNA from family members... His death is listed as a Homicide.. Due to a gunshot wound to the head and the fact that his body was weighted down with cement overshoes and covered with tarp..."said Sean...

''Well, now we wait and see what happens next..."said Ms. Yvette.

"Let's see...The Lt. Tragg Press Conference.." I said.

"He's got a body now and a name.." said Kahlil..

"He'll jump to conclusions and arrest someone..."said Bee Bee.

"The wrong person as usual." said Sofia..

''Yeah that's about it.. but we are more than ready...We prepped all of the charactor witnesses and his alibi witnesses as well during this case we worked with you Karen..." said Yvette.

"You guys have been busy the past few days...I've noticed.."said Gary..

"All we need to do now is find a Judge." said Jade.

"And a Jury..."laughed Yvette.

The Apartment of Trevor and Candance Hamilton...

A world away in our building...We were all eating breakfast....

Our cafeteria had several monitors which showed the local news...We all saw Lt. Tragg's press conference while we ate..

''Did you hear that pack of lies Vettie?" said Dabnis.

"I sure did..."laughed Ms. Yvette.

"Better to see him on Television while we eat than for him to actually be in our presence."I said..

"You're not lying about that."said Bee Bee.

"The city doesn't want another lawsuit...So they muzzled him until a positive I.D. was made." said Jazzy.

''Exactly...Exactly." said Sofia.

"The Brass probably read him the riot act..."said Kahlil.

''It wouldn't be the first time." said Kayla.

"Talkin bout...Of course I knew it was him the minute the body was found, but I wanted to give the M.E.'s office the chance to make a Positive I.D..I didn't uh want to jump to conclusions....What a crock!! The Brass read him the riot act, told him to keep his mouth shut until he was sure."said Ray.,

"Yeah, but now we are sure that that was Lenny..."said Ms. Jade.

"WOWWW!" was all Tony could say.

"Looks like you guys may have a new case if he arrests your client.."said Jessica

"He did say an arrest was imminent."said Chip.

"Once again, he'll rush to judgement, jump to conclusions and arrest the wrong suspect."said Virginia.

''Soooo, what are you going to do Vettie/" asked Jetty.

'That all depends on who he arrests."said Yvette..

Karen Page, Natalie, David, Brooke and Sean all walked in and the conversation changed..

"Natalie, I'm going to miss you and David...but when you come back, you're going to have new offices, real offices...that you were accustomed to when you were at City Hall. You'll have your privacy..."laughed Karen..

''That means you won't be ab;e to stare at me all day long.."laughed Natalie to David..

"Yeah I've got to chill out with that."admitted David..

"That's Okay...I'll come in your office every now and then..." said Natalie, softly rubbing his hands..

"You two are a little too mushy..."laughed her best friend, Brooke.

''Ahhhhh leave em alone."laughed Sean, who even though he worked down the street, joined us for almost every meal now.

Later at the Medical Examiner's Office.

"It's not everyday that I get a visit from attorneys."said Dr. Hazel Baylor.

We stood in the morgue ,staring at the bodies lying on the tables...A gruesome sight that we had somehow got used to over the years...

"I was just curious about the body you guys fished out of the river, Lennyy Fischer...I know you said he was shot and then weighted down and dropped in the ocean, but I suppose you have no idea when he was murdered or how long he was in the river?" asked Yvette.

"You have a client Vettie? Lt. Tragg did say an arrest was imminent..To answer your question...Time of death is not an exact science...This is only a scientific guess but this body had been underwater for at least three weeks and we are theorizing that Mr. Fischer was shot and killed and dropped into the ocean on the day he disapeared...but like I say, it's not exact science."said Hazel.

"That's good enough to know... In answer to your question..We think we will have a client.. A Young man approached us and paid us a retainer a few days ago... He said that Lt. Tragg has brought him in for questioning for the past three weeks since Mr. Fischer vanished and be believes he's going to be charged with murder eventually...Especially now since a body has been discovered." said Yvette.

"He is such an asshole...Did you see him on the news this morning?" said Hazel.

''Sure Did...He said an arrest is imminent..which is why we came here..To begin laying the foundation for our defense." I said.

"Imminent Arrest notwithstanding."said Bee Bee with a smile...

"He is such as asshole....I truly wish he wasn't on the force anymore and that he was replaced with another Detective." said Hazel.

"You know...I feel the same way..." said Sofia...

''We handle a lot of cases...but I have to say, the ones that involve Lt. Tragg do tend to be the most dramatic...and interesting."said Kahlil..

''Speak for yourself...It also tends to be the ones where he is the most unhinged... You don't have him threatening to pull your license all the time." said Jade.

"He threatened to call the State Board on me a few days ago..."said Hazel as we all laughed.

The crowd at this club was jumping...This wasn't a gay club...but it was what you might call "Gay friendly..

The D.J. was really jamming tonight...

A fellow attorney and LGBTQ Activist, Rod Singelton was sharing a table with Effrom Burke tonight and his good friend and also fellow attorney Rita Jackson...

''Yeah Poor Lenny....A toast to Lenny." said Effrom..

"I know you two had just broken up...but I know you would have never harmed him... I couldn't believe the cops kept dragging you down there in the weeks he was missing... I heard they Positively Identified the body they found in the river as his... He was shot in the head..I hope he died quickly and painlessly..

He was weighted down and dropped in the middle of the river...so cruel..." said Rita Jackson.

"Let's raise our glasses to Lenny." said Rod..

''To Lenny" said Effrom...

They raised their glasses and toasted the memory of their fallen comrade...

"Hands up laughing boy...You're under arrest!" said Lt. Tragg , who led a full tactical squad into the club, causing the music to stop and Patrons to scatter.

''Effrom Burke. you are under arrest for the First Degree Murder of Lenny Fischer,. You have the right to remain silent...Any and everything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law...You have a right to an attorney...if you can not afford an attorney one will be provide to you....You being an attorney I'm sure you understand those rights don't you? Cuff him boys."said Lt. Tragg..

Effrom cooly allowed himself to be handcuffed... He turned to his friend..Rita....

"Rita...Call that number I gave you..."he said as he was led out....

"I will." said Rita...

The Press just happened to be there when Lt. Tragg walked out with Efform in handcuffed..

Lt. Tragg was playing the roll of the hard boiled Homicide Detective to the hilt with his expensive tailored suit...His equally expensive shoes...Every Hair in place and make up...He looked like he from central casting as he kept a grim exterior as he and the handcuffed Effrom Burke, did the perp walk...

Effrom knew the press weren't here by accident...He knew that glory hound Lt. Tragg tipped them off, probably anonymously and they were there for his arrest...He smirked cooly as he was placed in the police car...

HOURS EARLIER-

Yvette was home....

She took a hot shower, lotioned down

Gary made her her tea and then went and sat on the couch, watching TV..

He had said he was going to let her get some sleep tonight..and he was serious.

Tragg...He told me to call you at this number, to let you know." she said.. "Go back to sleep...I'm really sorry about this." she said.
